BUDGET 2016

Congratulations! As a grade 7 student at Lasalle Public you have been selected by the Canadian
Government (Mr. Vickers) to take part in a very special project. The government is looking for
information about student's understanding of money and it's value. As part of this study you will be
required to move out from your parents home and survive for one month. The government has
allocated you $2000 for you to live on. As part of this study you are required to submit several detailed
reports and spreadsheets. The government requires all of this information before giving you the money
to survive on. If you do not complete the forms the government will not allow you to even attempt to
live on your own or give you any funding.
How this project works:
- You are to assume that you come to school on a Monday morning and you are given the ok to start the
project and you are given a cheque for $2000
-You only have the clothes on your back and your backpack
-You have no technology with you (meaning you left your phone or ipod at home)
-You may work with a partner- however you are to complete the project as if you are one person
(you don't get $4000 because you have a partner)
-You will have a minimum of 10 in class periods to work on this (you can earn up to 4 more periods
for yourself or group based on your work ethic, time management and planning). The periods will
either fall during Language or Math.
-There will be about 2 periods of in class instruction from Mr. Vickers on what to consider, different
ideas and even how to use Office 365 (specifically Excel).
- This will be worked on @ random times until the final day
-Some days it might be 1 period and others might be 2- it depends on the availability of technology and
how far we have gotten in Danny King of the Basement
-Using your own technology is recommended but not required as I will have iPads booked as much as
possible
-You will be given 1 folder per group to keep everything organized
-You will be given 1 planning sheet (for time management). This is very important as Mr. Vickers will
only be helping you if this is filled out and you are working on what you have planned to do. This
means that if you had planned to work on your food plan that day but are asking questions about rent
and electricity costs he will not answer you. You need to keep your mind focused on the specific task
you must complete and not jump all over the place.
-You will be given 1 planning circle ( everything you need to consider)
-You will be given 1 Food Planning sheet
-You will be given 1 copy of the Rubric and Success Criteria
-You will be given 1 copy of the final evaluation sheet that you must complete
-You will need to ask your parent(s) or an adult about things once in a while
- You will have access to examples of budgets created by previous students Mr. Vickers' has taught.
Remember that they had slightly different requirements and expectations.( I slightly modify the
assignment every time my class reads Danny King of the Basement and the students may have been in
different grades)

Specific things to consider

- in order to cash a cheque you must have a bank account ( you need to research about how you would
do this and what bank you would choose)
-you must rent a place to live within Windsor or Lasalle
-you must find out what school will you will be attending ( you cannot attend random schools or even
attend Lasalle if you don't live in the area.
-you must have a form of transportation- a bike or a bus pass (assume that the weather is ok and you
can ride your bike)
-you cannot live a boring life thus you must have some form of entertainment at least once a week
(movie/ laser tag, mini golf, etc...)
-when you rent a place to live most don't come with dishes
-you will need to purchase things like towels, wash cloths, toothpaste, tin foil etc...
- when you purchase food remember you don't have things like butter , ketchup, salt etc..
-you must have the internet
- you must purchase at least a weeks worth of clothing (you only have 1 days worth)
-you must keep in mind how you are going to wash the clothes (do you go to a laundry mat? Do they
have laundry in the place you rent?
-How far do you live from things? You can't live too far from things and if you do you would have to
get a bus pass instead of a bike. Also how far is it to places- if you want to go to the mall yet you lived
by the river would you ride your bike?
What the government (Mr. Vickers) needs from you:
1) A detailed expense report (Done on Excel through office 365)
2) A 1 week meal plan ( must be specific)
3) A 1 month grocery plan ( this can be done by multiplying your week plan or actually creating a 1
month plan)
4) Graphs showing your expenses placed into categories
5) A clothing plan for the month
6) PROOF for everything!
1) A Detailed Expense Report
-you must provide the exact expense for everything that you need
-we will make a list of all the things you will need in class but this should include things like rent, bus
pass, internet, etc...
-must be completed on Excel or a program of your choice ( you will be shown formulas and how to use
Excel but if there is a program you prefer go ahead and use it)
2) A 1 week grocery plan
-you must produce a meal by meal plan of everything you will be eating for an entire week.
-you must also create a spreadsheet that represents the total cost of food purchased for that week. This
must be incredibly detailed and must provide exact cost ( banana's are $0.57/ pound and you will
consume 3 banana's which is about 1.5 pounds thus you will have to spend rougly $0.75 on bananas)
-You will need lots of help with this section especially when trying to figure out how much of
something you need or how many meals something will cover- this is where you get to ask Mr. Vickers
(he's kinda an expert on these things Food Basics, Coke and Pepsi- thus he has been in every grocery
store from Chatham-Sarnia-Windsor) or Check with your parents

3) A 1 month grocery plan

-you are required to plan out the amount of food and items you will need to purchase for an entire
month. ( You can simply multiply your 1 week plan by 4 and add 3 days but then you are eating the
same thing all the time)
- a list and cost is required
4) Graphs showing your expenses placed into categories
-you will learn how to create graphs using in Excel
-you must put your items into categories ( Food, Utilities, Entertainment etc...)
5) A clothing plan for a month
- because you only have the clothes on your back from the day you receive the ok to start this project
you must price out clothing and provide a plan for what you need to purchase and what you will wear.
Remember you wouldn't want to wear the same clothes to school every day.
6) Proof for everything
-you must provide proof of cost for everything
-this means you must go on the internet to find information and print off the proof
-you can use flyers cut out and organized
- you can use costs that your parents provide you ( This is important for the cost of Utilities- especially
if where you are living requires you to pay them.) HINT- where you will be living is probably small
when compared to where you live now.
7) You Parent(s)/Grand Parent(s)/Aunt/Uncle/ Older Brother or Sister are going to be very helpful. You
will need to ask them questions about the bills that they have to pay. They are definitely allowed to help
you with this project. I don't want them to do the project for you but they are an awesome resource.
