Commission conundrum

Dear Editor:
We expect the city commissions to
have the information and authority
needed to make honest and transparent
decisions that are in the best interests of
the community. After all, that is the point
of having commissions. This expectation
wasnt met for the Pomona College Master Plan.
When the planning commission raised
concerns about the design for the museum, they were told not to worry because the design was only conceptual
and the architectural commission (AC)
would have the ability to make substantive changes.
The planning commission did not approve the plan and neither then did the
city council until an ancient loophole in
our city code was unearthed that allowed
our standards to be lowered.
This very same conceptual design
for the museum then went to the architectural commission and, far from being
told that they could require a better or
new design, the commission was convinced that, because the council had approved the master plan, only minor
changes could be made.
The comments that the AC did make
were mostly ignored or rationalized
away by the college and its architect. The
college was in essence rewarded for digging in its heels, and we let them do it.
The planning commission also expressed concern about how Renwick
House and its gardens would fit in the
proposed location and were told not to
worry because the AC would sort that
out. Guess what? Last week, the AC was
told that the new position was already

locked in and, rather than discuss better

alternatives, they approved it.
So one commission was told that they
didnt need to worry because another
commission would be able to take care of
any problems, and the second commission was told that it couldnt make any
big changes because the plan had been
approved. Anyone see a problem here?
Pomona College benefited from this
lack of clarity in the roles and powers of
the commissions, but the community did
not. We need to fix this confusion before
the next major project appears.

True Americanism
Dear Editor:
One of the out-of-the-blue thoughts by
our next president was that anyone in the
country who burned the US flag ought to
be jailed or deprived of citizenship. No
doubt he did so thinking that that is true
Americanism.

Former Claremonter dies in Oakland warehouse blaze

ne of Em Bohlkas many defining qualities was her willingness

to go out of her way to help people. It was a trait recounted again and
again by friends and family who knew her
best.
Ms. Bohlka was one of the 36 people
who lost their lives in the Oakland Ghost
Ship fire on December 2. She was remembered as a kind, thoughtful and hilarious soul who was just embarking on a
new chapter in her life.
Her father, Jack Bohlka, noted his
daughters passion for helping poor, oppressed people who were living on the
edges.
Thats really a hallmark of her life,
Mr. Bohlka said. She was a really caring,
gentle, kind person. She was very philosophical and thoughtful.
Ms. Bohlka, 33, grew up in Claremont
and attended Bonita High School, eventually moving on to UC Riverside for her
bachelors degree in English and then Cal
Poly Pomona for her masters degree.
She met Natalie Jahanbani while working at Starbucks in La Verne, and they
were married in 2012.
She just had a sense of wonder at
every moment, Ms. Jahanbani said. I
think this is something people take for
granted. She really was insatiable for life
and hearing peoples stories, and she embraced the differences among us.
One of her oldest friends, Kassidy
Heal, remembered her as a kind and compassionate soul.
[She was] never unkind to anyone,
Mr. Heal said. If she ever hurt someone,
she was always quick to fix it and apologize. Her entire life was about self-improvement, being better than she was before.
Ms. Bohlka and Mr. Heal played music
together and had been friends since they
were both five years old. Mr. Heal recalled a poem Ms. Bohlka shared with
him that was deeply personal and beautiful.

Former Claremont resident Em Bohlka
perished in the Oakland warehouse
blaze that took 36 lives.

She always had a way with words,

whether written or verbal, he said. She
could express herself where you could
feel what she was writing. We loved her
for it.
John Dodson had been a friend of Ms.
Bohlkas since college, when she approached him because he was wearing a
shirt promoting one of her favorite punk
bands. They became fast friends, and Em
played a vital role in Mr. Dodsons life.
She helped me get through college,
bad jobs, good jobs, proposing to my
wife, planning a wedding and everything
in between, all while never asking for
anything in return, Mr. Dodson said.
She was someone I am so glad I got to
meet and know personally.
Ms. Bohlka was also known for her
sense of humor.
What I remember most was how she
could make jokes last forever and ever to
the point that people would be dry-heaving from laughter, Mr. Dodson said, relaying that she once wrote an entire rap
about the popular video game Skyrim
that she couldnt wait to show him one

she finished.
Since July 2015, Ms. Bohlka had been
living in Oakland with Ms. Jahanbani and
working at High Wire coffee shop in
Berkeley. The move to Oakland was a
signifier of new beginnings, as Ms.
Bohlka came out as transgender shortly
thereafter.
Mr. Bohlka remembers when she came
out to him while he was in Oakland for a
visit. He was only the second person she
came out to, the first being Natalie.
We went out to dinner, which turned
into a four-hour dinner conversation, he
said. I was so happy for her because, just
hearing her talk about coming out at last,
she was who she was supposed to be.
In one of their final conversations, Ms.
Bohlka relayed to her father how she was
dealing with hormone-replacement therapy (HRT) and the changes it was making
to her body.
We had just talked last week and I
asked How do you feel? he said. And
she said My skins getting softer and my
hair is getting finer, and I said, Thats
amazing,
But transitioning to her true self was
not without its challenges, even in the
progressive Bay Area. Mr. Bohlka mentioned a time when a passenger on the
BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) spit on
Ms. Bohlka while she was presenting herself as a queer femme.
It just broke my heart, Mr. Bohlka
said. Shes a person.
Life in Oakland was quiet, but the Ms.
Bohlka and Ms. Jahanbani had decided to
part ways in recent months because Em
wanted to move to New York. Still, Ms.
Jahanbani said, they spent every moment
together.
Mr. Heal remembered the last time he
went up to Oakland to see Ms. Bohlka,
three weeks before the fire. They walked
throughout the town, and Ms. Bohlka
showed him Golden Gate Park and other
sights around San Francisco.
You know, when people lose loved

ones, sometimes they have those dreams

where they went on this walk and talked,
and they wake up from this dream and
they have this feeling of their presence,
he said. It was that dream, but in real
life.
Mr. Heal noted that Ms. Bohlka had
unlovable tattooed on her chest, and he
would always tell her friend it was his
least favorite tattoo.
When they two met up in Oakland,
Ms. Bohlka, while employing some of
her trademark humor, confessed she had
experienced a change of heart.
She then said, You want to know
something? Its my least favorite now too,
because Im seeing how lovable I am,
Mr. Heal recalled. But this st hurt to
put on.
While the wounds are still fresh, Mr.
Bohlka hopes that his daughters tragic
death, as well as the deaths of other
LGBTQ people at the Ghost Ship that
night, will shed a new light on the plights
of the transgender community.
This whole thing happened because
the trans community, theyre subject to all
sorts of bullying and threats and so they
have to find places where they feel safe
with each other, he said. This space
where they were having the concert on
Friday night was a death trap.
The day of the catastrophe was like
any other, with Ms. Jahanbani and Ms.
Bohlka sitting in their home near Lake
Merrit, eating string cheese and talking
about their day. Ms. Jahanbani planned to
stay home and watch a movie, and Ms.
Bohlka had been invited by her friend,
Donna Kellogg, to a dance party at Ghost
Ship. Ms. Kellogg also died in the blaze.
Ms. Jahanbani dropped Ms, Bohlka off
at the BART station, and they said their
goodbyes. It was the last time she saw her.
Its very surreal because it was a day
just like any day, Ms. Jahanbani said.
There were many days like that. The only
difference was she never went home.

Third candidate qualifies for March city council race

laremont voters will have an election this March after a third candidate qualified this week. Anthony
Grynchal has officially entered the race.
Two seats currently held by Larry Schroeder and
Corey Calaycay will be up for grabs. Both incumbents
will seek re-election.
Mr. Grynchal, who also goes by Mr. Claremont
a moniker he formally trademarked in 2014is a real
estate associate with Re/Max Champions in Upland.
Claremont is my hometown, Mr. Grynchal said.
My fiance and I just bought our dream home here. I
love Claremont but, more importantly, I love the people.
Mr. Grynchal attended Western Christian in Claremont for kindergarten through eighth grade, moving on
to Damien High School from which he graduated in
2008. After high school, Mr. Grynchal earned his bachelors degree from Cal Poly Pomona.
For the last seven years, he has sold real estate professionally in Claremont and surrounding cities. In his

spare time, Mr. Grynchal has volunteered for the Claremont Homeless Advocacy Program (CHAP).
I sell homes, but I spend my time and money helping the homeless get moving forward in their lives, he
said. Its an honor to serve with my brothers and sisters at Pilgrim Place and give back in that way.
At 26 years old, Mr. Grynchal believes the city of
Claremont can benefit from a new perspective.
I believe we can do better. I believe our city can have
more financial transparency and Ive got a strategy to
get our water bills down, he said.
In addition to his work with CHAP, Mr. Grynchal is
cofounder and board director of World Hunger Solutions, an international nonprofit he launched as a senior
project while attending Cal Poly.
The organization, according to Mr. Grynchal, gained
considerable attention in India and now works to massproduce a tree he calls a human super food.
I grow the tree here at my home. Its a very powerful source of nutrition, he said.
Volunteer work aside, Mr. Grynchal said his motivation for running for city council is simple.
Long story short, I work hard, I state the facts and I

always apply common sense. Thats how I run my real

estate business, and I can apply those same principles to
the city and be of benefit.
Potential candidates need a minimum of 20 supporter signatures from Claremont residents who are also registered to vote. City Clerk Shelly Desautels recommends that candidates collect up to, but no more than,
30 in case signatures need to eliminated due to voter registration status or overlapping.
For this election, residents may only sign the nomination papers of two candidates; any more than that will
be disqualified.
Individuals interested in running for city council
must be at least 18 years of age, be a citizen of the United States and resident of the state of California, and be
a registered voter and resident within the Claremont city
limits.
Potential candidates should visit the city clerk at 207
Harvard Ave. to file. For information, contact Ms. Desautels at (909) 399-5460. The deadline to file is Monday, December 12 at 6 p.m.

Assemblyman discusses ethics, Trump at Sumner talk

hris Holden, who represents Californias 41st

Assembly District, is no
longer on the campaign trail,
having sealed the deal in November on a third two-year term
in state office.

COURIER photo/Steven Felschundneff

Assemblyman Chris Holden answers student questions about his career in public service last Thursday at Sumner Elementary School. Mr. Holden represents the 41st Assembly District, which includes the city of Claremont.

Lets put it this

way...its like sports.
Youve got your
teamsoccer, basketball, whatever. You
have the team you
support and when
your team doesnt win,
youre a little sad. My
team didnt win and
Im a little sad.

He is, however, a man of his word.

This fall, Sumner Elementary School
teacher Joe Tonanseeking to educate
his students about the political process
reached out to Assemblyman Holden as
well as his opponent, Republican hopeful Casey C. Higgins, asking them to visit
the school.
Mr. Higgins stopped by at the end of
September to talk to Sumner fifth graders
about his bid for office and the intricacies
of state politics. Mr. Holden said he was
too busy for a visit at the time, but would
give a presentation at the Claremont elementary school after things slowed down.
He followed through on Thursday, December 1, taking to the mic in Sumners
multi-purpose room.
Mr. Holdens appearance tends to garner a lot of attention. His prodigious
height was even noted by the Dalai Lama
when the Tibetan leader spoke to the California Legislature in June. Spotting Mr.
Holden, he said, Ooh, very tall.
Mr. Holden put his stature to good use
while attending Pasadena High School,
where he helped the basketball team win
two state championships. Mr. Holden
was recruited out of high school to play
basketball at San Diego State.
At age 23, he ran for the Pasadena City
Council and lost. He ran four years later
and won a seat. He went on to serve
nearly 23 years on the council, and was
the citys mayor from 1997 to 1999. He
was also president of the Burbank Airport
Authority for 20 years. In 2012, he was
elected to the California State Assembly.
Along with his professional accomplishments, Mr. Holden is proud of his
family, which includes his wife Melanie
and five children. His daughter Mariah
will graduate from New York University
with a degree in journalism in spring of
2017, he shared with a student who also
happens to be named Mariah.
Youre gonna do good things too, he
assured her.
Mr. Holden next described how legislation is passed, going through the State
Assembly and the Senate before being
passed onto the governor for his consideration.
If the governor likes the bill, he signs
it and it becomes law, Mr. Holden explained. If he doesnt like it, he vetoes
itessentially kills the bill.
Mr. Holden says his favorite part of the
job is his breaks from the political session
in Sacramento, when he is at home in his
district. It includes, among other cities,
Pasadena, Upland, Rancho Cucamonga,
La Verne, San Dimas and Monrovia as
well as Claremont, where the assembly
member maintains an office.
Mr. Holden then opened the floor for
students questions. One asked what Mr.
Holden would say to someone who

Chris Holden
on the presidential election

claims he won the election only because

he brought a lot of money to the campaign.
Each election, its been important to
go out and meet my constituentsto let
them know what my positions on the issues are, Mr. Holden said. Its really
about relationships.
He went on to describe how a politician like himself raises funds, through
small donations like those collected by
recent Presidential candidate Bernie
Sanders and a few larger ones.
The worst part of my job and the

hardest is raising money, he said. I

dont like it that much.
He prefers to focus on his priorities, including the environment and education.
He shared with the students a piece of
legislation that passed last spring, which
he is happy to have sponsored.
AB 288 paved the way for students to
take community college classes while
they pursue their high school education.
The legislation makes it possible for a
teen to graduate with progress toward
their college educationeven an associates degreeor career training. Perhaps
most importantly, it gives them a taste of
college life.
Asked if he has a hero Mr. Holden
cited his father, who was a state senator
from 1974 to 1978.
He taught me how important it is to
be a public servant, he said. Your
teachers are public servants. Its a tough
but rewarding job.
Another kid wondered how Mr.
Holden protects himself from people who
want favors.
You have to have integrity. Its all
about the issuesnot about people asking us to vote a certain way, Mr. Holden
said. Just because someone contributes
to your campaign doesnt mean they control you. It doesnt mean youll vote their
way. They should have no more access to
you than someone who is not a donor.
There was a kids-say-the-darndestthings moment when a boy queried Mr.
Holden about a couple of his priorities
listed on his website. It says you want to
have more housing for homeless people
and retired veterinarians, the boy said.
Mr. Holden agreed that homelessness
and the fate of American veterans are in-

deed issues he cares about.

There are so many people in the state
who are homeless, he noted. In a country thats this prosperous, we shouldnt
have veterans who have fought for us on
the street. Its a priority of mine to identify resources and money and ways to
create jobs.
Another student brought up Californias recent legalization of recreational
marijuana. Did Mr. Holden support Prop
64, he wondered?
Mr. Holden prevaricated for a moment.
Its a good crowd, he said. There are
no softball questions here, replied fifth
grade teacher Jason Remedios.
Im trying to pass bills getting people
to stop smoking cigarettes, Mr. Holden
said. It seemed like it was going in the
wrong direction, to say, Dont smoke
cigarettes, but its okay to smoke marijuana.
The final student question was a
doozy, given Mr. Holdens party affiliation. Are you happy about the presidential election?
Lets put it this way: No, Mr. Holden
laughed. Its like sports. Youve got your
teamsoccer, basketball, whatever. You
have the team you support and when your
team doesnt win, youre a little sad. My
team didnt win and Im a little sad.
Still, he said, we live in a democracy,
which Mr. Holden called the best political system around.
Im okay with the outcome, because
its the way people decided to vote, he
said. Lets put it this way. Ill get over it.
I think its going to be alright. After your
team doesnt win, you have to pick yourself up and keep working.

Picture-perfect holidays
by Debbie Carini

isit any website where you can

order holiday photo cards and
youll find the most picture-perfect
families awash in the glow of Christmas or
Hanukkah or New Years or any number of
end-of-year celebrations.

They look happy, well-dressed, organized and, most

importantly, unruffled by the sheer weight of activities,
expectations and family drama about to descend upon
them. No one is crying, no one is blinking, no one is
looking down-the-street instead of straight at the camera.
You ask yourself, Who are these families? as you
click through the many shapes, designs and typefaces
available. And how do they always manage to be photographed smiling and seemingly floating through the
air, about to land on a fluffy mattress of Christmas cotton candy?
Im cynical, yes, and yet I persist in joining the fun.
When I was a child, everyone sent Christmas cards.
My mother would string them up around the house or
tuck them in the shutter slats on the doors in the family
room. Lots of people sent update letters. Some were
whimsical and all carried news such as, Well, we added

a new family member this year or We saw the Grand

Canyon or Bubbles the goldfish didnt make it
through 1971.
Some were quite extensive, as if someone had kept a
year-long diary for just such a purpose.
Several years ago, my mother lamented that no one
sends pictures anymore. This was when she was still
feeling optimistic that photo processing and printing was
going to make it to the halfway point of the 2000s. Now,
even she has joined the bandwagon of Facebook, the internet and apps, knowing full well that if she wants to
see what her grandchildren are doing as they scatter
around the country (the globe!) in new jobs and opportunities, she needs to do that online.
But she still likes to send (and receive) Christmas
cards, and so do I. And I especially enjoy holiday photo
cards, when all participants are seemingly on their best
behavior, coiffed and composed.

The first Christmas card

received my first Christmas

card the week before
Thanksgiving. The card
was lovely, and the sentiments
even lovelier. But I felt somewhat annoyed because my
friend was so organized. I am
not sure we even got last years
Christmas cards mailed.
My second Christmas card this year
was a happy holidays card from my insurance company, one in which no one
knows my name unless I give them my
account number. I could have been annoyed because they only sent me the card
because they want to keep my account.
But then again, the very first Christmas
cards were created by the post office in
Great Britain as an attempt to save
money. And where would we be without
Hallmark!
But I was considerably less annoyed

And so, I found myself this week with a 40 percent off

coupon (natch!) and the perfect picture of my son and
daughter at my sons college graduation. Yes, you can
see his blue nail polish but overall the effect is holiday
heart-warming. My son looks like a giant present, he has
so many ribbons around his neckeach signifying an
honor society, an activity or club.
I know Im coming to a chapter where my kids may
want to age out of this wonderful custom. Oh, the years
of picturesstanding near a giant redwood in Sequoia
National Park, posed in front of the Hollywood sign or
in a multi-photo array of family activities that also included a shot of our cat drinking out of her favorite vessel in the bathroom and a tagline that read,Eat, Drink
and Be Merry!
Yes, weve shared a lot with our family and friends
through the years. In retrospect, perhaps more than they
wanted to know or see. And yet, I want to continue the
tradition.
Perhaps I feel a little like the mother in my childrens
favorite bedtime book, Robert Munschs 1986 classic
Love You Forever, in which she tells her children,Ill
love you forever, Ill like you for always. As long as Im
living, my babies youll be.
And I think that means they get to be in the Christmas
card for a long, long time, because I dont want it to be

by Rev. Mark Wiley, Claremont United Methodist Church

Inter-Faithfully SPEAKING

when I thought about how many people

wont receive Christmas cards this year.
Maybe they dont have a family. Maybe
they are estranged from their family.
Maybe they don't want their family to
find them. Maybe they are homeless.
Maybe they dont want to be traced or
tracked or have any footprints. Maybe
they dont bother with Christmas cards
because they dont have money. Or
maybe they just prefer tweets and Facebook greetings.
I was thinking that we should all try
our best to mail Christmas cards this year.
Consider it a pastoral recommendation.
But then I realized that some people will
send inappropriate Christmas cards. Our
mosque in Claremont has already received a letter declaring the new sheriff
in town was going to cleanse America of
all Muslims.

This is wrong on every level. Talk

about missing the point of Christmas!
Wasn't the first Christmas about peace on
earth, goodwill among all people, and joy
to everyone? At least thats what the angels were singing and announcing.
Of course, not everyone understood
the message, even on the first Christmas.
Most people slept through it! Herods response was even worse. He was shocked
at the news that a baby who would be
king was born and was not part of his
family lineage. So he arranged to have
every male child in Bethlehem under the
age of two to be killed. It was the first religious massacre associated with Christmas.
Herods hate, fear and brutality are
clearly with us still. Its easy to blame
others. Its easy to attack the many for the
attitudes of the few. Its easy to plot re-

venge, and even to make it happen. We

can all rage about injustice done to us. We
all like to have a sense of our own power.
And hurting others can temporally make
us feel powerful.
But there is a huge cost. What good
will it do to make us great again at the
cost of destroying the very things which
made us great in the first place? The more
we rage at others, the more we give fear
and hate a voice or a spotlight, the more
we lose of our own soul. And the more
we will never hear the peace and joy of
the angels song.
When the baby that Herod tried to kill
grew up, he spoke about loving ones
enemy and praying for the ones who
bully, tease and harm you. He understood
that hate and fear in every form works
against what God desires. Surely this is
the message we all long to receive, the
one God sent to us at the very first Christmas: that joy and peace comes to us as a
Christmas card from the God who loves
us all.

the mistreatment and discrimination

faced by Muslim-Americans in our
country.
It deeply saddens us to know that our
Muslim brothers and sisters are suffering at the hands of racism, xenophobia,
Islamophobia and threats of genocide.
No human being should have to endure or tolerate discrimination based on
his or her skin color, gender, sexual orientation, religion, political beliefs or
personal identities. Every act of racism
or discrimination is not only an act of
violence but it is also an attack upon
our shared dignity.
Every human being is endowed with
inalienable rights outlined in the United
Nations Universal Declaration of
Human Rights. Article 22 states
Everyone, as a member of society, has
the right to social security and is entitled to realization...of the economic, social and cultural rights indispensable
for his dignity and the free development of his personality.
We, as human rights activists, wholeheartedly and undoubtedly agree. To attack the dignity of another human being
is to make an attack upon their humanity, an act that dehumanizes; such are
actions which have proven to incite unspeakable acts of violence. Dehuman-

ization is the most dangerous and active

threat to humanity today.
Amnesty Internationals founder
Peter Benenson once said, It is better
to light a candle than to curse the darkness. We, as devout followers of
Amnesty, seek to shine a light on the
acts of injustice against Muslim Americans and individuals of other marginalized identities.
We as a society cannot remain silent
in the face of injustice. We cannot sit
idly by as our fellow Americans are
being targeted, attacked and persecuted
for their religious beliefs. Each and
every American must be held accountable for his or her actions and must
seek to make our country a more inclusive, respectful and compassionate nation welcoming to everyone.
We seek to use the Amnesty logo, a
candle wrapped in barbed wire, as a
symbol of hope to encourage each and
every resident of Claremont and student and faculty member of the Claremont University Consortium to stay
engaged in the fight against ignorance,
racism and Islamophobia. Do not let
the flame extinguish. As long as just
one person seeks to shine a light on injustice, the flame cannot and will never
vanish. As such, we demand the fair
and equal treatment of every MuslimAmerican both within and outside of
the Claremont community.
Every human being has the right to
feel safe and secure, and free from the

threat of violence because of their religion or identity.

We light a candle for every individual who has ever felt marginalized due
to their religion. We light a candle for
every victim of hate speech, threats of
violence and heinous acts of racism.
We light a candle for every individual who has had to question or feel
ashamed of their identity. We light a
candle for every individual who has felt
threatened or endangered by acts of
physical or emotional violence due to
their identities.
We light a candle for every person
who has been discriminated against
based on their race, color, gender, sexual orientation, religion or personal
identity.
To the Islamic Center of Claremont:
we, the students of the Amnesty International chapter of Claremont
McKenna College, support you. We
thank you for your courage to fight for
your rights as human beings. We are inspired by your strength, commitment,
and dedication to human rights and to
stand up in the face of injustice, discrimination and unspeakable threats of
violence.
Consider us your allies and know
that you are not alone. We will continue
to shine a light on the injustices occurring in our shared community.

Gabrielle Starr named president of Pomona College

abrielle Starr, a highly regarded

scholar of English literature
whose work reaches across neuroscience and the arts, has been selected
as the 10th president of Pomona College,
the college announced Thursday.
As dean of New York Universitys College of Arts
and Science, Ms. Starr leads NYU's 7,000-student undergraduate liberal arts college, oversees its $130 million budget and coordinates the undergraduate
experience across 55 departments and programs,
Pomona College shared in a press release. Ms. Starr
has led the development of new cohort and first-year
programs, helping to create scholarly communities for
undergraduates in the arts and sciences.
Her collegiate work began at the age of 15, when
she set off to study at Emory University before going
on to earn her PhD from Harvard University. She then
launched into a career combining science and the humanities, intensive research and campus leadership.
After earning her PhD in English and American literature from Harvard, Ms. Starr went on to a postdoctoral fellowship at Caltech and the Huntington
Library, at a time when cognitive neuroscience was
beginning to flourish. Delving into the science, she
began to look at imagination and the effects of the
arts from the perspective of that new field.
Shortly after she arrived at NYU in 2000, a New
Directions fellowship from the Mellon Foundation allowed her to pursue deeper study in neuroscience, and

her scholarly work has focused on its intersection

with aesthetics ever since.
Its a great honor to join Pomonas extraordinary
community of scholars and researchers, artists and activists, educators and entrepreneurs, Ms. Starr said.
The life of the mind speaks to a deep human need,
and we are truly fortunate to be able to pursue the true
breadth of human knowledge in a vibrant and open atmosphere.
I look forward to working together with you as we
let Pomonas light shine for another generation, and,
together, shape our world anew.
Appointed Thursday in a vote by the Pomona College Board of Trustees, Ms. Starr will succeed President David W. Oxtoby, who announced earlier this
year that he would be stepping down June 30, 2017
after what will be 14 years leading the college.
Ms. Starr will be the first woman and the first
African American president of Pomona College. Her
inclusive leadership style along with her distinguished
academic work connecting multiple disciplines epitomize key values of the college, said Sam Glick, chair
of the Pomona College Board of Trustees.
Gabi embodies the liberal arts, and will bring to
Pomonas presidency her characteristic intellect, vision and humanity, Mr. Glick said. Gabi is an extraordinary leader who will build on the legacy of
President Oxtoby and his predecessors as she helps us
to write the next chapter of our history.

Victor Tessier

11

OBITUARIES

Veteran, lawyer, historic preservationist

Victor Gerald Tessier, devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend to
many, died peacefully on November
27, 2016 at his home in Pomona at the
age of 89. He was comforted by his
bride of 51 years, Cathy, and surrounded by family.
Mr. Tessier was born in 1927 in Argyle, Minnesota to Eddie and Eleanor
Tessier. He was the eldest of nine children and grew up on the family farm.
In 1946, he left seminary school to
serve in the US Army. He became a
paratrooper and a decorated surgical
medic in the 187th Infantry
Regiment(the Rakkasans) of the101st
Airborne Division. He was stationed in
Japan during the postwar occupation,
rose to the rank of sergeant and ran a
field hospital. Victor felt his most important contribution to the cause of
peace was a successful effort to open a
medical clinic that treated thousands of
homeless Japanese civilians.
After an honorable discharge in
1949, Mr. Tessier graduated with a
bachelors degree from Long Beach
State University, graduated with a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Loyola Law
School and passed the California bar in
1955. He opened his legal practice in
Pomona and specialized in real estate
law. He was a member of the Los Angeles County Bar, the Eastern County
Bar and a 50-year member of the California State Bar.
In 1965, he met and married the love
of his life Catherine Uhl, a musician
and Riverside schoolteacher. They
moved to Claremont in 1973 where for
three decades they raised three childrentwo sons, Edward and Jerry, and
one perfect daughter, Victoria. They
were active members of Our Lady of
Assumption Catholic Church, and lovingly restored their 1908 craftsman
home on Indian Hill Boulevard.
The suffering Mr. Tessier witnessed
in Japan and during the Depression
moved him to become a quiet force behind many progressive causes. He donated extensively to pro bono work (he

proudly said he never charged a servant

of the cloth, no matter what religion).
He helped African-American ministers
who faced resistance when opening
churches in Pomona. He represented
homebuyers who challenged Pomonas
color line, a system of racial discrimination that barred many minorities
from buying homes north of Holt
Boulevard.
He filed the first environmental lawsuit against Pomona, saving dozens of
historic trees threatened by development, and helped protect family farms
threatened by suburban sprawl.
He defended members of the gay
community who faced discrimination
and harassment by public officials. He
also helped disability activists organize
several local civil rights campaigns.
To connect more disadvantaged
clients with legal assistance, Mr. Tessier
helped found two nonprofits: Legal Aid
Services and Lawyers Referral Service.
To help struggling families, he provided free adoption assistance and
helped found another nonprofit,
Pomona Valley Family Services. When

many businesses fled Pomona, Mr. and

Mrs. Tessier invested in its most disadvantaged neighborhoods. In south
Pomona, they rehabbed more than 200
abandoned apartments, developed
housing for Vietnamese refugees and
were founders of the Southwest Council, a coalition that improved public
services and housing for Latino and
Asian immigrants.
In downtown Pomona, they renovated dozens of abandoned buildings,
saving historic landmarks such as the
Union Block, the Clark Hotel and the
Progress Bulletin Building. The buildings they saved proved crucial to expanding Western University and
launching the Pomona Arts Colony, a
project spearheaded by their sons. The
development company started by Victor
and Cathy is now a leading force for
historic preservation and cultural development throughout the Inland Empire.
He was especially proud when the
company completed a lavish restoration
of the Pomona Fox Theater in 2009.
Mr. Tessier was a tireless volunteer
with many civic organizations such as
Pomona Central Business District,
Toastmasters, Junior Chamber of Commerce, Optimists Club, St. Vincent de
Paul Society, Knights of Columbus and
the Italian-Catholic Federation.
He gave generously to many organizations including the School of Arts
and Enterprise, Western University of
Health Sciences, Cal Poly Pomona,
Foothill Country Day School, dA Center for the Arts and the Latino Arts Mu-

seum. He lived to see many organizations honor his familys decades of

public service with the following
awards: The Boys and Girls Club,
Community Partner of the Year;
Pomona Chamber of Commerce, Community Service Award; Inland Valley
Economic Development Corporation,
twice Small Business of the Year;
Pomona Heritage, Hall of Fame Award
and the dA Center for the Arts Goddess
Award.
In 2002 Victor and Cathy moved
back to Pomona so he could retire, be
closer to his grandsons, enjoy his huge
science fiction library and restore another 1908 craftsman home. He was a
fixture at art openings, community theaters, garage sales and AYSO games.
We will miss his optimism, stories and
faith, his family shared.
Mr. Tessier is survived by his wife
Cathy; by his children, Edward, Jerry
and Victoria; by five grandsons, Victor,
Eddie, Alex, Leo and Julien, and by

Some Crust Bakery celebrates 100 years in Claremont

This 1940 photograph of Yale Avenue is currently on exhibit
at Some Crust Bakery. With the help of Joan Bunte and Paul
Wheeler, the Feemsters have amassed a collection of historical photographs in celebration of the bakerys 100th anniversary. The exhibit is open for anyone, so stop in for a
cookie and a cup of coffee and enjoy the retrospective.

alking into Some Crust is like walking into a time capsule. The old walls are full of stories of Claremonts
past and present, as the floor fills with people shuffling in to get their morning coffee and pastries. Many Claremonters are familiar with this city institution, and have grown up
along with it.
Ive got kids working for me now who used to come in as
toddlers, Larry Feemster, who bought the bakery in 1997, said.
Larry and his son Scott Feemster are the proprietors of the
bakery, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.
Part of the centennial celebration is an impressive collection
of old photographs from Claremonts historypictures of buildings that have come and gone and people who lived their lives
in the growing citrus town. The photographs were curated with
the help of Claremont stalwarts Joan Bunte and Paul Wheeler,
with a little help from the capacious Claremont COURIER photo
archives.
One of the photos stands out, a picture of a large tin structure
with horses gathered around it. According to Larry Feemster, it
is a photograph of the old Claremont Feed & Fuel, a staple of
early Claremont. Horses and carriages would pull up to the business and load up on supplies. It was sort of an early iteration of
the drive-thru. It stood where the Starbucks/Wells Fargo is today,
a testament to the ever-changing face of the Village.
Larry Feemster, who held an executive position at In-N-Out
before getting into the bakery business, marvels at how much
Claremont has changed over the years, from a quiet town to a
bustling destination.
In the old days, you can shoot a cannon across the street, and
you wouldnt hit a car, he joked.
But the essence of Some Crust has stayed the same, even if
hands have changed over the past century. By Larrys count,
there have been four different owners over the years before he
bought the business in 1997.
Since buying the bakery, the Feemsters have tried to keep
some of the old recipes, such as the mocha cookie and the blueberry cheese Danish, that made the bakery a local favorite when

Shoes to fill in Claremont

rowing up in Claremont, I have been

called lots. When I was a young architect in Claremont, some of my
proudest moments were when I was called
Frank after my great-grandfather, Frank
Wheeler.
I was called this by Stan Larson, owner and editor of
the Claremont COURIER. Frank Wheelers real estate and
insurance office was around the corner (west of the bike
shop) from the old College Press office, which also housed
the COURIER.
Stan noted that Frank Wheeler would come in and comment on who was doing what they shouldntaffairs?
insisting that it should be in the paper. Stan always said,
I couldnt print that! but he also said Frank always had
it right.
In his later years, Stan also mistakenly called me StuSOME CRUST/from previous page

ownership of the historic bakery, renaming it Some Crust in 1980.
Scott Feemster told a story about how
a member of a family who previously
owned the bakerythe Hodges
walked in a few years ago to reminisce.
The Hodges bought the bakery around
the start of World War II, Scott says, and
bought a massive oven as surplus from
Bracketts Field when the war was over.
The oven was so enormous, Scott
says, that a special room had to be attached to the back of the bakery to ac-

called Paul is an everyday event, as I was named after my
other grandfather, Paul Naftel. Other people have called
me Roger after my father, Roger Wheeler. It is both tough
and easy to walk in another mans shoes.
I moved into my parents house 10 years ago, which was
previously occupied (and built) by my grandfather and
grandmother Naftel with contractor Coldwell. When a family member vacated the house, furniture was left and even
Old Spice and English Leather aftershave was left behind
in the medicine cabinet; it was used by yours truly.
This takes me back to the notion of shoes to fill. My
father wore a size 11 shoe. When he moved to the Gardens, a bunch of his shoes were left behind. I still wear
them on occasion. My brothers recently gave me a heck
of a ribbing for wearing my dads old leather topsiders
loafers, but theres still some life left in them, and with pride
I wore them.
Here in California, a greeting when you see someone

After all these years, that oven is still
in use today, epitomizing Some Crusts
enduring legacy in Claremont. The
thing is, back then, they used to build
stuff to last, just like old cars and motorcycles, Scott said.
Employees tend to stick around, too.
Jack Housen has been with the bakery
for 28 years, getting hired first to make
dough and moving his way up to co-general manager. Katrina Murillo has been
decorating wedding cakes for the bakery
for 18 years. Its a sign of a strong business to have workers stay for a while.

Larry Feemster, purchased Some Crust
Bakery in 1997 after a
long career as an executive with In-N-Out
hamburgers. He says
he still helps out at the
bakery even though his
son Scott has taken
over running the business.

As for the future of the bakery, Scott

says the main goal is to continue making
good on the Village shops name.
Honestly just keeping on with what
we dojust basically try to refine and
get better at what we do, he said.
That mission is on the upswing, as Scott
mentioned that the bakery has two new
vans and a booming wedding cake business. At one point, Some Crust made cakes
for 40 weddings in a single weekend.
As the business grows, the message
stays the samemake good food and
push harder to be the best bakery they

can be.
When asked about Some Crusts
legacy in Claremont, Scott Feemster is
self-effacing, acknowledging the establishments history while also making a
point of not taking it for granted.
It definitely seems like we consider
the bakery to be an institution in Claremont, he said. I think everybody feels
that way.
The historical pictures will be on display until the end of December.

One win, one loss for girls basketball in tournament

Claremont High School girls basketball
never quite found their groove Tuesday
night, losing to Ribet Academy 58-38 in the
opening round of the annual Claremont
Tournament. However, on Wednesday
they turned the tables, destroying Bloomington Christian 66-10.
To be fair, both Claremont and Ribet had
their struggles. A full four minutes elapsed
before the Fighting Frogs landed the
games first basket, but they started looking pretty good after that and quickly
opened a 10-point gap.
The loss can be summed up in two unfortunate stats: The Pack had 16 turnovers
and scored just 16 field goals for 57 attempts.
Claremont has some clear talent, most
notably from dynamo Camille Troncone,
who had enough hustle for 10 of her rivals,
and Laurel Marchant, who was the most

HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP

GIRLS WATER POLO

The Pack has had a busy early season,
and it looks to be a promising year as the
girls have racked up five wins and just
two losses. On Wednesday they added
one to the win column by trouncing Arlington 19-9 at home.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Claremont won their season opener
against South Gate on Tuesday, 80 to 49.

Top performances include: Kyle Scalmanini with 17 points and six rebounds,
Tyler Fraser with 19 points and seven rebounds, Davis Haley 14 points and seven
rebounds and Tyler Risher with nine
points and seven rebounds.

BOYS SOCCER
Claremont lost their opening game 10 to Quartz Hill, the same team that
knocked them out of the CIF tournament
last year. Not to be deterred, the Pack
came back on Wednesday with a 1-0 win
over Ganesha at CHS.

Weve got to get on the same page, its

early in the season, but that is why we play
these tournament to gauge where we are,
he said.
On Wednesday, the Pack played much
better against Bloomington Christian.
The win came as a big surprise as the
Ravens had a 22-3 record last season, were
undefeated in league and made it to the CIF
semi-final game before losing to Faith Baptist 67-56. The Ravens lost their longtime
coach and possibly some key players,
which changed everything.
Marchant led the way with 18 points followed by Christina Carazo with 14, and
Gaby Watkins chipped in 10. Ella Nolte led
in rebounding with seven and four points
of her own.
Bloomington Christian is rebuilding but
has a very bright future in Coach Haley
White, who knows the game inside and out.
I look for them to really be good in a few
years, said Coach Kennedy.
The Claremont Tournament is in its 19th
year, with Coach Kennedy as head coach
for nine years. The tournament winds up
Friday with games in both the afternoon and
evening.

WEBB BASKETBALL

WEBB SCORES

Pasadena Poly beat Oakwood 62-59

to win their second straight Webb Invitational Basketball Tournament Championship on Sunday. Polys Jackson Pace
was named tourney MVP. The Webb
Schools placed fourth in the tournament,
losing to Sherman Indian, 62-47, on Saturday. Webbs top performance came
from Kia Nalbandi with 16 pointsfour
three-pointers and three rebounds. Kobe
White Eagle was Shermans top scorer
with 15 points.

It was a very successful first week of

the season for Webb winter sports teams.
Wrestling went 2-0 at a tri meet at de
Toledo; girls basketball is 2-0 after wins
over Marshall and Garey; girls soccer is
2-0 with wins over Ganesha and Pomona
Catholic; boys soccer went 3-0 with wins
over San Dimas, Mojave and Paraclete;
and, finally, girls water polo advanced to
the championship game of the gold division at the Claremont tournament.

NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER
ESTATE OF BRUCE FOSTER NICHOLES
aka BRUCE F. NICHOLES
Case No. 16STPB06314
To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors,
and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will
or estate, or both, of BRUCE FOSTER NICHOLES aka
BRUCE F. NICHOLES A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by Henry Foster Nicholes in the Superior Court of California, County of LOS ANGELES.
THE PETITION FOR PROBATE requests that Henry
Foster Nicholes be appointed as personal representative
to administer the estate of the decedent. THE PETITION
requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many
actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking
certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested
persons unless they have waived notice or consented to
the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files
an objection to the petition and shows good cause why
the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on
the petition will be held on Dec. 22, 2016 at 8:30 AM
in Dept. No. 79 located at 111 N. Hill St., Los Angeles,
CA 90012. IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before
the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your
attorney. IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent
creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with
the court and mail a copy to the personal representative
appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four
months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b)
of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the
date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice
under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your
rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of
an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250.
A Request for Special Notice form is available from the

disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address

publication of the Notice of Sale is: $ 787,610.15. If the Trustee
is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidders sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies

further recourse. The beneficiary of the Deed of Trust has executed and delivered to the undersigned a written request to commence foreclosure, and the undersigned caused a Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where
the real property is located. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien,
you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding
at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the

not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the
property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned
off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear
title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on

Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of
the street address or other common designation, if any,
shown above. The sale will be made, but without
covenant or warranty, expressed or implied, regarding
title, possession, or encumbrances, to pay the remaining principal sum of the note(s) secured by the Deed of

caused a Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be
recorded in the county where the real property is located.
NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are
considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a
trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the
property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear

ownership of the property. You should also be aware that

the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you
are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be
responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to
the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may
exist on this property by contacting the county recorders
office or a title insurance company, either of which may
charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same
lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust
on this property. NOTICE OF TRUSTEE'S SALE
Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid
less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time
of the sale the opening bid may be less than the total debt
NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date
shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or
more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a
court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee
sale postponements be made available to you and to the
public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If
you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date
for the sale of this property, you may call (866)-960-8299

to this case 2015-03541-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur
close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately
be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement
information is to attend the scheduled sale. Western Pro-
