PLANNING FOR TEACHING
Lesson Content Area (i.e. math, language, science)
Science
Grade Level
3
Title of Lesson
States of matter
Grade 3- Standard 4.0 Chemistry
Students will use scientific skills and processes to explain the composition, structure, and interactions of
matter in order to support the predictability of structure and energy transformations.
OBJECTIVES (from standard 4.0 A.1)
Classify objects based on their observable properties.
Provide reasons for placing the objects into groups.
Compare classifications with those of others.
Teacher Preparation/ Equipment & Materials
Powerpoint, worksheet, cheerios, and computers so the class can access kahoot.
Technology
We will use the powerpoint to lecture.. We also used GoogleDrive to store our information prior to
the lesson. We will use the promethean board to display the objectives as well as write information
as needed.

Standard 3.0 Technology for Learning and Collaboration: Use a variety of technologies for
learning and collaboration
TEACHING THE LESSON
Introducing the Lesson: (Your lesson objective(s) MUST be visible to students before you begin
teaching) Describe
Students will be able to describe, observe, model, and draw the different states of matter: solid, liquid, and
gas.

Warm up: Go over objectives, introduce powerpoint and go over prior knowledge of the states of matter.
Plans for DifferentiationStudents will be able to see the slides and take notes if they choose, they also will be able to do
some hands on activities with the cheerios, which is a visual display of what we are teaching. Lastly,

they will do a kahoot to test their learning and to incorporate technology into our lesson.
Procedures for teaching the Content
Explain #1: We will go through the powerpoint, asking questions throughout in order to test prior knowledge
and to see what needs to be addressed before the activity.
Explore #1: We will pass out the worksheets and cheerios and allow the students to use what they learned
from the lecture and apply it to a hands-on activity.
Explain #2: We will discuss what the class has done with their cheerios, and answer any questions they
have.
Explore #2: We will use Kahoot to test the classes knowledge, and provide a fun closure to the lesson.
Summary and Lesson Closure
We will use Kahoot to test the students knowledge after the lesson by using a fun virtual, personalized
review game as a closure.
Formative Assessment Our kahoot activity is our formal assessment, to see which students fully understand, and which did not
quite get the material.
Extension of learning
We will ask students to go home and see if they can think of how in liquid, solids and gasses may change
with temperature. We will hint to think about the weather outside and season changes.

Definition of Terms

Differentiating Instruction: To differentiate instruction is to recognize students varying background

knowledge, readiness, language, preferences in learning, interests, and to react responsively.

Formative Assessment: Measurements which allow one to determine the degree to which students know
or are able to do a given learning task, and which identifies the part of the task that the student does not
know or is unable to do. Outcomes suggest future steps for teaching and learning
