Conduction
Conduction: The transfer of energy from the more energetic
particles of a substance to the adjacent less energetic ones
as a result of interactions between the particles.
In gases and liquids, conduction is due to the collisions and
diffusion of the molecules during their random motion.

Conduction
Heat is conducted in the direction of decreasing temperature,
and the temperature gradient becomes negative when
temperature decreases with increasing x. The negative sign in
the equation ensures that heat transfer in the positive x
direction is a positive quantity.

A coordinate system is used to indicate direction with plus or
minus signs.
Three prime coordinate systems:
rectangular T(x, y, z, t)
cylindrical T(r, , z, t)
spherical T(r, , , t).

Heat Generation
Heat Generation : medium through which heat is conducted and
involves the conversion of electrical, nuclear, or chemical energy
into heat (or thermal) energy.
Examples:
electrical energy being converted to heat at a rate of I2R,
fuel elements of nuclear reactors,
exothermic chemical reactions.

Heat Generation
When the variation of heat generation with position is known, the
total rate of heat generation in a medium of volume V can be
