HOME OF THE SHARKS

December 2016

Center for the Fine and Performing Arts

Dear Colgan Families,

I hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving and a chance to relax and enjoy some family time. December
always feels like a quick month here at school because so many things are going on. Our band, orchestra,
chorus, and dance students all have different winter concerts/performances. Our winter sports teams begin
their official seasons. Our teachers continue to work hard in the classroom trying to use every instructional
minute to benefit students.
This year, winter break begins on December 22 (last day of school is December 21) and school reopens
Tuesday, January 3, 2017. As is the case during Thanksgiving break, by county regulation and our philosophy at
Colgan, students should not have homework over the winter holiday break. We want all students to have a
chance to relax and spend time with family. Students may be working on some long-term projects but nothing
that would be due to be completed the first two days we return to school (January 3 & 4).
We have just recently met with our Junior Class student leaders to begin discussions about Prom 2017 and
Graduation 2018 (yes, already!). The date and location for Prom will be announced shortly. The date and
location of Graduation (2018), will be announced in the spring so that families of the Class of 2018, will have
plenty of time to make plans.
If you are not aware, the School Board has already approved the School Calendar for the 2017-18 school year.
This information can be found on the School Divisions website. The first day of school is August 28, 2017 and
the last day of school is June 8, 2018.
Please be aware that some students have been crossing 234 to either walk to and from school, or go to the
convenience stores after school. This crosswalk is an approved crosswalk. However, if your son or daughter is
crossing 234 please urge them to use caution. The speed limit is 55 mph on 234. Although the School Division
has petitioned VDOT to put up school zone signs and lower the speed limit during arrival and dismissal times, as
of today it has not been approved. In any case, students need to be very careful both as walkers and drivers.
When making a turn in and out of the school please be cautious of the potential of people crossing 234. The
School Division does provide bus service to the neighborhood across 234, but some students still choose to
walk. Although this is a family decision, our recommendation is that students ride the provided school bus
rather than cross 234. If you have any questions about this please dont hesitate to contact the school.
Finally, our Principals Advisory Council does not meet in December. Our next meeting is scheduled for
Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 7 p.m. Meetings are held in the library. Parents, staff, and students regularly
attend the council, and anyone is welcome to observe the meeting. Additionally, there is always time on the
agenda for anyone in our school community to address the council about school issues.
Thank you again for your support of Colgan High School. I hope everyone enjoys the winter break!!
Sincerely,

Tim Healey

The Visual Arts students are preparing and submitting works of art in their first regional art
competition of the year. Off the Wall is a regional art competition sponsored by Lockheed Martin
and is open to all area high schools both public and private from Prince William County, Manassas
Park, and the City of Manassas as well as home school students. This is a unique competition in that
students must be first adjudicated into the art show. Art work is selected from digital submissions
submitted on November 21.
Students may submit fine art as well as photography and computer graphics. Accepted works of art
must then be matted and framed by the students for the art competition and submitted to the
gallery at the Center for the Arts in Old Town Manassas for hanging. The exhibition opening will be
held on Saturday, January 7, 2017 from 2-4 p.m. Awards will be presented to first, second, and
third place along with several honorable mentions. The artwork will hang in the gallery through
January 20, 2017 and then travel to Lockheed Martin for a facility exhibition throughout the month
of February.
