Introduction
Building materials can be regarded as part of buildings members. It complements each and every building elements
such as floors, walls, columns, roofs and many more. Due to its characters, the application of building materials in
buildings can provide various perceptions to the end users and public in general. Choosing the right materials as
building finishes is important for the architects in order to signify the function, strength and durability of a space., Most
of the building materials are naturally occurring substances, such as clay, sand, wood, rocks and etc. have been
used to reflect the image of a building. Also, apart from naturally occurring materials, many man-made products in
various compositions are actively used as well. This assignment is designed to introduce building materials that are
commonly used in the construction industry. The spaces or building selected to study will allow one to understand the
reasoning behind choices made by architects / designers in terms of concepts, functions, environmental response,
structural requirement, availability of resources and etc. when selecting or proposing building materials for the
building design.
The Task
In a group of 6, students are to select an exciting commercial building that can give you experience in exploring most
of the building materials covered in the module. The commercial building can be as follows:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
Shopping mall
Art gallery
Sport complex
Performing art centre
Transportation terminal
Entertainment centre
Office building
Please note that students are required to go to the site and get permission from the building owner / management in
order to get access to building for this case study.
There are TWO main task need to be carried out for this project which are as follows:
TASK A: GROUP (TWO (2) A2 boards, landscape orientation. 1 Mood board is separate on its own).
1. Brief Introduction of the selected building & reason for selecting the space
2. Mood Board
- Your mood board should include color, pattern, photographs, sketches and informative design
elements to reflect the materials used and ambience of the space of your choice (without using
any words or description).
3. Identification of Materials
- Draw out plans, sections and elevations to indicate the materials.
- All drawings are to be drawn manually.
- Explain briefly the type of materials that are used in a specific area / space.
4. Application of Materials (minimum 15 types of materials)
- The physical and chemical properties of these materials
- Explain the suitability of material used in context to concept, occupancy, application, climate
and aesthetical value.
TASK B: INDIVIDUAL (One A2 board each student, landscape orientation)
1.
Form, Space and Pattern (Experiential analysis between the Materials & Spaces)
- Design Intention & Concept: How that has influenced selection of materials?
- Space Analysis: Experience within the space.
- Q: How the material selection and its application within the space affect users experience?
- Q: How the building design and concept influence the selection of materials?
- Include relevant sketches, photographs to support your analysis (Sketches, photographs etc.)
Submission Requirement
1.
2.
3.
4.
The group work (TASK A) must be formatted on A2 paper and compiled in a clear A2 folder.
The individual work (TASK B) must be collated together with TASK A
DO NOT BIND
Please include your names, student ID and project title for each work submitted.
Assessment criteria
Quality of work shall be assessed on the following criteria:
Understanding of effects and experience of building materials on building towards the surroundings
(environment, end users)
Clarity on findings and analysis in the presentation board.
Richness of your content.
Creativity on gathering the information.
Marking criteria
Individual (15%)
Group (25%)
