Education requirements vary depending on the IT specialty. While some IT
specialists work their way up with professional certifications, most experts
begin their careers with an information technology degree at the associate or
bachelor level.
Advantages: IT certifications are useful for building specialist expertise and
staying up to date on the latest advances in a specific area of information
technology. Mean annual salaries for information technology specialists
ranged from $70,000 to $80,000 in 2009. Job outlook is excellent for IT
specialist positions; network analysts, for example, can expect 53 percent
job growth, making this the fastest-growing occupation in the U.S.

General career Path
Because computers have become such an integral part of everyday life, IT
careers have become more common. Computer programmers, support
specialists and systems analysts are just a few typical information
technology careers. Programmers are the translators who convert software
developers' designs into codes that computers understand. Support
specialists are the ambassadors who help ordinary people when they
encounter problems with their computers. Systems analysts work with
businesses to ensure that the companies' computers and networks are
working efficiently.
Education
IT jobs such as programmers and analysts, usually require at least a
bachelor's degree in computer science or a related area, but sometimes an
associate's degree will suffice. Experience is always a plus, too, and can be
gained through school as well as on the job. Not all computer support
specialist jobs require extensive postsecondary education or a degree,
according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). You may find that different
companies look for a bachelor's or associate's degree, while others value
experience and computer skills enough to land you the job.

Graduate engineering programs have been dominated by foreign nationals

for decades. Nearly two-thirds of all computer-science graduate students and
over 70% of all electrical-engineering graduate students in the U.S. are from
other countries, according to Stuart Anderson, author of a recent report on
the subject for the National Foundation for American Policy.

Sebastian Thrun, the CEO of Udacity, which is partnering with Georgia Tech
as well as AT&T to create the program, said the large number of U.S.
applicants highlighted a demand among adult students. "There is a really
huge number of people in this country that would love to get an education
while having a job or raising a family or staying at home," Mr. Thrun said.

Mr. Galil said he hopes to expand the Georgia Tech model to 10,000 students.
The school hires an additional teacher for every 60 or so students to
facilitate online chat discussions.

Every applicant with a four-year college degree who graduated with at least
a 3.0 will be accepted, but that acceptance is conditional on making at least
a B in the first two courses. The residential program accepts fewer than one
in five applicants -- but Mr. Galil said qualified applicants are turned away.

Average Salary

IT careers are expected to increase in demand as individuals and companies

continue to use computers more and more. In the 10 year period between
2010 and 2020, programmer jobs are expected to increase 28.8 percent and
systems analysts and support specialists will grow by 43.1 percent.
Considering those three IT careers alone employed over 350,000 in 2010, the
projected growth means an abundance of jobs for computer-savvy job
seekers.
It pays to pursue information technology careers. The median annual salary
for computer support specialists is $48,900, although if you choose to
specialize in network support that average goes up by over $10,000 per year
to $59,090, according to the BLS. Programmers and systems analysts fare a
little better at $74,280 and $79,680, respectively.
Career Outlook
"Don't just buy a new video game -- make one," Obama urges in a video he
recorded on behalf of the campaign. "Don't just download the latest app -help design it. Don't just play on your phone -- program. No one's born a
computer scientist, but with a little hard work -- and some math and science
-- just about anyone can become one."

By late Tuesday, about 6 million students in 167 countries had taken a

tutorial, said Hadi Partovi of Code.org, a nonprofit organization he founded
with his brother, Ali, to encourage computer science in education. Of the

participating students, about two-thirds were from the United States, Partovi
said.
Both Apple and Microsoft are hosting "Hour of Code" sessions at each of their
retail stores across the country.
Computers have helped revolutionize the commercial world and transformed
the lives of the general public through the development of the Internet and
mobile technologies like the iPhone. But, practically speaking, they have
done little for the good of our planet. This troubled Carla Gomes, a computer
science professor at Cornell University, and led her to embark on an effort to
develop computational methods that can help cultivate a more sustainable
world. Gomes and an interdisciplinary team of programmers, theorists,
applied mathematicians, economists, biologists and environmental scientists
have helped create a new field, computational sustainability, addressing
challenges that computer scientists have not traditionally handled. Together,
they tackle a range of issues from wildlife management to povertyreduction....Using these tools, the team has gone on to solve pressing
ecological and economic problems, from protecting endangered animals to
helping poor rural herders in Africa, showing the benefit that computing can
bring to real-world problems. This article discusses how computer science
professor Carla Gomes and her team developed computing methods to help
environmental sustainability.
