PHED 239 Module 4: High School

Modified Games Project

50 points
Due: Monday, November 14th
The purpose of this project is for you to design and compile a portfolio with modified
games you can use in various units within a specific category. Traditional full-sided
sports such as 11 v 11 soccer can limit participation and practice opportunities (OTRs
opportunities to respond). In addition, often students at the high school level do not
possess the skills or knowledge necessary to be successful in full-sided games.
Designing games that change the field, rules, equipment, size of teams, etc., can be
beneficial to all!
The goal is to design games that will foster motor skills and movement patterns; support
students understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics; teach
responsible personal and social behaviors; promote physical activity, enjoyment, and
challenge (National Standards).
You will randomly select one (1) category from Dr. Manganos list (Target Games,
Striking Games, Racket Sports: Net & Wall Games, or Territorial/Invasion Games). Your
task is to design five (5) modified games that would be taught in these specific units (no
more than 2 games from the same sport). The class size is twenty (20) high school
students.
Each of you will share your portfolio with classmates via Google Docs after it is
graded and corrections are made. Thus, once completed, you will each have modified
games for a variety of different sports!
CONTENT REQUIREMENTS/TEMPLATE: Each game must include the following
information Name of sport and game (you can make-up a name)
Number of players per team (total number of students = 20) and how the teams
will be selected (i.e. preselected by teacher, skill level, etc.) - use different
method for each game
Identify the position(s)/player(s) in each game
Facility area needed for activity (indoor gym/outdoor field, specific dimensions
of playing surface)
Equipment and materials needed detail quantity and specifics (i.e. 12 trainer
volleyballs, etc.)
Indicate at least 2 specific foci/outcomes for each game (i.e. skill development,
tactics, strategies, teamwork)
Rules and regulations list all necessary rules to play the game including how
game starts/ends, turnovers, scoring, fouls, points, etc.
Safety tip necessary to play game 1 different per game

Diagram(s) set up each game (be specific on dimensions, lines, cones, etc.)
using computer graphics
Extension (easier and more difficult) at least one (1) extension up and one (1)
extension down per game (i.e. award 1 point to the defense if they steal the
ball)
Reference(s) Internet, professional texts and journals - APA format at least
one (1) per game
