Hey Everyone,

It is important for us to learn about the human body system. Its not always the job of a
doctor to figure out what sickness is in your body. We can have that knowledge so we can tell the
doctor whats wrong with us, which can help the doctor find a treatment to the solutions. This
writing piece provides a discussion about one of the human body systems. There are five main
body systems, but the system that I will be focusing on is the respiratory system.
Before getting into characteristics of the topic, we must first discuss the definition of the
respiratory system. According to Zimmermann (2016), the human respiratory system is defined
as a series of organs that are responsible for taking in oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide.
The main organ responsible for this process are the lungs. According to WebMD (n.d.), the
lungs are a pair of spongy, air-filled organs located on either side of the chest. The nine main
parts of the lungs are the pharynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, nasal cavity, Epiglottis,
larynx and the diaphragm (Simon, 2014, p. 262).
The primary function of the respiratory system is to exchange gases (Simon, 2014).This
means oxygen from the air enters our body through inhalation (Simon, 2014, p. 263). With the
help of the circulatory system, oxygen is transported from the lungs to all the body cells. After
this process is completed, carbon dioxide is transported from the body cells to the lungs. When
the carbon dioxide reaches your lungs, it is released from the organ through the process called
exhalation (Simon, 2014).
Even though the respiratory system plays a vital role in the human organ system, there are
many viruses that can cause that system to not perform at its best. The two common viruses that
is common in this system are bronchitis and asthma. Bronchitis is caused by infections in the
bronchioles. Symptoms associated with bronchitis are persistent cough and mucus production

(Simon, 2014, p. 263). Another virus that is caused by in the respiratory system is Asthma. This
virus is a long-term inflammation of the airway (Simon, 2014, p. 263).
In conclusion, the respiratory system is proven to be one the most essential organ systems
in the human body. Without it, we will not be able to breathe. To me I feel that the respiratory
system is the most important system, but if all the respiratory systems are not functioning
properly, we wont be able to perform well. With that being said, I learnt a lot on the systems and
look forward to our final discussion next week.
