GENERAL PROFILE
Territorial Organization and the Population. CDR consists of 13 rayons: Anenii Noi, Calarai,
Criuleni, Dubasari, Hincesti, Ialoveni, Nisporeni, Orhei, Rezina, Straseni, Soldanesti, Telenesti,
Ungheni, being the region with the most secondlevel administrative-territorial units.
The region extends on a10,734.5 sq.km surface
area which makes up about 31% of the countrys
total surface area.
Entrepreneurship. Small and medium enterprises play a leading role in the establishment of jobs
and the economic growth. 7,825 enterprises (large, medium, small, and micro) are registered in CDR.
SMEs keep holding a 98% share in the total number of enterprises and employ about 72% of the CDR
enterprises employees, contributing significantly to the creation of jobs. At the same time, the
density of enterprises is of 7 SMEs per 1,000 people.
Business Infrastructure. The business infrastructure from the region offers an engineered and
equipped, attractive and safe environment to companies interested in the launch of a business or in
the extension of a current business to deploy entrepreneur activities. This boosts the service market,
the lease of administrative and production facilities, and the full support of the residents business
development.
Agriculture.
From the total of agriculture land from CDR, 83%
is arable land, 9% orchards, 7% vineyards and
only 0.3% pastures. The share of the arable land
as compared to the total surface area of land in
the Central Region is 27.5%.
At the same time, CDR has the largest surface
area of permanent crops 40.3% of the total area
of permanent crops, followed by the South Region
(27.2%), North Region (24.0 %), ATU Gagauzia
(6.1%) and Chisinau municipality (2.4%.)
The share of the natural pastures and meadows
in the Central Region makes up 32%.The main
agricultural products are the vegetables, the
corns, the grapes, the technical crops, and the
tree crops. The agriculture keeps being the major
sector of occupation over 40% of the regions
economically active population.
b) Light industry (fabrics, knitted fabrics, apparel, leather and footwear) is developed in Ungheni,
Telenesti, Orhei, Ialoveni, and Calarasi rayons;
c) Furniture and paper industry;
d) Chemical and pharmaceutical industry;
c) Extractive industry (pebbles, gravel, boulders and flintstones, sand, monumental or building
stones, calcareous stones) is focused in Orhei, Anenii Noi, Straseni, and Teleneti rayons;
In the Center Region are located the most beautiful forests, named Codrii Moldovei,
offering recreation and tourism areas.
The region has a dense hydrological network, consisting of rivers and rivulets, contributing
to the formation of an ancient, large, and very deep valley, with terraced slopes.
The
archeological
complex
Orheiul Vechi is located in
the Raut river valley, a rightbank tributary of the Nistru
River, on the territory of
Trebujeni village, Orhei rayon.
It is one of the tourism sites
of major importance in the
Republic of Moldova, being
considered to be included in the
UNESCO World Heritage list. The
complex covers several tens of
hectares of the medieval city
of Orhei. Here, one can visit:
several caves, the ruins of some
fortresses, dwellings, baths,
cave monasteries, dating both
from the Tataro-Mongolian ruling
in the XIII-XIV c., and XV-XVI c.
The region abounds in historical, landscape monuments and natural reserves, such as:
Scientific reserves Codrii and Plaiul Fagului;
Natural and landscape reserved Molesti-Razeni, Sadova, Saharna, Tipova, and Trebujeni;
The Museum of Handicrafts from Ivancea village;
Picturesque sites from Saharna, Japca, and Tipova.
Over 250 of cult buildings of national importance and 27 of local importance are open to
the visitors, among which the ancient monasteries: Capriana, Curchi, Butuceni, Saharna,
Condrita, Dobrusa, Hirjauca, Racovat, and etc.
In the region the Museum Complex Orheiul Vechi is located a genuine historical jewel.
The Wine road runs through this area, with the most important wineries of the Region.
The region hosts three of the five leisure and treatment spas of the country.
The Orhei National Park is the first national park in the Republic of Moldova.
