Reflection Week 6

Freda Pu
1. Overview
My students in Tiger Pride consists of 20 students who are in 4 th & 5th grade.
The lesson focus for this week was Badminton. My lessons covered modified
badminton game and practicing badminton forehand and backhand returns.
Equipment and facilities used included: badminton rackets, poly spots,
birdies, cones, and the blacktop court. Previously learned skills from the
students include forehand and underhand serve (Wills lesson).
2. Student Learning Outcomes
My student learning outcomes and objectives were for the students to be able
to successfully execute the COTS for badminton with 70% accuracy and 50%
MVPA. Data showed that my MVPA was only 700 seconds which is kind of low.
This could be attributed to the students having nothing to do and just
standing with the racket when the other partner is retrieving the birdie from
far away. I think an idea that could have a big impact on MVPA is to maybe
have one partner do jumping jacks when the other partner is retrieving the
birdie. That way there is an incentive to get the birdie faster and theyll be
moving around more instead of just standing and hitting the birdies back and
forth to each other.
3. Creating a Quality Learning Environment
I think I successfully addressed the 4 criteria of a learning experience this
week. For the backhand and forehand returns students have a chance to
improve their skills and accuracy. They could also step further or closer away
from each other to adjust for difference in skill levels. For the most part the
students were engaged in the activity. I did not have to spend too much time
giving instructions because the structure of the lesson was familiar and has
worked in the past.
4. Strengths & Weaknesses in Pedagogical skill set
During my teaching episode I usually moved around to check on students in
small groups. I reviewed the COTS at the beginning and end of class and
asked for student demonstrations. The I call a student up and he/she
demonstrations the skill reciting the COTS out loud as the rest of the class
observes. Despite moving around to each group I didnt really give enough
positive feedback. I noticed I dont usually give direct feedback to the whole
class because I think they wont all hear me. I also tend to use the word you
guys a lot. The students returned and collected all the equipment at the end
of the lesson but sometimes it takes some coaxing for them to stop playing
with the equipment beforehand. 3 teaching skills I did well in was using the
count down method to get students to quiet down or do a task, student
organization for the activity, and walking around during the lesson. 3 things I

need to work on are having a better attention grabber, not to turn my back
on the class as a whole, and giving more feedback during the activity.

5. Recommendations for next session

Strategies to improve on weaknesses could be to work on more

attention grabber techniques. The countdown technique works
something but if I use it too many times during a lesson I feel like it the
students start to not take it as seriously. Based on the achivements this
week, next week will be a new unit with new COTS to learn and
practice. Ill need to come up with lesson plans that could promote
more MVPA.
