TOPIC: “A study of Academic Stress among Students
Studying in Govt and Private Schools of Samba
District.”
A. INTRODUCTION:
Modem age is said to be the age of tension, frustration, anxiety,
depression, stress etc. stress has negative effect on the physical, mental, social
and educational aspects of life of an individual.
Stress is an anxiety or distress caused by any pressure or tension. Itis-an
increasing of modern symptoms, associated with social pressures which impose
a variety of duties an obligation'on the individual:
Stress has different aspect like academic stress, financial stress,
educational stress, emotional stress etc. like other aspects of academic stress
greatly influence and affects the adjustment of an individual. No two individual
are exactly alike. Some posses high academic stress while other have low
academic stress. Some are well adjusted while some are maladjusted.77
It would be worth while to notthat stress is quniversal phenomenon
affecting people across the globe. It affects people of all age groups, young
children, adolescents, middle aged people, and elderly people. Life would be
simple indeed if one is biological and psychological needs were automatically
gratified. But as we know, there are many obstacles, both environmental and
personal, that may interfere. Such obstacles place adjective demands or stress
on the individual.
B. CONCEPT OF STRESS
Stress is the ‘Wear and tear our minds and bodies experience as we
attempt to cope with our continually changing environment. It is the automatic
‘fight or flight’ response in the body activated by Adrenaline and other hormones
which stimulates a variety of psychological changes. It is a kind of heavy mental
pressure which constantly give rise to a sense of such a peculiar uneasiness that
the individual wants to rid himself of this at the earliest, but he is not able to do
so.
In Psychology the term stress been used in two different ways. First it is
defined as a state of Psychological upset or disequilibrium in an individual. In the
2" case, stress is regarded as a class of stimuli which threaten an individual in
same way and thus causes disturbance in his behaviour stress may be of two
types.78
(i) Positive (ii) Negative
Positive stress is not harmful where as negative Stress is injurious to the
mental health of the individual. There are four components of Stress.
(i) Frustration,
(i) ~— Conflicts
(iii) Pressure
(iv) Anxiety
Academic Stress:- Academic Stress is a stress when the expectations for the
academic performance increases. Many students make adjustment, experiences
set backs when they have to perform more independently or the times for the
academic stress.
C. NEED OF THE PROBLEM
No doubt, man has progressed tremendously and has been able to
accomplish his desires but in this race of advancement, has fallen into the
clutches of many ailments, some of which are of his own creation. The parents
and teacher has always high expectation and high degree of level of aspiration.
They always expect that all children should achieve and show high academic
performance. By this type of attitudes children remain in stress and specifically
they are in academic stress. Keeping this in view, investigator has under taken
the research problem related to academic stress.79
D. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Keeping in view the above facts, the investigator has selected the following
problem for the present research work.
“A study of academic stress among students in government and private school of
Samba district”
E DEFINITION OF THE TERMS USED
The following definition has been laid down:
4. Stress: the words “stress” is used in psychology in at least two
different ways. First it is defined as a state of psychological upset of
disequilibrium in human being caused by frustration, conflicts and other internal
as well as external strain and pressure, What to do? How to do? Where to go?
‘Such a question depicts the state of stress under which one is expected to act or
behave, in a more serious conditions of the stress, the individual reaches a point
where physical process is confine and emotional state is chaotic.
In the second case, stress is regarded as a class of stimuli which threaten
an individual in some way and thus cause disturbance in his behaviour, stress is
conceptualized, i.e. frustration, conflicts, pressure and anxiety.
2. Academic Stress:- In the present study, by academic stress, it is
meant that ‘it is a stress when the expectation for the academic performance
increase, many students make adjustment experience set back when they have
to perform more independently or the time for the academic stress80
3. Sex: In the present study, sex includes 9" class boys and girls
studying in different type of school.

4. Different type of schools
Government Schools:- The school or an educational institution which
is run by the education department of the state government is know as
Govt. school such types of school provide free education to the
students.
Private Schools: The school or an education institution which is run
by an individual or by a body or a trust is known as Private School. In
these schools, students have to pay fee for their education.
Objective of the study
1) To find out the significant difference between Government school
boys and private school boys when academic stress is taken as
dependent variable.
2) To find out the significant differences between Government school
girls and private school girls when academic stress is taken as
dependents variable.
3) To find out significant differences between government school boys
and Government school girls when academic stress is taken as a
dependent variable.
4) To find out significant differences between private school boys and
private school girls when academic stress is taken as a dependent
variable.81
5) To find out significant differences between Government school
boys and private school girls when academic stress is taken as a
dependent variable.
6) To find out the significant differences between the Government
school girls and private school boys when academic stress is taken
as a dependent variable.
