Introduction

This project is a continuation of the first project - an integrated project where it

involves construction detailing solution for Project 2b in Architecture Studio 2. This
project is designed to allow the demonstration of knowledge and understanding of
construction and application from prior project. Emphasis in producing related
manual construction drawing detail and specification.
Technical knowledge is viewed as something separate from design. One of the aims
of this assignment is to develop an awareness and understanding of the strong interrelationship between these two areas of study. Critical success of any design project
relies on a designers ability to address issues of appropriate methods of
construction, integration of structure and the selection of materials whilst addressing
the many other complex issues that are part of the design process.
This assignment will enable you to develop and demonstrate some knowledge of
construction, materials and structural theory in a small scale design project.

Objectives of Assignment

To develop an understanding of the structural elements in construction and its

application in the construction industry.
To apply suitable construction elements, material and detail/joint solutions
suitable for a specific design.
To demonstrate a comprehensive understanding and knowledge of build
ability.
To demonstrate awareness of how buildings are developed in response to
practical considerations.
To demonstrate certain levels of manual drawing and sketching skills.
To allow students to demonstrate their understanding and knowledge of
construction, material and technology.
To encourage students to produce manual sketches, drawings and detailing
relating to construction.

Learning Outcomes

Select suitable structural elements for their design project.

Design and apply a structural element for their design project.

Tasks - Methodology
Explore, Apply, Document and Explain.
This second assignment emphasizes on proposing details for certain sections of a
building, both structural and architectural detailing.
Your task is to identify and propose THREE (3) architectural/ structural details for the
selected element or part of the building apart from providing the necessary plans,
section and elevations.
The 3 details must use TIMBER or STEEL or COMPOSITE MATERIAL and it should
cover the following designs in your studio project:
1) Roof
2) Superstructure (wall/slab/staircase etc.)
2) Joint and connection
You are to strictly draw the details manually and NO computer aided drawings
will be accepted. Your details must have the appropriate specifications, symbols,
dimensions, and to reflect the proposed materials clearly. Your selected detail should
be details of interesting construction solutions for your design.
Particularly, you should be able to show and apply your knowledge in the details of
the building construction drawing that you provide and reflect your understanding of
the construction itself.
During tutorial sessions, please bring the following:

Your proposed design-sketches, drawing and model.

No more than one (1) typewritten A4 page summarising your research into
your proposed material(s) for the walls, floor and roof and construction
system. This will include: a description of the material/product and its
properties; standard sizes for the product; any additional relevant technical
information on the product which may be useful for designing and building.

Please provide the appropriate detailed references for the sources of all your
information in your typewritten submission. MUST BE IN HARDCOPY.
Drawings (Visual images, Annotated Sketches and drawings)

Construction process, methods, material, site context

Documentation should be in the form of pictures, sketches, drawings and
written

Analyse and Explain

Specification of material used in construction

Dimensions and sizes of components
Standards of descriptions
Procedures of constructing the components
Construction response to site context (environmental issues related to
sustainable development)

Submission Requirement

A2 presentation sheet in a clear cover containing the following: Scaled,

manually drafted, drawings of your developed scheme showing the integration
of the construction systems proposed, including site section (as per studio
requirement or scale 1:50.)
Provide at least one cross section of your building design in Project 2b in
Architecture Studio 2 (scale at 1:20 or appropriate scale)
3 nos. of detail drawings of selected elements.
Specifications of materials.
Complete Project 2 tutorial log sheet.
Drawing and sketches are meant to provide visual documentation and
communication. Hence they are required to be neat, clear and annotated.
Assumptions can be made through reference from book/drawings.
DO NOT PLAGIARISE. Application must be according to site, design and
climate context.

Suggested Format/content of A2 Presentation Board

Proposed detailing (DRAFTED MANUALLY AND SCALED)
Specification of materials annotated in drawing (type, dimension and etc)
Referencing (MUST)
Assessment criteria
The assessment for this assignment will be based on your

demonstrated understanding of the brief

quality of the documentation of drawings and detailing of the construction
elements.
appropriate use of drawing standards eg symbols, dimensions and
specifications.
quality and clarity of your drawings.
