general feeling within the community is that past school leadership
seemed to have"their head in the sand in regard to the twenty-first
century." A recent editorial in the local newspaper states, in part:
The principal, who you replaced, is quite bitter e fact he was not
appreciated for maintaining a school while confusion, conflict, and
criticism, abounded. He stated, "They did not understand the y
problems I faced from hiring teachers to maintaining accountability."
The teachers seem to be fed ith the lack of respect they receive and
concerned ut the inability to envision the kind of school the munity and
state were demanding. Since the salaries of members of the
community had significantly outpaced those of educators, in a
professional association survey they ranked"salary" as their number
one concern. Safety and discipline was also high on their list. Family
life within the community had deteriorated and tension within the
school was on the in crease. The students were quite high-tech and
picked up on the community concems about the relevance of their
school experience.
Administrators and educators at our local middle school seem to
ignore all federal and state initiatives as well as twenty-first century
thinking, as they maintain steadfast loyalty to an outmoded system of
education. This status quo thinking has kept our schools and our
children from making the kind of progress that is now needed. The
time has come for our educators to wake up to the society they serve
and to bring our schools into the twenty-first century. The new
principal at Scrivner Middle School must change the persistent and

misguided belief that the school can continue to operate as it did in the
1980s with no signs of progress. The principal will need to gain a
better understanding of what is needed for our community. state, and
