Information and Instructions Edmund Scientific Co., Barrington, New Jersey 08007 HOLOGRAMS Your hologram was made by a set up using diverging beams of laser light (Fig.1) and is basically a recording of interference fringes formed by light scattering from the object and interfering with a light from the reference beam, This re- cords 3 dimensional images on 2 dimensional film, Examine your hologram carefully; you will see that it does not resemble 2 regular film in any way. The surface of the film shows only a random series of fringe patterns of various sizes, Co ee ee rd RIGURE 1 —_ Laser Point Source m Plate Object Chessmen HANDLING YOUR HOLOGRAM Always pick up the hologram at the edge to keep finger prints from the hologram area. HOW TO HOLD YOUR HOLOGRAM A hologram must be held in the correct position to see the images, If not, the images will appear upside down or they won't be visible at all. Hold the hologram in the beam of light from the light source and tip it slowly and see if the images appear; if not, turn it around and view the other side. Try viewing it in various positions, When you have the film in the correct position, cut a small piece off the upper right hand corner so you will have the correct position the next time you view the hologram. VIEWING TRANSMISSON HOLOGRAMS NOS. 41,090 - 40,969; 40,984; 60,687 Viewing this type of hologram requires a monochromatic filter. This is included with your hologram, A fairly intense light source should be used. A good fast way to view the 3D images is to mount your filter on a square of aluminum foil after cutting a hole in the foil a little larger than the filter area on the 2x2 square, Use masking tape or cellophane tape for this, After you have mounted the filter, form a cup to fit over your projector's lens or a high intensity desk lamp. Do not keep the high intensity lamp on for long periods of time as the heat build-up will burn the filter, Hold the hologram in the beam of light and v image. If no image appears, turn the hologram around until the image appears sharp, about 4 inches in back of the hologram or between the light source and the hologram, See Figure 2. Do not look at the hologram but through it. Aluminum Fe spe On 2x2!" Filte jew the 711164--1 NOTE: a: 1¢transmiseion holograms will have to be placed further from the light source due to the larger area of light needed to cover the image. Hold the hologram about 3 feet away from the light source and slowly move tho film away from the light source until the images are satisfactory to you, Be sure to keep the film in the light hear when moving back. BUILDING A VIEWING BOX FOR TRANSMISSION HOLOGRAMS Fig. 3 shows drawings of a good box for conveniently viewing your transmission hologram, Dimensions are approximate, but the best way to build the box is te select the light source and test as described above before building the box, Black adhesive, flock paper, our stock #70,621 is excellent for lining the inside of the box, This assures maximum contrast, Dead flat black paint our atocis # 60,608 ean aleo be uced, If you have a 500 watt, 35mm transparency projector, thie can algo be used for a Light source, Fasten the filter to the projection lens with aluminum foil, again allow only the filtered light to strike the hologram, See Figure 2, tf as —| YA" space BETWEEN ap § fee 6E-* ies SIDE ViEW Ke | izveur i= tt TRANSFORMER yt see vext ! yeeR ZB ApPROX. 135 ————————— (3 needed) FIGURE 3 Masi OR FRAME WITH BLACK ABE PEMEL BES Ftc PAPA WO.70,62t On PLAIN BEAK CARDBUARD. CAUTION: 1: you intend to view the hologram for long periods of time, allow an air-space between the light source and filter to prevent heat from damaging the filter, The best distance between the filter and hologram for viewing will depend upon the intensity of the light source and your preference, To determine this, hold the holograra close to the filter and move it slowly away while viewing the {mages. When you have the best images, meagure the distance and use this for building a viewing box, Tiled --2 DOUBLE IMAGE HOLOGRAMS NOS. 41,091-41,094 se are transmission types of holograms and are viewed the same way as the transmission types, however, there are two separate objects on the one hologram, To reconstruct these images; hold the film in the beam of the light source and turn it until the group of geometric shapes appear in the air between the light source and the hologram, After you have these as clear as possible and with maximum brightness, rotate the film 180 degrees without moving it from the light beam. The image of a dinosaur will then appear. See Figure 4. FIGURE 4 FIGURE 5 35 mm 500 Watt Projector Projector Viewing Double Image Transmission] Hologram Geometric Shapes Rotate Hologram Viewing 180° To See Reflection Hologram Dinosaur REFLECTION HOLOGRAM NO.41,093 Licht Source Reflection holograms essentially have their own interference filters "built-in,’ Therefore, it is not necessary to have a monochromatic light source for recon- struction, In fact, it is not possible to reconstruct a reflection hologram with a chromatic light source unless the wavelength is in the "pass band" of the reflection hologram!s intereference filter, Satisfactory reconstruction can be obtained with any bright white light source which roughly approximates a point source, For example, the sun, a slide, or movie projector, or the popular desk lamps. Stop the light source down with foil to about 1/2" square. General: Put out room lights or darken room, Let light from a suitable light source fall over your left or right shoulder on to the plate, Adjust the orientation of the hologram to maximize brightness of the reconstructed image. that this hologram will reconstruct is an arrangement of geometrical shapes, See Figure 5. he scene 711164 - PROJECTED REAL IMAGE HOLOGRAMS NOS. 41,092-41,095 This type of hologram shows a realimage of a dinosaur projected out in the air in ront of the hologram, Probably the best ight source to see this type of hologram is a 35mm, 500 watt projector, When set- ting up for this, make an aperture in alu- minum foil about 1/4" in diameter and tape the filter over this, Mount the filter over your projection lens keeping the filter about 1" away from the lens, 1, Mount the hologram on a piece of card- board about 12" x 12" approx. 3-1/2 feet from the projector; stand this on a piece of wood with a slot in it, (Figure 5.) 2, Put out the lights and switch on the pro- Jector and move it until the beam of light is striking the hologram. The cut off should be at the upper right hand corner of the hologram, Place the hologram slightly to the right of the Ught beam, You should see a virtual image of the dinosaur, 3, Without moving the base, turn the card- board mount 180 degrees so that the cut off is at the upper left hand corner of the hologram, » your eye about 10 feet from the hologram and a little to the left, You should see a magnified real image of the dinosaur projected out in front of the holo gram. 5. At first glance, the image may not ap- pear to be projected and seems to be on the film, but just relax and view the image a little while and the projected image will be seen, Sit in a chair and moveyour head until you see the projected real image much larger than the original virtual image. Note: If you want a brighter picture, order 's interference filter, No, 30,597.
