Describe how you would use the Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing
Opportunity in your classroom:
After learning about narrative writing, the students will go online to enter into a published
writing contest. The students will visit the Write Me a Story page on the kidscom website. The
students will be given a character, prop and place. With this information, the students will write a
narrative story addressing each required element. The students will work with a partner to
complete a peer-review before submitting the final product. After submission, students will be
entered into a contest for a chance for their writing to be published on the site. This element will
motivate the students to complete their best work in order for a potential reward. Throughout
the following week, students will be able to go online and vote on the stories they like best. The
stories with the most votes are showcased on the website the following week.
What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a
classroom? This lesson could take place in a computer lab where each student has access to a
computer. The students will be given the URL to complete the assignment
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of
them may not be addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high
LoTi Level.):
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often
beyond their school: Students post their work to a website where students and
teachers nationwide can view their product.
b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (collecting original data and or
producing original products as a result of engaging in the project): The students
are using their knowledge of narrative writing to create their own narrative on the
website using the prompts given.
c. Higher-order thinking: The students engage with an on the spot prompt that
makes them apply their Language Arts knowledge and create an original writing
piece.
d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their
product: By using this site, students enter in for a chance to have their writing
published on the site based on the number of votes each story has.
