THEORY :
Impact value of an aggregate is the percentage loss of weight of particles
passing 2.36 mm sieve by the application of load by means of 15 blows of
standard hammer and drop , under specified teat condition . The aggregate
impact value gives a relative measure of the resistance of an aggregate to
sudden shock or impact , which in some aggregates differs from their
resistance to a slowly applied compressive load.
OBJECTIVE :
To determine the aggregate impact value in the laboratory.
APPARATUS :

Figure 1 AGGREGATE IMPACT VALUE MACHINE

DATE

Impact testing machine :

It consists of a cylindrical hammer of 13.5 kg ( 30 Ibs) sliding freely
between two vertical supports (called guides ) . Its fall is automatically
adjusted to a height of 38 cm . There is a brass plate over which an
open cylindrical steel

cup of internal diameter 10.2 cm and 5 cm

depth is placed and fixed to the brass plate.

Measure :
A cylinder of internal diameter 7.5 cm and 5 cm deep for measuring
aggregate .

Tamping rod of 1 cm diameterand 23 cm long rounded at one end and

pointed at the other end.

Sieves : 12.5 mm , 10 mm and 2.36 mm openings.

Balance : 5000 g capacity.

Laboratory oven capable of maintaining a constant temperature up to

1100C .

SAFETY PRECAUTION :
1. No eating or drinking in the lab.
2. Keep flame and flammable solutions far apart.
3. Keep electrical equipment far from water.
4. Use proper safety protection --- fume hood, goggles, gloves.
5. All sharps (needles ) should be discarded in a sturdy container.
6. Be Prepared .
7. Learn how the professionals learn about safety
8. As the hammer is heavy , be careful to keep away from the falling weight.
PROCEDURE :
1. Sieve the aggregate and obtain the portion passing 12.5 mm and
retained on 10-mm sieve.
2. Wash and dry this aggregate at a constant temperature of 105 0 to
1100C ; and then cool the sample.

3. Fill this aggregate in the cylindrical measure in 3 layers ,tapping each

layer 25 times with the tamping rod. Level the surface tamping rod as
a using the straight edge.
4. Weigh the aggregate in the measure. This weight of the aggregate is
used for the duplicate test on the same material.
5. Transfer the aggregate from the cylindrical measure to the cup in 3
layers and compact each layer by tamping in 25 strokes with the
tamping rod.
6. Release the hammer to fall freely on the aggregate. The test sample is
subjected to a total of 15 blows.
7. Remove the aggregate sample from the cup and sieve through 2.36
mm sieve.
8. Weigh the fraction passing the sieve.

Calculation :
Percent Wear ( % ) = Weight loss
Initial Weight

x 100

The results obtained show they are put below the requirement of 15%
accordance with JKR standard , and are therefore suitable to be used in road
construction.

Questions :
1. State your group discussion and conclusion on data-data you achieve.
2. Two sets of aggregates passing sieve 14 mm and retained on 10 mm
sieve weighed on an electronic balance . Set A weight 630 g and set B
weighed 614 g . The weights retained on sieve size 2.36 after the
impact test were 627 g and 603 g respectively for sets A and B .
calculate the Aggregate Impact Value (AIV ).
3. What is meant by toughness of the aggregates?
4. How does toughness differ from compressive strength?
5. What are uses of determining impact value?
6. Should a good quality road aggregate give higher impact value?
