Hoop/Pin/Bucket Target Activity

Objective:
The objective of the exercise is for students to learn how to successfully use motor skills to properly throw a ball underhand
towards a target.
Materials:
The exercise will require a total of 12 hula hoops, 7 buckets, 7 bowling pins, 20 circular spots, 20 beanbags, and 20 fleece
balls.
Alignment with State Standards
The student demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical
activities building from Pre-Kindergarten through Kindergarten.
The student will demonstrate rhythmic patterns and manipulative ball skills.
Background Information:
At the beginning of the class, the teacher needs to place all of the circular spots around the middle circle in the gym. The
teacher will then place all of the buckets, hula hoops, and bowling pins at varying distances throughout the gym.
Engagement:
The second graders will be engaged very easily with the activity. As soon as they see the equipment in the gym, they will be
excited about participating in the activity. The teacher will also need to be enthusiastic while explaining the rules. With
second graders, it is important to constantly cue the students and remind them on the proper throwing techniques throughout
the activity.
Exploration:
1. The students will be made aware that there is equipment in the gymnasium and that they should not touch the equipment until
they are instructed to do so.
2. The students will then enter the room and be instructed to move immediately by frog jumping.
3. The teacher will ask the students to freeze and instruct them to vertically jump and act like a basketball player shooting a
basket.
4. The teacher will then have the students sit in their predetermined lines so they can explain the next activity.
5. The students will then be instructed to do a follow the leader activity where the person in front of their lines will do a
movement such as skipping or galloping with the teacher frequently switching the leader.
6. The teacher will then instruct the students to have a seat so that the target activity can be explained.
7. The teacher will explain that the students must stand on a circular spot so that they are still when they throw a bean bad or
ball into the bucket, hula hoop, or towards the bowling pin.
8. The students will be made aware that each time they make it into a bucket, hula hoop, or knock down a pin, they will receive
a point.
9. The teacher will reflect with the students at the conclusion of the activity.
Application:
The students can apply this by performing this activity with their friends outside of school. Physical activity is important for
students which is why learning this activity can be crucial to them.
Closure:
At the end of the activity, the teacher will have all of the students sit down. At this point, the teacher will ask them if they
enjoyed the activity and ask them about what their favorite part was.
Differentiation:
Students with a physical disability should not have any issues with this activity since the goal is to throw the bean bag or ball
at the target.
