Is There a Difference Project
Benchmark 1: Project Topics and Hypothesis
There is difference between music preference regarding gender. We believe this because
new-age music is more often targeted towards female audiences.
There is no difference between music preference regarding gender.
Benchmark 2: A Method For Collecting Data
We will send out an anonymous digital survey to the school and ensure that people fill it
out in our advisories.
The survey will be anonymous so students wont feel pressured to lean one way over the
other.
Benchmark 2.5: Create the Questionnaire

Benchmark 5: Is There Really a Difference Project Write-Up

We surveyed high schoolers on gender and music preference in terms of the year it was
released. We suspected that there would be a difference between music preference regarding
gender because new-age music is more often targeted towards female audiences. Therefore men
would be more likely to listen to older music. Our null hypothesis was that there would be no
difference between music preference regarding gender.
The sample we selected was accurate because all high school years were surveyed on the
subject. We kept them independent by sending out the survey online and allowing students to be
anonymous while taking it. We think the information was accurate because our sample was
surveyed anonymously, our topic wasnt serious enough to lie about (drug use, alcohol use, etc.)
, and we trust that our subjects didnt lie about gender or music.
It is believed that the hypothesis is true because the sample showed that men had a strong
preference towards old music and women had a slight preference towards new music.

From this process, I received more experience in evaluating and collecting data in
professional settings. I saw the importance in anonymity after seeing how many participants we
collected data from compared to surveys that did not offer that option. I also learned that our
hypothesis was correct, meaning that new music is more enjoyed by female audiences - despite
my doubts in the correctness of the hypothesis. In terms of issues in the survey, I feel that the

survey could have been more time specific, given music in 2008 could be a lot different than
music in the 80s and they were placed in the same category. Other than that, I feel that our
survey was very accurate and unbiased.

For our survey, when we created the survey, we also asked what grade the students were
in so we would know there was a variety of students answering the questions. Through the
survey I learned that the majority of the younger students in the High Tech system enjoys older
music over newer. I found this quite surprising because most younger students tend to like the
newer music. I don't believe we had any problems in our survey but, with the category of 2009
and below varies more than 2010 and above. I wouldnt want to change anything about our
survey, I feel like it wasnt biased and accurate.
