Lesson Plan: Numbers and Operations

Jasmin Arellano-Mota
September 23, 2014
Grade:3
Objective/ Standard:

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.NBT.A.2
Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and
algorithms based on place value, properties of operations,
and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.NBT.A.3
Multiply one-digit whole numbers

Learning Outcomes:
The students will be able to solve word problems focusing on addition,
subtractions, multiplication and simple fractions.
Materials:

Activity handouts 20 copies on desk

White board
White board markers- on desk drawer
Pencils- students have their own on student desk
Computer- 10 computers
2 students per computer

Procedures:

Begin the lesson by asking students to think about how time and
money are used in their daily lives. Students may suggest the
following:
1. How much money they need to save to buy a new toy.
2. The times school starts and ends.
3. Amount of time they spend doing homework every day.
Explain to students that math is involve every time they figure out how
much time or money they have spent or need.
Students will apply the math skills they already know (addition,
subtraction, multiplication and fractious) to solve word problems.

Write the following problems on board:

1. Your teacher told you to buy a notebook, a ruler, a pencil and an eraser
for math class. The notebook costs $3.00, the ruler costs $1.50, the
pencil costs $0.25 and the eraser costs $.40. What is the total amount
of money you need to buy these items?
-Go thought the following steps with the students to solve the problem:
-To find out how much money you need, add the following:
$3.00
$1.50
$0.20
+$0.40
______
$5.10
-

You would need $5.10 to buy the supplies.

Make sure the students comprehend how the problem was solved.
Ask the students how they would solve the problem if the teacher
asked them to get three pencils and three erasers. Explain that when
they hear the word each, they know that they will likely have to
multiply.
- To find out how much money you begin by multiplying the following:
$0.20x3=$0.60
$0.40x3=$1.20
2. Jimmys neighbors ask him to rake their leaves. They offered to pay
him $5 and hour.
How many hours must he work to earn $20.00?
-To solve the problem, suggests that students set up the following
equation:
$5 x number of hours+$20
-Set up a table to help illustrate how Jimmy earns money for each hour
worked
No. of hours
1
2
3
4

Money earned
$5.00
$10.00
$15.00
$20.00

-The students will see that $5x4=$20

- Make sure at this point the students comprehend the word problem
- Answer any students question.
- If the students need another word problem. Make sure to give the
following problem;

3. There are eight dogwood trees currently in the park. Park workers had
to cut down
Seven dogwood trees that were damaged. How many dogwood trees will be
in the park when the workers are finished ?
- read out loud the problem and let the student highlight the information
given
-set up an equation to solve the problem
- 8 dogwood trees seven dogwood trees = 1 dog tree
8-7=1

Hand out the addition word problems worksheet to every student.

Go over the first problem with the students.
- In a school there are 458 boys and 524 girl. Find the number of
students in a school.
- In order to solve the problem we must add 458+524= 982
- Let the students work on the rest of the assignment and help out with
any questions.

Technology Resources:

Have students pair up and visit

http://www.mathplayground.com/calculator_chaos.html website where
they will have the opportunity to practice their coomon core math
standards in operations.

Student Assessment/Reflections:

Can the students identify the word problems.

Can students correctly solve the word problems.
Review any handouts you had students fill out. You will want to check
out not only their work, but also if they are setting the equation
correctly.

Extensions: Send home copies of the Addition word problems to practice more at

home.
*20 Copies on Desk

Closure:

Discuss how this can apply to daily life. Such when we go buy stuff or
how much time we spend time on doing homework or practicing and
instrument.
