Yellow tinge in eyes or skin.

The yellow tinge can indicate a

common condition in newborns called jaundice. Jaundice
occurs because the babys liver is not mature enough to get
rid of bilirubin, the yellow pigment made during the
breakdown of red blood cells.

Danger Signs
in Mom and
the Newborn

Inconsolable crying. Crying is how baby communicates that

she/he is experiencing pain and is uncomfortable.
Bleeding, pussy drainage, or redness around umbilical cord
or circumcision. The first couple of days, small amounts of
bleeding from cord and circumcision is normal. Large
amounts could be a sign of hemorrhage or extensive
bleeding that needs to be stopped immediately through
treatment. Pussy drainage and redness could indicate an
infection.

DANGER SIGNS NEED TO BE

REPORTED IMMEDIATELY

What are danger signs in mom?

Chills or fever greater than 100.4F for 2 or more days. Fever
can indicate an infection or illness
Vaginal discharge (lochia) with change in amount, large clots,
bright red bleeding, and foul smell. Extensive bloody
discharge can indicate postpartum hemorrhage and may also
be accompanied with weakness, low blood pressure, and
pale, cool skin.

Calves with localized pain, tenderness, swelling, cramping,

warmth or coolness to the touch, and red or pale in color.
Women have an increased risk for blood clots postpartum. A
blood clot that develops in a vein in an extremity (especially
the legs) is called a deep vein thrombosis (DVT). A DVT could
lead to a life threatening condition called a pulmonary
embolism, a blockage of the arteries in your lung that will
cause respiratory distress.
Urination is painful, burning, and frequent with urine that is
dark yellow, foul smelling, or blood tinged. These signs could
indicate a urinary tract infection (UTI). A UTI is common after
delivery because of the trauma of delivery or bacteria that
entered from a urinary catheter.

What are the danger signs in a

newborn?
Incisions, episiotomies, or laceration sites are painful, foul
smelling, have an increase in drainage, become red and
swollen, and are not relieved by prescribed pain medication.
These are signs that there is an infection at the site.
Pain or tenderness in abdominal area that is not relieved by
prescribed medication. Pain that will not go away can mean
infection or another condition that needs treatment.
Breasts with localized pain, redness, tenderness, swelling,
and cracked nipples with fissures. These are signs that there
could be an infection in the breast called mastitis caused by
stagnant milk and growth of bacteria. Later stage of mastitis
develop flu like symptoms.
Feelings of depression or thoughts of hurting self or baby.
Baby blues are common a couple weeks following birth.
However, any signs of not being able to care for or hurting
self or baby, needs immediate attention.

Fever greater than 100F and temperature below 97.9F. The

newborn is very sensitive to fluctuations in temperature. Any
temperature out of the normal range needs immediate
attention.
Lethargy, poor feeding or little interest in food, forceful or
frequent vomiting, decreased urination, diarrhea, or
decreased bowel movements. These are signs that baby is ill.
Baby is not getting enough nutrition and is potentially
dehydrated.
Labored breathing with flared nostrils and no breathing
greater than 15 sec. Baby is in respiratory distress and needs
immediate attention. CPR training for the newborn or infant
is available.
