A-SSE 3a

3. Choose and produce an equivalent form of an expression to reveal and explain

properties of the quantity represented by the expression.
a. Factor a quadratic expression to reveal the zeros of the functions it
defines.

Learning Experience Outcomes

(knowledge/skills)

Learning Experience Assessments

1. Quadratic Formula Worksheet 1
2. Quadratic Formula Homework 1

Students will:
interpret parts of an expression, such
as various coefficients, factors, and
terms, in order to identify the different
components of an equation.
use the quadratic formula in order to
find the value of the variable used in an
expression and the roots of the
expression.
Differentiation (What will you do to meet the needs of students at these different levels?)

Procedures/Strategies
Day 1

(add additional days as needed)

Sponge Activity (activity that will be done as students enter the room to get them into the
mindset of the concept to be learned)

Students will describe different characteristics of presented graphs

Anticipatory Set (focus question/s that will be used to get students thinking about the days
lesson)

Did you know we can picture what these graphs look like without
needing to look at a picture of them?

Activating Prior Knowledge (what information will be shared with/among students to connect
to prior knowledge/experience)

They will know how to describe the graphs with words like straight,
curved, etc. from past experiences looking at graphs

Direct Instruction (input, modeling, check for understanding)

Standard Form: ax2 + bx + c

Show the class how to solve a quadratic equation using the
quadratic formula:

x=

b b24 ac
2a

EX: x2 + 3x + 1 = 0, interpret in standard form and plug into the

equation above and solve for x
Second EX: 4x2 3x + 51 = 0

Guided Practice (how students will demonstrate their grasp of new learning)

Review the points made on Quadratic Formula Worksheet 1 as a

class
Using the guidelines for finding the roots of an equation and the
discriminant that are presented on the worksheet, the class will
answer the two examples together.

Independent Practice (what students will do to reinforce learning of the lesson)

Students will complete Quadratic Formula Homework 1 for

homework using the Quadratic Formula using the information they
have learned in the lesson. The homework is due at the beginning of
the following lesson.

Closure (action/statement by teacher designed to bring lesson presentation to an appropriate

close)

References:

It is very important to know how to solve quadratic equations with

the quadratic formula because we will be moving onto a new method
in our next lesson called completing the square.
