ENS 1010: Introduction to Stewardship

Students develop an understanding of the social, economic and political significance of environmental
stewardship by creating a personal definition of environmental stewardship and examine the historical
context of environmental stewardship.

Outcomes:
1) Define environmental stewardship based on research and legislation and personal experience and
relationship with the natural and modified environment.
2) Describe ways in which human intervention has affected the environment through land use practices,
soil, water and air quality, wildlife habitat and natural areas.
Compare and contrast philosophies of
conservation and preservation, declining reserves, environmental impact.
3) Describe:
a) the historic and global development of environmental stewardship since the mid 19th century
b) the implementation of legislation and policies that impact environmental stewardship, provincially,
nationally and internationally
c) different cultural views (First Nations, Metis, Inuit, French Canadian, immigrant populations)
regarding environmental stewardship.
d) social, economical and political impacts of environmental stewardship
4) Complete a personal inventory of interests, values, beliefs, resources, prior learning and experiences
as they relate to environmental stewardship

Environmental Stewardship is an ethic that embodies cooperative planning and management of


environmental resources with organizations, communities and others to actively engage in the
prevention of loss of habitat and facilitate its recovery in the interests of long term sustainability.

ASSIGNMENT 1

1) With reference to the definition above, and using policies from government and private
organizations (Ducks Unlimited, Alberta SRD, Greenpeace etc), create your own, personal
definition of Environmental Stewardship (ES). You will do this by creating a short slide show
with explanation (minimum 5 slides).

After researching the definition of environmental stewardship, create a minimum 5 slide power
point that expresses your idea of what Environmental Stewardship is. Each slide must be
accompanied by an explanation of how that slide represents some, or all, of your definition of
ES.

Human intervention has, and continues to, have a major affect on the environment. For
this assignment, in PowerPoint format, use the resources provided to investigate and
answer the following questions:

Part 1
1. How has the extensive use of fertilizers affected soil and water quality? (minimum 5
slides). Use text and pictures to demonstrate the following.

A) First choose a specific example, a country or region or river etc., and explain why you chose
this area. (slide 1)

B)Then explain why people use fertilizer. (slide 2)

C)Then discuss the general effects of fertilizer use on soil (slide 3) and water quality. (slide 4)

2. What are some of the effects of human activity on wildlife habitat and on the efforts of
those concerned with conservation and preservation of resources?
To Do:
A. Chose two resources that are important in your area and describe why they are important to
the region. You may want to show pictures and graphs to do with employment and finances,
(minimum 2 slides)

B. Using the resources you have chosen, create a presentation (minimum 2 slides for each
resource) that shows what the affects are in terms of conservation of wildlife habitat and in
terms of resource preservation

C. In a 5 slide presentation, explain/show 5 ways that are suggested to improve the


conservation of wildlife habitat and preservation of resources.

3) Create a timeline of the development of environmental stewardship from the mid 19th
century to the present (1850-2011). The timeline must include 10 major events, legislative
events or policies (eg National Parks, Wilderness Preserves). For each event, you must
explain why it was done (eg. the economic benefits of preserving natural areas, or top stop
extinction).

4) In a short report, (written or a Power Point) compare and contrast the different
perspectives regarding environmental stewardship from various ethnic groups. e.g. How
would a First Nation's group view the impact of a new oil refinery on the environment?
Contrast their viewpoint with that of a multinational energy corporation.

A. Watch the following video (approx 1 hr) and take notes on a minimum 3 main issues.
Create a chart that you will use as the basis of your report. (there will be about a minute
of advertisements before the show starts.
