Procedures
1. Instructor will greet students and ask them, nicely, to sit up in their chairs with proper
posture.
a. Prompt: Good afternoon! How is everyone today? Great! Can everyone wit up in
their chairs with proper playing posture for me? Thank you!
2. Students and the instructor will discuss Dvoraks New World Symphony
a. Question: How many of you have heard of Dvoraks New World Symphony?
i. Today we will be learning the theme from the largo movement
3. Students will keep a steady beat while the instructor models the theme (with dynamics)
through singing solfage
a. Prompt: Lets keep a steady beat and listen as I sing the theme in solfage.
b. Question: What did you notice the theme doing?
4. Instructor will introduce the concept of dynamics, particularly two measure swells
a. Question: Did you notice any dynamics? Did the theme seem to swell back and
forth?
5. Students will keep a steady beat and learn the theme through singing solfage, in quick
two measure phrases
a. Prompt: Lets get a steady beat going and learn this song together!
6. Students will continue to learn the song by adding the phrases together (with swells)
a. Prompt: lets add a few of the phrases together
7. Students will keep a steady beat while the instructor models the song again, but this time
on the euphonium (with swells)
a. Prompt: Im going to model the theme once more, this time on my instrument.
8. Students will keep a steady beat and learn the theme again, but this time on their
instruments (with swells)
a. Prompt: Lets go through this theme once more, this time with our instruments.
9. Students will continue to learn the theme in short two measure phrases added together
a. Prompt: Lets put this all together with instruments.

10. Students will be able to accurately perform Theme from New World Symphony
without the aid of the instructor
Closure/Review
At the end of the lesson, I will have the students play the theme all the way through
without me. During this time, I will walk around, listening to my students playing. Afterwards, I
will make quick comments, and if time allows, I will have them play through it again. At the end,
I will conclude for congratulating my students for learning the piece and thanking them for their
time.
