Final Reflection
Globalization is defined as the process of interaction and integration between different
nations that is driven by trade and investment. This is done so through information technology by
which through the years have advanced quite rapidly. Globalization began when the Europeans
first landed in the Americas and introduced new technologies to the indigenous people living
there. At first, the indigenous people of Hispania welcomed the Europeans and taught them how
to survive the land. Once the explorers came, they introduced more than technologies such as
disease and death. The explorers took advantage of the natives due to their lack of globalization
around the world. This is especially seen today in casinos on Indian reservations of the Apaches.
Globalization has greatly impacted these Native American tribes due to the povertystricken areas. The poor economy has driven these tribes to adapt to globalization in order to
survive on the reservations. Before exploration disrupted the society of the Natives, they lived
peacefully without the burden of other nations. They would move with the land and would utilize
it the way they needed to. Once the United States placed the native tribes on reservations, they
were confined to a smaller plot of land, but was not forced to abide by many of the laws that the
United States have due to Indian sovereignty. The law that allows Indians to own casinos on their
reservation is the Indian Gambling Regulatory Act of 1988. Because of this type of globalization,
the Apache were forced to adapt to the changing times.

The Apache viewed globalization as a last resort because of the late date of the Act listed
above. They did not want to change from their traditional ways to incorporate globalization into
their economy. Also, they changed their clothing from a traditional style of native American
clothes to a more western style that included jeans, t-shirts, and flannel. The society before was
completely traditional in the way that the outside world did not affect the individual tribes. The
only globalization that occurred within tribal groups from other Indian Nations occured during
tribal wars, trading, and merging of nations.
Today this still takes place, but as powwows which was globalization in itself. The word
powwow means he dreams, but the European settlers thought it meant to have a conversation.
The Natives adopted this new meaning of the word and began to use it to describe their meetings
in the 1800s about the ghost dance. Although this is nothing new, powwows were never a thing
before this time. This new concept of natives all coming together for a common cause was
revolutionary because many different tribes from all over the United States came. Today they are
still in existence providing a place for dance competition, prayer, and a conversation about
different situations around the United States.
In conclusion, globalization has greatly impacted the way Native Americans approach
their lives in the United States. From the clothes they wear, the jobs they work, and the way they
meet is a result of globalization. The Apache society has been altered to be able to survive in the
world.
