Today, geographic technology data and analysis are
being applied to build a new understanding about
creating the foundation for a sustainable society
and economic growth. This understanding presents
solutions to challenges such as recognizing the legal
land rights of the poor, upgrading slums, making
agriculture sustainable, and managing water.

Dirt Poor: Seeking solutions to
poverty from the ground up
 This session highlights on-the-ground success stories from
the CGIAR and its partners on land-based improvements in
the well-being of the poor farm households as well as in
the quality of the natural resources on which future rural
livelihoods depend. A common feature of these successes is
the growing reliance on geo-referenced information and
location-specific analysis to improve the targeting, design,
implementation, and evaluation of appropriate
interventions. The presentations will showcase how
improved insights into the spatial and socioeconomic
contexts of land-related constraints and opportunities can
help create solutions to poverty.

e – Atlas Opportunities

1. Subject of discussion at past 3-4 meetings!

2. Many relevant layers assembled as part of SRF
3. Very high potential for publishing as a CSI “hallmark” product
4. Need for (minimum required) levels of conceptual, methodological
and cartographic rationalization and harmonization & METADATA
5. Also need for text for integration/value added
6. Opportunities for boxes/deep dives (Phase II?)
7. Several components: GIS data layers (and search/query/download
functionality… much more possible at cost), PDF Atlas format, Tables
for standard spatial aggregation units (AEZs. Farming Systems, Market
Access..) … targeting GIS analyst, technical, planning, priority setting,
education, advocacy audiences
8. Gloal (Developing world) and/or regional products
