GENERAL PROFILE

Territorial Organization and the Population. CDR consists of 13 rayons: Anenii Noi, Calarai,
Criuleni, Dubasari, Hincesti, Ialoveni, Nisporeni, Orhei, Rezina, Straseni, Soldanesti, Telenesti,
Ungheni, being the region with the most secondlevel administrative-territorial units.
The region extends on a10,734.5 sq.km surface
area which makes up about 31% of the countrys
total surface area.

Territorial Cooperation Structures. In

The Central Development Region(CDR) is a territorial unit making up the planning,


implementation, and evaluation framework of the regional development policy.
From the territorial viewpoint, the region lies in the central part of the Republic of Moldova,
sharing its borders with 4 national development regions (North, South, Transnistria (at the East)
and Chisinau municipality), as well as with the North-East Development Region of Romania (at the
West).
CDR is the region covering the largest surface area and the number of population out of those 6
development regions of the Republic of Moldova.
The regions surface area represents the administrative territory of 13 rayons (second-level
administrative-territorial units) consisting of first-level administrative-territorial units (villages,
communes, and towns).
To promote and coordinate the regional development objectives, the Development Regional Council
(DRC), a deliberative structure, and the Regional Development Agency (RDA), a public entity, were
established at the regional level.

the context of regional territorial cooperation,


the CDR rayons are part of various cooperation
structures. It is highly worth mentioning the
Euroregions that are territorial structures
established to strengthen the interregional and
cross-border cooperation through the creation
of a coherent economic, scientific, social, and
cultural development area. Thus, CDR is present
in two of such relevant entities Siret Prut
Nistru Euroregion (Romania Republic of
Moldova) and Nistru Euroregion (Ukraine
Republic of Moldova).

Population of the Central Development Region


makes up currently1 023 001 people, which
represents about 30% of the total population.
The regions population is concentrated in
598 localities organized in 329 first-level
administrative-territorial units: 14 towns and
315 villages (communes). The total number of
the regions localities makes up 36.6% of the total
countrys localities. The rayons with the number
of population exceeding 100 thousand people
are: Hincesti, Ialoveni, Orhei and Ungheni.

Entrepreneurship. Small and medium enterprises play a leading role in the establishment of jobs
and the economic growth. 7,825 enterprises (large, medium, small, and micro) are registered in CDR.
SMEs keep holding a 98% share in the total number of enterprises and employ about 72% of the CDR
enterprises employees, contributing significantly to the creation of jobs. At the same time, the
density of enterprises is of 7 SMEs per 1,000 people.
Business Infrastructure. The business infrastructure from the region offers an engineered and
equipped, attractive and safe environment to companies interested in the launch of a business or in
the extension of a current business to deploy entrepreneur activities. This boosts the service market,
the lease of administrative and production facilities, and the full support of the residents business
development.

Ungheni-Business Free Economic Zone was


established in 2002, in Unghenis industrial area.
The strategic geographic location of the free
economic zone contributes to the attraction of
local and foreign investments. Bordering the
European Union, this area is of high interest to
foreign investors, and its location at Unghenis
North-West side, with access to the railroads,
connects the Northern, Central, and Southern
areas of the country and provides links to the
exterior. Here, 31 residents conduct their
business activity employing 2,133 people.
CAAN Industrial Park lets and leases
administrative facilities, offices, manufacturing
facilities, warehouse facilities, with all the
required utilities, to foreign and local investors.
The park offers manufacturing and administrative
facilities of 75,000 sq. m., covering asurface area
of over 16 ha and an adjacent, unused land plot
of 21 ha for extension, with a strategic location
in the industrial area, at only15 km distance
from Chisinau municipality.

Triveneta Cavi Development Industrial Park


is located in Starseni town, on 11 ha land plot.
The manufacturing shed has a surface area of
about 13,600 sq. m., being the largest enterprise
of the Italian corporate group La Triveneta Cavi
SPA
There are 3 business incubators in CDR:BI
Nisporeni, BI Rezina and BI Dubasari. Through
their activity, these business incubators from
the region contribute to the promotion of
principles of business incubation among people,
and especially among beginner businessmen,
expansion of the development capacities of the
Business Incubators and their residents, and strengthening the absorption capacities and efficient
use of public and donated funds.

Industry. Potential industrial specialization sectors in CDR are represented by:


a) Agri-food industry (flour, sausages, meat, bread and pastry products, vegetables and fruit juices),
whose potential is focused in Anenii Noi, Orhei, Hincesti, Telenesti, and Ungheni rayons;

Agriculture.
From the total of agriculture land from CDR, 83%
is arable land, 9% orchards, 7% vineyards and
only 0.3% pastures. The share of the arable land
as compared to the total surface area of land in
the Central Region is 27.5%.
At the same time, CDR has the largest surface
area of permanent crops 40.3% of the total area
of permanent crops, followed by the South Region
(27.2%), North Region (24.0 %), ATU Gagauzia
(6.1%) and Chisinau municipality (2.4%.)
The share of the natural pastures and meadows
in the Central Region makes up 32%.The main
agricultural products are the vegetables, the
corns, the grapes, the technical crops, and the
tree crops. The agriculture keeps being the major
sector of occupation over 40% of the regions
economically active population.

b) Light industry (fabrics, knitted fabrics, apparel, leather and footwear) is developed in Ungheni,
Telenesti, Orhei, Ialoveni, and Calarasi rayons;
c) Furniture and paper industry;
d) Chemical and pharmaceutical industry;
c) Extractive industry (pebbles, gravel, boulders and flintstones, sand, monumental or building
stones, calcareous stones) is focused in Orhei, Anenii Noi, Straseni, and Teleneti rayons;

Livestock. According to the General Agricultural


Census, 32.9% of the total cattle, 42.2% - pigs,
40.7% - goats and 19.8% - sheep are focused in
CDR. Also, the biggest share of poultry (36.1%) is
in the Center Region.

In the Center Region are located the most beautiful forests, named Codrii Moldovei,
offering recreation and tourism areas.
The region has a dense hydrological network, consisting of rivers and rivulets, contributing
to the formation of an ancient, large, and very deep valley, with terraced slopes.

The
archeological
complex
Orheiul Vechi is located in
the Raut river valley, a rightbank tributary of the Nistru
River, on the territory of
Trebujeni village, Orhei rayon.
It is one of the tourism sites
of major importance in the
Republic of Moldova, being
considered to be included in the
UNESCO World Heritage list. The
complex covers several tens of
hectares of the medieval city
of Orhei. Here, one can visit:
several caves, the ruins of some
fortresses, dwellings, baths,
cave monasteries, dating both
from the Tataro-Mongolian ruling
in the XIII-XIV c., and XV-XVI c.

The region abounds in historical, landscape monuments and natural reserves, such as:
Scientific reserves Codrii and Plaiul Fagului;
Natural and landscape reserved Molesti-Razeni, Sadova, Saharna, Tipova, and Trebujeni;
The Museum of Handicrafts from Ivancea village;
Picturesque sites from Saharna, Japca, and Tipova.
Over 250 of cult buildings of national importance and 27 of local importance are open to
the visitors, among which the ancient monasteries: Capriana, Curchi, Butuceni, Saharna,
Condrita, Dobrusa, Hirjauca, Racovat, and etc.
In the region the Museum Complex Orheiul Vechi is located a genuine historical jewel.
The Wine road runs through this area, with the most important wineries of the Region.
The region hosts three of the five leisure and treatment spas of the country.

Moldovas Wine Road includes 29 wineries, the most


beautiful being those of Cricova, Nisporeni, Miletii Mici,
Romaneti, and Ialoveni. Besides renowned European
wines such as Chardonnay, Pinot, Riesling, Cabernet,
Aligote, every guest can appreciate the local, highquality wines made of Rara Neagra, Feteasca, and
Plavai grapes.

The Orhei National Park is the first national park in the Republic of Moldova.

GEOGRAPHICAL AND ENVIRONMENT FEATURES

REGIONAL PROJECTS

Forestry. CDR is characterized


by the richest forestry in the
country, represented by the
Moldovan Codrii and other
forestry areas (wind-breaks for
agricultural lands, roads, water
basins, and etc.). Currently, the
forestry makes up 20.8% of the
regions surface area (12.4%
country average) and 52.9% of
the countrys forestry area.
Hydrological Network and
Groundwater
The regions localities are
supplied with water from the
local sources (artesian wells, springs, and
wells), and from Prut (Ungheni rayon 2 water
intakes, Nisporeni and Hnceti by one water
intake, which will soon be operable) andNistru
rivers. The Nistru River is the main source of
water supply to the population, factories, and
industrial facilities of Rezina rayon, and to
Ialoveni town through Apa Canal Chisinau
water supply network.

Useful Mineral Resources. CDR is rich in useful mineral

deposits for the production of building materials the carbonate


rocks: limestone, marls, clayey raw material, sands, sand and
gravel formations, diatomite and tripoli. The limestone deposits
are found in the vicinity of Branesti, Morovaia, and Jeloboc
villages from Orhei rayon, with 18 Mio m reserve, and Soldanesti
rayon 6.3 Mio m.
