FAMILY FOCUS
Emergency Preparedness is a Family Event!

Emergency preparedness should be a whole family effort! It is important

for adults and children to know about and practice for different types
of emergencies. Being prepared helps everyone stay calm (and safe)
because each person will know what to do if disaster strikes. It is much
easier to stay calm and feel empowered when each member of the
family is part of the planning process.
Here are some suggestions and tips to help include the entire family in
preparing for emergencies:

Post on your
resource board
or include in your
newsletter for
parents!

Work together to build an emergency kit Involve children in

creating or reviewing a list of the items you think you will need for
emergencies that are common in your area. Ask your children to help think of items that
you may need. Work together to collect the needed supplies. Visit the Child Care Aware
of Kansas Disaster Preparedness & Safety Pinterest board for ideas and sample emergency
supply lists.
Hold emergency drills at your house Just like any other learned skill, practice is important
for knowing and remembering what to do if under stress. Practicing drills can help to
determine what parts of your plan work and what may need to be changed.
Sit down as a family to talk about your escape plans Role play what you would do during
a disaster to make sure your family members get to the right place. The whole family should
practice meeting at the predetermined safe spot, outside, if there was a fire in your house.
Make it a team effort Assign each
member a task or job, and practice these
duties during drills. Even very young
children can have a role, such as carrying
a small backpack with supplies.
Talk with your child care provider Find
out their emergency plans for a variety
of disasters. Ask your child questions
about the plans and drills at child care.
Knowing what to expect can help lower
parental anxiety when you are apart, and
can help you to quickly get reunited with
your child if an event occurs!
Emergencies can be frightening, but
preparation helps to reduce fear and trauma,
and to speed up recovery.

Myth: When a baby starts to get

hungry, shell cry.

Fact: When a baby is hungry, she will open her mouth,

stick out her tongue, and move her head from sideto-side. While sleeping, she may start to squirm. If
her hand is near her mouth, she may try to suck on it.
Feeding before she cries will prevent crying. Crying is a
sign of distress and can mean many things.

When a baby is full, he will move away from the food.

Never prop a bottle, because it forces a baby to eat
more than he wants. It makes him overeat and can
increase vomiting. Just like adults, a baby knows when
he has had enough.
