b. Compare the observable properties of objects before and after they have been subjected to various
processes
c. Ask and seek answers to what if questions about what might happen to the materials if different
processes, such as heating, freezing, and dissolving were used to change them.
TPACK: Think about the TPACK model and answer the questions below regarding your lesson planning:
What ONE aspect of the content will you focus upon for your lesson (remember that this is an
abbreviated session, so you dont want to crowd too much into your teaching time).
We will focus on the basic definitions and examples in the content of our lesson. We will go over
the definitions of matter, solids, liquids, gases, and examples of each. Since it is an abbreviated
session we will not focus too much on how they become those states of matter, or on what the
molecules look like. It is a lesson teaching the basic idea of each state.

What method will you employ to teach the content (e.g. direct instruction, question/answer, have
students discover the information, or a combination of approaches)? (P/C)
We will use a combination method of instruction. We will begin with direct instruction with the
matter chatter song by teaching the students what matter is, and what the properties of each
state of matter are. We will then ask the students questions and have them answer based on the
information they just learned.

What role will technology tools play in your teaching of the lesson and/or student activity(ies)?
(P/C/T)
Technology will play a large role in the teaching of our lesson. A bulk of the teaching is done
through a Power Point, as well as the question and answer portion of the lesson. The students
will also watch a Youtube video to gather information about the topic.

What specific technology tools will you need to use to teach the lesson and/or have students do
activities?

C. Wood ISTC 301/501

We will be using Power Point, Youtube, and a Kahoot game in our lesson.
Maryland Technology Literacy Standards
Standard 2.0 Digital Citizenship: B.1.b. Work cooperatively and collaboratively with others when using
technology in the classroom.
Standard 3.0 Technology for Learning and Collaboration: B.1.b. Participate in a class lesson using
technology tools to collect, display, and interpret data.
TEACHING THE LESSON
Introducing the Lesson:
As a warm-up we will read the objectives on the Power Point together as a class. We will then engage the
students by watching the Matter Chatter video, which gives the basic information we will be learning in the
lesson.
Plans for Differentiation
The lesson is set up so that the same content is being presented in a number of ways to reach all types of
learners. It is first being presented as a song, which reaches the auditory learners. Then we take the parts of
the song and look for the key information, and sort the different objects into their proper categories, which
will reach the visual learners. Finally the students will get in groups to complete a states of matter chart,
which will reach the tactile learners.

We will read the objectives out loud as a class.

The students will listen to and watch the Matter Chatter song.
As a class, we will dissect the song, and look at what the song was talking about.
We will talk about each individual state of matter (solid, liquid, and gas) as explained in the video, and
discuss examples.
As a class, we will sort different words on the smart board into their proper states of matter.
The class will break up into groups and will work together to list properties of each state of matter and
provide examples.
We will come back together as a class and examine each groups findings.
We will play a Kahoot game to assess the students knowledge

Summary and Lesson Closure

We will talk briefly about how the students think each of the states of matter gets to the way they are. Take an
ice cube, for example. We will discuss what it looks like at each state in the lesson, and the students with
hypothesize how it comes to become the object it is at each state. The methods of changing to different states
of matter will be discussed in a later lesson.
Formative Assessment
We will play a game of Kahoot at the end of the lesson, which will give us a general idea of who understood
the lesson, and who may need some more help on the properties of the three states of matter.
Extension of learning

C. Wood ISTC 301/501

As an extension of learning we will give a homework assignment to the students. They will have to find an
example of each state of matter in their home, draw a picture of it, and list the properties they can remember
from class.
