Reflection

The Philosophy of Religion course at Salt Lake Community College has been a very
educational and thought expanding class. Shannon Atkinson is an amazing teacher who uses a
great method of teaching that interacts with every type of student. I have learned to evaluate
logical arguments and see where the flaws may lay.
At first, I thought this class would look at specific religions and then we would dissect
them. However, I was deeply mistaken. We took the traditional western view of God (being
omnipotent, omniscient, omnibenevolent) and looked at all criticism from a theist perspective,
from an atheist perspective, and all inbetween (agnostic). We had the opportunity to understand
both sides of argument and establish a strong viewpoint of our own.
Through this signature assignment, the class and I have been able to go to a more in depth
research and understanding of critical arguments made by religious or non-religious
philosophers. The signature assignment requires deep thinking, credible research, and
philosophical writing. Helping students achieve how to think deeply, how to do credible
research, as well as how to write in a philosophical manner. All key traits of becoming a life
longer thinker as well as a lifelong scholar (learner).
I would recommend this class to anyone and everyone not only for a better understanding
of ones own belief, but also to help one understand others beliefs without judgement. This
course has been one of my favorite classes of all time, having a lot to do with the motivated class
and motivated teacher.
