Brief Description
This will be a written test at the end
of the unit. It will cover all the
material within the unit related to
the GLOs and SLOs. This will be
graded for marks based on the
outcomes. Students will have a
chance to reassess if needed (Oral
assessment, retesting students)
There will be two topic quizzes
throughout the unit. They will be a
written test. The first Topic Quiz will
cover topics 1 & 2. The second Topic
Quiz will cover topics 3, 4 & 5. The
other Topics will be assessed using
labs, projects, or formative
questions. This will be graded for
marks based on the outcomes.
Students will have a chance to
reassess if needed (alternate
assignment, retest, oral exam).
Every Monday, students will be
working on a project for the full
morning (3 hours). During this
project time they will research
traditional structures, build an angry
bird tower to withstand forces & the
environment, and create a moving
structure with joints/materials. One
will be formatively assessed, and
two will be summatively assessed.
My formative assessment will guide
students in how to follow a rubric
and how to write a reflection based
on the project. This will guide them
into how to do their summative
project the next week and they will
have feedback to help them know
where to go with learning. A
majority of the grade for the
projects will be based on a reflection

in groups or partners. This will
assess AS learning. For the projects,
students will be also be given a
rubric when marked being assessed
and they will be given a checklist to
ensure they have met all the
criteria. The checklist will be a
formative assessment that is
handed in with rest of the
assignment so students can selfassess how they are doing. I will
provide feedback to students
throughout the process to make
sure they are on track and I can
ensure success.
Students will measure forces,
examine forces, construct a stable
structure from unstable materials,
and build a solid foundation. After
doing the labs, students will reflect
and answer questions to hand in
regarding the lab and in two cases,
write a lab report. I will give
formative feedback on the stable
structures, measuring force, and
firm foundation labs, and have the
examining forces lab as a
summative mark based on the
criteria I give them (rubric). Two of
the labs (strength and stability and
constructing a stable structure) will
be done as a class together because
they are lecture-based and I will
give feedback on questions based
on the lab, plus observations and
discussion we have during class. I
will have alternate activities and
work to do if the summative lab
report doesnt go well. (Redo,
alternate assignment).

At the end of each topic, students


will be given an assignment/review
booklet with questions directly
related to the outcomes. They will
take this home as homework or
extra work to do during class. I will
take these questions in once a week
and formatively assess where
students are at and if I need to
cover material again. I will give
feedback to students so they
understand what they need to learn.
I will take in the review/assignment
at the end of the second last week
so students can have feedback to
study for the final exam.
These questions will be very
outcome based so student will know
what they need to study for quizzes
and the final exam.
This will be either in the form of
discussion or written questions,
depending on the difficulty of the
topic. They will be selected from the
pervious class to assess what they
learned (if assessing at the start of
class). I will also pre-assess each
topic to see what students already
know. I will use this to guide my
instruction and see what students
know or need to improve on. They
will be based on the outcomes and
the essential questions.
Some days, I may do end of class
assessment to guide my teaching so
I understand what students take
from each lesson.
This assessment will be in the form
of my first discussion with the class
at the beginning of the unit. For
their first day (project day), students
will be constructing a bridge and

The order of the topics was taken from Science Focus 7
Topic 1: Types of Structures. Students will learn about types of structures, how to
classify structures, and the pros and cons to each structure type. (K1.1, K1.4, K1.5)

(e.g., identify examples of frame structures, such as goal posts and girder
bridges, examples of shell structures, such as canoes and car roofs, and
examples of frame-and-shell structures, such as houses and apartment
buildings)

things and structures created by animals (e.g., skeletons, exoskeletons,
trees, birds nests)
