CHAPTER IV

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

4.1 Research
From the results of experiments to determine whether the potential banana skin as the
battery was correct, that it has the potential banana skin becomes dry batteries are
environmentally friendly. Experiments conducted by the author can prove that banana peel
battery made by the authors to generate electricity.
The results showed that the average voltage produced by a dry battery of Ambon banana
peel is 1.1 volts, the average banana Kepok generated voltage is 0.9 volts, and the average milk
banana generated voltage is 1 , 24 volts.
Construction of a banana skin dry battery together with a normal battery. The difference is in the
electrolyte. Banana peel contains several minerals that can serve as the electrolyte. Minerals in
the highest number is potassium or potassium (K +). Banana peel also contains salt containing
sodium chloride (Cl) in small amounts. The reaction between potassium or potassium and
sodium salts can form potassium chloride or KCl.
According to Drs. Asep Jamal (2008) KCl is a strong electrolyte capable of ionized and
conduct electricity. Bananas also contains Magnesium and Zinc. Magnesium (Mg) can react with
the electrolyte dichloride and become stronger. Total Magnesium is only 15% of the overall
number of bananas. Bananas also contain zinc (Zn) which is a positive electrode. Zinc content in
bananas number only reached 2%. So that the minerals that were most responsible for delivering
electricity is potassium or potassium, which reacts with the sodium salt. Magnesium and zinc
salts is possible also played a role in delivering and storing simple electric current.
The results also showed that control battery can last more than 7 days while the banana
peel battery only less than 6 days. This is due to control battery has a compound that serves as
depolarization. The compounds used are mangandioksida. Although bananas also contain
manganese, but the number was only 0.6 mg per 100 g. Besides, every reaction in the battery to a
process of polarization due to the hydrogen gas is released. Banana and especially the banana
skin contains more than 60% moisture content (H20), which can be released in case of a
chemical reaction. So the possibility of very large polarization. This is resulting in the difference
between the resistance of banana skin batteries and battery control large enough. Meanwhile,

among the three types of bananas, the banana milk has the highest resistance. However, because
of the difference between the resistance of banana banana milk and other types of less than 24
hours, it can be said that the resistance between the three types of bananas do not give a
significant difference.
The net weight of the battery showed that the average banana peel which is used by 3.3
grams per battery. While the banana peel intact average of 27 grams per one piece. So that one
piece of banana skin is able to serve approximately 8 batteries.
The chemical reaction that occurs on a banana peel battery as follows:
Cathode :

2H+ + 2

Anode :

Zn
2H+ + Zn

H2
Zn2+ + 2
H2 + Zn2+

Based on the study, average stress - average generated by the battery of a banana skin is 1:24
volts. It has been tested in a flashlight, can survive for 5 days 6 hours. Minerals found in most of the
largest banana skin Potassium (K +). Banana peel also contains salt soddium containing Chloride (Cl) in
small amounts. The reaction between Potassium and Sodium salts can form a salt Potassium Chloride
(KCl), which became the electrolyte in the battery with a banana peel paste.
