Abstract Sculpture

Description
You will be creating an abstract sculpture made from found materials. It will made
using a theme (ie. Person, scene, object, etc.), and the materials used to make it
can be any found material, not usually associated with the object or theme.

Part #1
In your sketchbook, develop your idea of what your sculpture is.
Create a rough sketch of your sculpture, what it will look like from a few sides
map out your plan of construction
Write out a list of materials you plan to use for your project (wood, plastic,
wire, hangers, gears, metal, cans, paint, clay or plasticine, etc).
Decide in the size and scale of the sculpture. Make sure it is no larger than 3
feet tall.

Part #2
Assemble your materials. Once you are ready, start construction of your project.
Remember:

Keep in mind your internal structure of the sculpture.

o How will it stand up?
o Do you need internal supports?
What will the outside of the piece look like?
o What colors will the materials need to eventually be? Should you paint
some parts before assembly?
o Practice "dry-fitting" your parts together to make sure it will fit before
you assemble with glue or tape (or whatever you afix your pieces
with).
How will you finish the piece?
o Do you have details made on more than one side of the piece (at least
two sides)?
o Will it be painted? What colors? What kind of paint?
o Sanded?
o Stained?
Make sure you have planned out each part of your build so that it will be
without difficulties, and that you have all your materials. If you need
something from Mr. Cooper (glue sticks, tape, white glue, certain materials,
sand paper, etc.), let him know what it is and he will try to get it.

Part #3
Write a description of your piece. Included in the description you should have:

A name of the piece

An explanation of your piece:
o What does it mean?
o Why did you create it?
o What does it mean to you?
o What type of emotion should it convey to the viewer?
Describe the materials that were used to make it.
