Its Christmas Eve... its the one night of the year when we
all act a little nicer... we smile a little easier... we cheer a little
more. For a couple of hours out of the whole year, we are
the people that we always hoped we would be!
ese words, spoken by Bill Murray in the movie Scrooged,
pretty much sum up how most people feel about Christmas
time. ey want their company parties. ey want their
caroling. ey want their peppermint mochas and snickerdoodles. ey want their Secret Santa gift exchanges. ey
want their gift receipts for easy return. ey want their day
after 50% sales. ey want their Christmas to be happy.
Jolly. Merry. And then it ends.
In some ways St. Mark is no dierent in regards to having a
good party. In fact, all readers of e PILOT, as well as all
residents of Redwood Shores, are invited to join the St. Mark
community at its Christmas Open House on Saturday,
December 10th after the 4:30pm Mass, (325 Marine View
Avenue, Belmont). It is the perfect opportunity to get to know
the people of the parish, the church itself and what it has to
oer. ere will be food, drink, entertainment and (of course)
merriment. e cost to attend is free, however, in the spirit of
giving, it is asked that a donation be made in the form of a
youth-appropriate gift card, to be given to those less fortunate.
But for the parish and its parishioners, Christmas never ends
because it goes much deeper than twinkling lights, hot
chocolate and popcorn balls. What is often overlooked by
society at large during Christmas time is Christmas itself.
For all the attention given to Santa and reindeer and Elves
on the Shelves, to Grinches, Red Ryder BB Guns and
Clarence Odbody, there is less attention paid to what
Christmas represents: giving, charity, mercy and grace.
Missed in the hustle and bustle of tree decorating, light
hanging and ugly sweater wearing, is that it truly can be a
time of peace on earth and good will toward men. Not just
for the two or three weeks leading up to a day on the
calendar, but continuously. Everyday. Ongoing and neverending. e true spirit of Christmas is that it is not a set
parameter of time, but a state of mind, action and being.
So we hope you will join the St. Mark community in a true
celebration of Christmas on Saturday, December 10 after
the 4:30pm Mass (325 Marine View Avenue, Belmont).
As all are welcome, please share this invitation with friends
and family outside of the Redwood Shores boundaries.

Twenty-one people entered the RSTCs last tournament of
the year on November 12th. As a gray dawn gave way to
sunny skies and pleasant temperatures, players gathered for
team tennis. Because the courts at Dolphin Park are
undergoing needed reconstruction, the Preserve courts (near
Redwood Shores Elementary School) were used instead;
Shorebird courts were available as usual.
Teams were named for comfort foods of the season: the
Cranberries, the Sweet Potatoes, the Squashes and the
Giblets. Giblets? Well, no one wants to play on a team
called the Turkeys! As usual, there was a lot of good-natured
competition along with generous doses of humor.
Octogenarians Phil Waters and Ed Lee initially cried No
fair! at having to play against younger partners. eir mock
griping changed to self-satisfied grins when they came back
from 0-3 to win the set 5-3.
Evelyn Sell had to default after the first round, feeling sick
with symptoms of stomach flu. en Karen Brodersen, who
with her husband Bob, was scheduled to host the social, called
to report the same symptoms. Fortunately, Sundar and Smita
Venkateswaran stepped in, so the social did not have to be
cancelled. Everyone brought favorite comfort foods, including
turkey with gravy, ham and biscuits and desserts featuring
pumpkin and persimmons.
e winning team was the Cranberries, captained by Kathy
Miles; her teammates were Evelyn Sell, Kristian Nergaard,
John Jordan, Sundar Venkateswaran and John Hogan. e
prizes this month were gift certificates to Zalles Racquet
Sports in Foster City.
Our next event will be the post-holiday party in January.
Well be back on the courts in March with the annual
Membership Mania event. Watch this space for details. In
the meantime, for schedules, information, or to join the
club, please visit www.rstc.org. Lets play tennis!
OH YUCK!
Moments
by Harvey Radin
It was not bad at all, bicycling along the Bay Trails one
morning last month. Im checking things o in my mind.
Wind conditions... favorable. Air temperature... just right.
Early morning fog... clearing. All in all, a great start to the day.
What do they call it? at inner voice in your mind that
sort of chronicles what youre doing in real time? at inner
voice people hear now and then, like during meetings, for
example, when theyre thinking about the best things to say.
As Im cruising along a levee trail, my inner voice is
switched on. Im thinking the foliage is transitioning from
Summer to Fall, but theres also lots of lush, green grass
from drenching October rain. eres a jackrabbit that will
probably scurry o as I approach, but doesnt, surprisingly.
eres a huge, grey bird on an embankment across the
water looking intensely into the lagoon. Probably for
something to munch on. Its unfazed as I go by.
en, Im recalling from recent bike rides where I may need
to zigzag. Trying to remember where Ive seen stu on the
trail that I may need to dodge. Maybe puddles from recent
rain. Or poop where geese paused long enough to leave
substantial deposits. Rolling over puddles and poop,
especially on mountain bike tires with their knobby tread,
sure kicks up what youre rolling over. On your legs or
elsewhere. So, you think about that for a moment.
And when you spot something deposited by something
other than birds, you think maybe someone walking their
dog might have missed that moment when the dog stopped
in the middle of the trail when nature called. Or maybe
someone ran out of poop bags. Your inner voice says: Hey!
Cut the person some slack! But then again, slipping and
sliding over something that'll cause an OH YUCK! moment
can make you think again. And you hope that others on the
trail will zigzag in the nick of time...
