Part I

Rogers.

Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis believed our personalities have

roots to our unconscious mind, all our ideas, thoughts and feeling we are not aware of.
According to Freud our personalities consist of three separate structures: the ID, the ego

and the superego. ID is the only structure present at birth and functions according to the
pleasure principle (obtain pleasure to avoid pain). The ego is the IDs link to the outside
world and operates on self and reality principle and control conscious ideas, thoughts and
feelings. The superegos function is to be a moral compass and aids in the normal
function within the environment. It was also Freuds belief is that if the superego rejects
impulses from the ego, anxiety occurs often leading to the use of defense mechanisms to
reduce the discomfort produced by anxiety. Freuds theories were mostly based on a
persons sexuality.

Carl Jung believed that personal unconscious and collective unconscious were the
two components of the unconscious. Personal unconscious contains repressed thoughts,
forgotten experiences and undeveloped ideas; while the collective unconscious contains
memories and behavior patterns from previous generations. Jung believed that libido
signified all life forces instead or Freuds belief that libido signified just sexual forces.
Jung also believes there were two attitude types among people, introverts and extroverts.
Introverts are concerned with personal feeling and issues while extraverts energy is
directed primarily outward, towards people and things outside of themselves. Therefore,
Extraverts tend to be more naturally active, expressive, social, and interested in many
things. Jung theories were mostly based on a personas spiritual and rational qualities.

Carl Rogers was another prominent psychologist, but unlike Freud Rogers
believed that people are good and healthy. Rogers also believed that peoples mental
health was just a matter of lifes circumstances and it progresses. The negative effect of

ones personality such as his or her mentality and criminal tendencies are merely
distortions in lifes progressions. Rogers believed in the actualizing tendency. The
actualizing tendency is ones desire for self-fulfillment. Rogers believed that a person
sees him or she in a certain form and tries to accomplish what he or she wants in life.
Rogers also believed that once person losses their inborn living potential they lose sight
of what they truly want and who they are.
