Lesson Idea Template
Name: Taylor Mclain
Grade Level: 2nd
Content Area: Science
Standards Addressed: S2CS6. Students will be familiar with the character of scientific knowledge
and how it is achieved. Students will recognize that: a. When a science investigation is done the way it
was done before, we expect to get a similar result. b. Science involves collecting data and testing
hypotheses. c. Scientists often repeat experiments multiple times and subject their ideas to criticism by
other scientists who may disagree with them and do further tests. d. All different kinds of people can be
and are scientists.

Describe how you would use the Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in
your classroom:
Students will assume the role as scientist and collect data about the weather for two weeks. They
will track temperature, wind speed, humidity, and precipitation. After collecting their data they
will add it into the journey north system and compare their data with those of other students
around the world. This activity will be done in whole group.
What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a
classroom? Computer, Interactive board, weather app, thermometer
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them
may not be addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level.):
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often
beyond their school: Publishing their data in journey north and comparing in with
the data of other students in different schools
b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (collecting original data and or
producing original products as a result of engaging in the project): Collecting data
for the course of two weeks and entering it into a real-life database
c. Higher-order thinking: students must be able to engage in the activity as if they are
real scientist and understand the data they are collecting is relevant to them and
others
d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their
product: Publishing their data into Journey Norths database where real scientist
and students can access it

What Level of Technology Implementation best describes this learning activity and Why?
This activity is at a LoTi level 6 because students have a high degree of technology use since they
are accessing it every day. They are producing quality products (data), and their work will make
an impact on others.

How could you implement this proposed learning experience and still comply with your districts
Internet Safety and Student Privacy policies? Journey North is great as it already provides a safe
way for students, teachers, and scientist to communicate. Since this project is a whole group
activity no individual student will be singled out.
