Renewable Energy
In the power generation plan, emphasis has been given for the development of renewable energy
resources. According to Renewable Energy Policy 5% of total generation would come from renewable
energy by the year 2015 and 10% by 2020. Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority
(SREDA) has been established under SREDA Act, 2012.
Achievement:
IDCOL and BREB are distributing Solar Home System (SHS) to the people living in the off-grid
areas. IDCOL through different partner organization has already distributed about 36 lakhs SHS and
BREB distributed about 15 thousand SHS throughout the country.
650 KW Renewable energy based pilot project in remote Haor areas at Sunamgonj.
500 KW Solar system atf Thanchi Sader Upozilla and its adjoining areas.
760KW grid wind-solar hybrid with Diesel based engine generator in Hatiya Island.

The Energy Efficiency Master Plan up to 2030 has been prepared by SREDA with the
assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) which is approved in 2016. The
Master Plan estimates a total energy saving of 5.3 Mtoe/year, worth of approx. BDT 100 billion/year
between 2015-2030. The Government has set the following targets in the Master Plan for energy
saving:
Saving 15% per GDP energy consumption by 2021.
Saving 20% per GDP energy consumption by 2030.
The main components of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Master Plan up to 2030 are:
1. Energy management program for large industries.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
Energy Efficiency and Conservation Promotion Financing Project has been initiated to
promote EE&C measure and to facilitate installation of EE&C equipment.
Energy Star Rating of 4 appliances (CFL buld, ballast, electric fan and refrigerator) has been made
and Energy Star Rating of 2 appliances (Air Conditioner and Induction motor) is under way.
Energy efficiency and renewable energy related topics been incorporated in the curricula of
academic institutes.
Significant number of waste heat recovery and cogeneration projects has been implemented.
Energy audit has been conducted in 20 garment industries. 43 energy auditors have been
created by a training program.
Country Action Plan for Improved Cook Stove has been prepared to disseminate it around the
country. Around 1.8 million improved cook stoves distributed so far and 30 million inefficient
traditional cook stoves are targeted to be be replaced by ICS by 2030;
Dissemination of Improved Rice Parboiling System (IRPS) in Rice Husking Mills has been
introduced. Around 65 IRPS have been installed so far.
Replacement of conventional street lights by LED or solar lights in a gradual manner have been
initiated.
Gradual replacement of inefficient Brick Kiln to efficient Brick Kiln (Zig-zag or Hybrid
Hoffman) is going on.
Switch off Schooling Program has been designed to promote awareness for energy saving;
Organizing seminar and workshop on it in regular basis to create awareness among relevant
stakeholders.
Print, electronic and social medias have been using for mass awareness raising about energy
efficiency and conservation
Some of the priority energy efficiency measures will be undertaken as given below:
Replacement of 30 million inefficient traditional cook stoves by ICS with in the year 2030;
Ongoing Projects
Development of Sustainable Renewable Energy Power Generation (SREPGEN) Project
