ThevonMisesyieldcriterion[1]suggeststhattheyieldingofmaterialsbeginswhentheseconddeviatoricstressinvariant
reachesacriticalvalue.Forthisreason,itissometimescalledthe plasticityor flowtheory.Itispartofaplasticitytheorythat
appliesbesttoductilematerials,suchasmetals.Priortoyield,materialresponseisassumedtobeelastic.
InmaterialsscienceandengineeringthevonMisesyieldcriterioncanbealsoformulatedintermsofthevonMisesstressor
equivalenttensilestress, ,ascalarstressvaluethatcanbecomputedfromtheCauchystresstensor.Inthiscase,amaterialissaid
tostartyieldingwhenitsvonMisesstressreachesacriticalvalueknownastheyieldstrength, .ThevonMisesstressisusedto
predictyieldingofmaterialsunderanyloadingconditionfromresultsofsimpleuniaxialtensiletests.ThevonMisesstresssatisfies
thepropertythattwostressstateswithequaldistortionenergyhaveequalvonMisesstress.
BecausethevonMisesyieldcriterionisindependentofthefirststressinvariant, ,itisapplicablefortheanalysisofplastic
deformationforductilematerialssuchasmetals,astheonsetofyieldforthesematerialsdoesnotdependonthehydrostatic

AlthoughformulatedbyMaxwellin1865,itisgenerallyattributedtoRichardEdlervonMises(1913).[1][2]TytusMaksymilian
