The CLINCHER Model CMS4000 Dual String CHROMEMASTER is now available with the NEW LOCKJAW Back-up, making it lighter
and more maneuverable. Automatic doors on the LOCKJAW Back-up allow faster and easier placement of the unit on the tube
with less operator fatigue. One operator can now mount the unit and close doors from operators valve section.
Adding to the ease of operation is versatility of the CMS4000 die system. Configured in the patented 3 spline die system,
CLINCHER now offers 3 types of dies to fit differing tubular compositions ranging from fiberglass, and chrome to carbon steel.
Use our new GRIT FACE or Aluminum dies for either fiberglass, or chrome tubulars, and steel dies for carbon steel tubing. The
3 die system in the tong and LOCKJAW Back-up allows full utilization of the primary tongs torque potential and self alignment
with up to 320 degrees of coverage. Adding CLINCHER's unique and patented independent hydraulic system gives the operator
full control over radial load.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
Superior Manufacturing and Hydraulics is committed to providing our customers with high
performance, state of the art equipment. Since your last order, we have made several
improvements to the design of our products.
Two improvements have been included in our CLE5500-15B 5 1/2" UHT Severe Service Tong.
These internal changes are not externally visible, but will increase the already rugged nature of
our tools and reduce maintenance. This tong now utilizes a very high strength, corrosion
resistant Severe Service Dumb Bell Roller Bushing ( p/n 55191) instead of ball/roller bearings.
Severe Service Cam Followers (p/n SSCF16250) are now being used instead of previously used
needle style cam followers. These improvements are illustrated in the attached drawings and
identified in the enclosed parts lists. These improvements have been incorporated at no charge
to our customer because they dramatically improve operating performance while reducing
maintenance requirements and maintenance costs in severe applications such as high torque
drillpipe.
We have also provided enhancements to our CMS4000-01 Dual String CHROMEMASTER and
BUCS4500 Backup. We have provided a two speed motor upgrade in the CMS4000-01 at no
cost to KST. In our BUCS4500 LOCKJAW Backup, we have eliminated the need for a series of
Belleville washers under the inside door wedge to simplify operation and maintenance. These
changes are documented in the attached parts list.
We have also developed a new style die system for use in the BUCS4500 LOCKJAW Backup to
enable this tool to release more readily if oversized tubulars are encounter. This new die series
BUCS4500XXXX is very similar to the older BUC4500XXXX series except that it features
flattened corners. For your convenience, we have processed the order documentation using the
description BUC4500XXXX but we are actually supplying BUCS4500XXXX dies.
Please insure copies of these updates are included with all Technical Manuals so your field
personnel will have the latest information. These changes will be incorporated into the next
edition of the affected CLINCHER Technical Manuals.

Operating Instructions
for
CLINCHER CHROMEMASTER
CAUTION: DO NOT operate cylinders on CLINCHER BACKUP or CLINCHER
CHROMEMASTER without installing proper sized dies or without installing tubing in unit.
DESCRIPTION: The CLINCHER CHROMEMASTER system can be added to all
CLINCHER Tongs as well as most competitive tongs to allow the use of smooth, nonmarking, nonpenetrating dies to run CRA ( corrosion resistant stainless steel alloy) or fiberglass tubing
strings. These smooth dies are manufactured from aluminum to prevent marking and to avoid
contaminating CRA tubing strings with materials which could initiate corrosion problems. The
CHROMEMASTER will also accept fine tooth dies for applications where conventional
steel tubulars are being run.
The CHROMEMASTER has three wrap around dies which provide up to 340 degrees of
pipe
coverage. These dies are hydraulically activated by means of a system which transfers hydraulic
power from the stationary section of the tong to the rotating section of the
CHROMEMASTER. This completely eliminates the need to connect and disconnect hoses
every time a joint is made up or broken out.
This transfer of hydraulic energy is accomplished by means of a Push Cylinder which is fixed to
the stationary portion of the tong and operated by the CHROMEMASTER Directional
Control Valve (refer to figures 1 & 2 to identify this valve). The Push Cylinder's Rod acts against
a Pump
Plunger located on the rotating section. of the CHROMEMASTER. Every time the rod is
extended the pump is stroked to generate pressure within the CHROMEMASTER's
hydraulic circuit. The piston
areas in the Push Cylinder and the Pump are sized to cause pressures to be intensified within the
CHROMEMASTER to 4,500 psi when the hydraulic power unit pressure is limited to 3,000
psi.
SPECIFICATIONS:
The torque capability of CLINCHER CHROMEMASTER, when dressed with fine tooth
dies, matches the rating of its companion tong. Ratings for CLINCHER TONGS are provided
tabulated below:

The torque capacity of the smooth CHROMEMASTER die is a function of the radial load
applied to
the die and the coefficient of friction of the contact interface between the die and the tubing.
Extremely small differences in this contact interface caused by pipe varnish, mill scale,
eccentricity or presence of a lubricant such as thread dope, oil or water can cause a large
variance in the torque capacity of a non-marking die.
In extreme high torque applications it may be necessary to install silicon carbide paper between
aluminum dies and tubing in the CHROMEMASTER as well as in the CLINCHER
BACKUP. One piece is required for each aluminum jaw. Sheets should be folded along one edge
to allow it to be hooked over edge of dies. Note on CMS 4000 the sheets should have a hole
punched to
allow them to be installed over the retaining pin located in the jaw. The sheets of silicon carbide
paper should be visually inspected after each joint and replaced when torn or worn.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
1. Refer to Tong Operating Manual to insure Hydraulic Power Unit is properly rigged up for level
operation. Insure load cell and torque gage are properly filled with fluid. Check hydraulic
connections to tong and backup assembly. Set Power Unit's pressure relief valve to 2,500 psi
for normal applications. Note this'setting can be increased to a maximum of 3,000 psi for
applications requiring high makeup or breakout torques.
2. IMPORT ANT NOTE: Insure CHROMEMASTER Push Cylinder Rod is fully retracted. The
Push Cylinder is located on bottom sides of CLE 4500 or equivalent 4 " tong, CLES 5500,
CLE 5500 or equivalent 5 " tong & CLE 7625 or equivalent 7 5/8" tongs and on top side of
the CMS 4000 Dual String 3 " Tong. Refer to step 11 for retraction instructions. Failure to
retract rod before rotating will result in severe equipment damage
Rotate CHROMEMASTER to align arrows on Tong and CHROMEMASTER Head by
manipulating tong directional control valve (refer to figures I & 2 to identify this valve).
IMPORTANT NOTE: These items must be aligned to insure proper operation and to avoid
severe equipment damage when the CHROMEMASTER Push Cylinder is extended.
3. Pull up CHROMEMASTER Latch Handle to unlock CHROMEMASTER Swing Jaws.
Note on CMS
CHROMEMASTER Operating Manual
Page 2 - 2
4000 tools the CHROMEMASTER is inverted so the Latch Handle must be pulled down.
Spread both jaws to their maximum open position. Open Tong Door to its fully open position.
4. Insure both Backup Cylinders (a.k.a. front jaws) are fully retracted by manipulating backup
directional control valve (refer to figure 1 & 2 to identify this valve).
5. Adjust height of tong and backup assembly to straddle tubing coupling by manipulating lift
cylinder directional control valve (refer to figure 1 & 2 to identify this valve).
6. Swing tong and backup assembly with CHROMEMASTER onto pipe.
7. Close CHROMEMASTER Swing Jaws and insure CHROMEMASTER Latch Handle
drops down into its fully engaged position. Note on CMS 4000 tools the
CHROMEMASTER is inverted so the Latch Handle must move up to latch.
Close Tong Door. Note: The Tong Door incorporates an interlock system which prevents the
hydraulic system from developing significant pressure if the Tong Door is in the open position.
CAUTION: Severe personnel hazards and equipment damage will result if the interlock system
is deactivated and the tong is operated.
8. Close both valves located on the CHROMEMASTER Head. Note on CMS 4000 there is only
one valve to be closed.
9. Close the Backup Jaws by manipulating backup directional control valve (refer to figure 1 &
2 to identify this valve). Monitor Backup Pressure Gage to insure pressure is at a minimum of
2,500 psi. Note: Applications requiring extremely high torque for makeup/breakout may
require higher pressures. Do not exceed 3,000 psi maximum operating pressure.
In extreme high torque applications it may be necessary to install silicon carbide paper between
aluminum dies and tubing in the CLINCHER BACKUP .One piece is required for each
aluminum jaw. Sheets should be folded along one edge to allow it to be hooked over edge of
dies. Note on CMS 4000 the sheets should have a hole punched to allow them to be installed
over the retaining pin located in the jaw. The sheets of silicon carbide paper should be visually
inspected after each joint and replaced when torn or worn.
10. Insure proper alignment of CHROMEMASTER and tong. IMPORT ANT NOTE: Severe
equipment damage will result if the CHROMEMASTER Push Cylinder is actuated which
incorrectly aligned.
11. Insure both valves ( only one valve on the CMS 4000) on the CHROMEMASTER Head are
in the closed and block position.
For applications using CLE 4500 or equivalent 4 " tong, CLES 5500, CLE 5500 or equivalent
Page 2 - 3
5 " tong & CLE 7625 or equivalent 7 5/8" tongs: Activate CHROMEMASTER to grip
pipe by manipulating CHROMEMASTER directional control valve (refer to figure 1 to
identify this valve). Operating this valve causes the CHROMEMASTER Push Cylinder
Rod (located on the bottom side of the tong) to operate the CHROMEMASTER Pump
(located opposite the. Push Cylinder) which pressurizes the CHROMEMASTER hydraulic
system. Pushing the handle away from the operator will extend the Push Cylinder Rod, pulling
the handle toward the operator will retract the Push Cylinder Rod. Repeat these operations as
many times as required to reach the desired operating pressure range of 4,200 to 4,500 psi.
Note: a pressure reducing valve is located near the Push Cylinder may require adjustment to
insure proper operating pressures are achieved.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Insure last action taken fully retracts Push Cylinder Rod. Failure to
retract rod will result in severe equipment damage.
Note for CMS 4000, it is necessary to use two valves simultaneously to operate the
CHROMEMASTER refer to figure 2 to identify these valves). Push the Backup Directional
Control valve away from the operator and hold. Next, activate the CHROMEMASTER by
manipulating CHROMEMASTER directional control valve (refer to figure -to identify this
valve). Operating this valve causes the CHROMEMASTER Push Cylinder Rod (located on
the top side of the CMS 4000 tong) to operate the CHROMEMASTER Pump (located
opposite the Push Cylinder) which pressurizes the CHROMEMASTER hydraulic system.
Pushing the handle away from the operator will extend the Push Cylinder Rod, pulling. the
handle toward the operator will retract the Push Cylinder Rod. Repeat these operations as many
times as required (normally 3 to 5 times) to reach the desired operating pressure range of
4,200 to 4,500 psi. Note: a pressure reducing valve is located near the Push Cylinder may
require adjustment to insure proper operating pressures are achieved. IMPORTANT NOTE:
Insure last action taken fully retracts Push Cylinder Rod. Failure to retract rod will result in
severe equipment damage.
In extreme high torque applications it may be necessary to install silicon carbide paper between
aluminum dies and tubing in the CHROMEMASTER. One piece is required for each
aluminum jaw. Sheets should be folded along one edge to allow it to be hooked over edge of
dies. Note on CMS 4000 the sheets should have a hole punched to allow them to be installed
over the retaining pin located in the jaw. The sheets of silicon carbide paper should be visually
inspected after each joint and replaced when tom or worn.
12. Select tong gear required (CMS 4000 tongs have only one gear) and rotate tong to
makeup/breakout tubular joint as required by manipulating tong directional control valve (refer
to figures to identify this valve). Refer to Tong Operating Manual for additional information.
13. Release tong directional control valve after reaching desired makeup torque or breaking out
joint.
14. Disengage CHROMEMASTER Jaw by opening either one of the two valves (one valve for
CMS
4000) located on the CHROMEMASTER Head. These two valves operate in a parallel
circuit and are provided for the convenience of the operator. Insure the spring loaded Jaw

MAINTENANCE
CLINCHER recommends that owners of CLINCHER Hydraulic Power Tongs, Backups,
CHROMEMASTERs and accessories adapt a regularly scheduled maintenance program.
Implementation of this type of program offers several benefits. Firstly, you increase the life of your
equipment, secondly, you may find a problem before it escalates to a costly repair or down time on
the job, and most importantly, prevent injury to operating personnel.
A major inspection (described at the end of this section) should be carried out if equipment is
suspected to have been damaged during transit or is to be mobilized to a remote location where
maintenance operations are difficult to carry out.
ROUTINE MAINTENANCE
2 -1
Cleaning
a) Upon returning from every job, thoroughly clean unit using petroleum based cleaning agent. The
hydraulic motor assembly and top tong plate should be removed for internal cleaning periodically and
to allow visual inspection of rollers, gears, and cam followers.
2 -2
Inspection
a) Inspect overall unit, including hoses, valve assembly, motor housing, and power unit for signs of
leakage or obvious damage.
b) Inspect brake bands for breakage and excessive wear. If during inspection of brake bands it is noted
the wear has started to wear into the rivets, it is time to replace brake bands.
c) Inspect dies for excessive wear .Visually inspect dies for imbedded dirt, mud, scale, etc. and clean
with a wire brush to allow full penetration of die tooth. If tooth is worn and no longer sharp to
the touch, replace dies.
d) Inspect jaws for visible damage, checking to assure top and bottom die retainer clips are secure.
Inspect jaw roller pin and jaw roller for excessive wear, making sure the jaw roller pin is straight,
the jaw roller is free of cracks or flat spots and the rollers turn freely.
2 -3
Lubrication
a) Cam followers. Apply grease to the cam followers via zerts on top and bottom cage plates and
top and bottom tong plates.
b) Dumbbell roller shafts. Apply grease to the dumbbell roller shafts via zerts on top and bottom of
shafts.
c) Door shaft. Apply grease to the door shaft via zerts in top and bottom of shaft.
d) Center idler gear shaft. Apply grease to the center idler gear shaft via zert in bottom of shaft.
Page 7 - 1
e) Outboard idler gear shafts. Apply grease to the outboard idler shafts via zerts on top of shafts.
f) Pinion gear and secondary gear assemblies are installed with sealed bearings. There is no
provisions to grease these bearings. However, if replaced by non-sealed bearings, the 1/8" N.P.T. flush
plugs should be replaced with zerts PN 100 I and both gear assemblies should be added to the regular
lubrication schedule.
g) Low gear housing, shift housing. Apply grease to low gear housing and shift housing via zerts (2
each). Apply ample grease to housing to insure housing is fully packed with grease.
h) Tong body. There are two methods for packing grease into tong body cavity .When tong is
disassembled with top tong plate removed, clean, inspect and replace worn or damaged parts, then pack
by hand entire tong cavity with grease. With tong assembled and top tong plate in place, rotate throat
to expose gears and hand pack tong body with grease.
2 -4
2 -4
Adjustments -At the beginning of each job and start of each shift thereafter, you should test
brake bands and adjust as necessary .
Testing
a) Place backing pin in make-up position.
b) Operate tong several cycles, and verify heads bite at each cycle.
c) Place backing pin in break-out position.
d) Operate tong several cycles, and verify heads bite at each cycle.
e) If heads fail to bite either in make-up or break-out, adjust brake bands.

Check Test Date. Ensure that a load test and Inspection was carried out within the last 9 months.
Check Rotor. Check rotor for any signs of damage or wear (as per service manual).
Remove Motor and Hydraulic Valve Assembly Remove the motor and Hydraulic valve assembly
from the tong body.
Check Motor Seal. Apply hydraulic power, run the motor and visually check the motor seal for any
signs of leakage.
Check Motor Gear .Check the integrity of the motor gear retaining ring. Check for excessive signs
of wear on the motor gear.
7 Check condition of spools. Activate valves and check for any signs of wear pitting or scoring of the
chrome on the spool assemblies.
NOTE: If the spool is damaged in any way, the complete section must be changed out as spools
are not interchangeable.
8
Check Gear Selector and Shaft. Remove clutch door and visually inspect the shifting shaft for
alignment and straightness. Check that the shifting shaft yoke is secured at the bottom of the
shaft by means of a lock nut.
Check Clutch Assembly. Visually inspect high and low clutch and gears for any sign
chipped, broken or worn teeth.
10 Check Dumbbell Rollers, Shafts and Bushing. Check for excess movement on either bearings,
bushes, dumbbells or shafts.
Page 7 - 4
11 Check Idler Gears and Center Pinion Shaft Gears and Bearings. Check that there are no signs of
worn, chipped or broken teeth on the idler and center pinion shaft gears.
12 Check Door Bearings. Visually check excess movement on bearings at the door assembly. If excess
movement is found the door must be removed making careful note of bearing shims positions
for reassembly.
13 Check Door Spring Housing. Visually check that the door latch spring has sufficient strength to
snap close the tong door. If this is not the case, then the door stop must be removed and a new
spring fitted.
14 Check Door Safety Device. Functionally check the tong door safety switch. Engage low gear, open
tong door and push rotor control lever forward as if to rotate rotor, if safety device is
operational then the rotor will not rotate. Ensure over ride valve (if installed) is wired in the
open position.
15 Check Lifting Bridle and Test date. Check the lifting bridle and shackles for damage or wear.
Ensure that a load test and Inspection was carried out within the last 9 months.
16 Check condition of all hydraulic hose. Visually inspect all hydraulic hoses fitted to the tong
and in the back-up for any signs of leaks, cuts or wear.
17 Remove CHROMEMASTER Doors, Paint Strip, MPI (MAGNETIC PARTICLE
INSPECTION) (magnetic particle inspection). Pull pins out of the CHROMEMASTER
doors after releasing grub screws. Paint Strip Doors overnight by placing in paint strip solution.
Doors should then be cleaned and checked before submitting them for MPI (MAGNETIC
PARTICLE INSPECTION) testing where all cracks should be noted on the service sheet.
Replace doors using grease on
pins and ensure securing devices are fitted to the hinge pins.
18 Check CHROMEMASTER Cam bolts are secure. Ensure that the bolts that secure the cam
lugs on the CHROMEMASTER are tight. These can be reached from inside the bore of the
tool.
19 Check CLINCHER Die retaining lugs-on CHROMEMASTER and CLINCHER. Check
the condition of the bottom lugs on the CLINCHER Backup -these are welded in place and
buffed flush and should
show no signs of damage or cracking. The chrome-master door bottom lugs should be checked
during the MPI (MAGNETIC PARTICLE INSPECTION) of these items. Ensure all the top
lugs are present with bolts -ensure they are not bent and that the threads are clean, free, and
greased.
20 Check CHROMEMASTER bottom plate bolts are secure. Check that the bottom plate bolts
on the CHROMEMASTER are tight and that there is no sign of movement of the bottom
plate relative to the top plate as these bolts hold the CHROMEMASTER together.
21 Check CHROMEMASTER Oil Level. Remove the filling/level plug from the side of the
Page 7 - 5
reservoir and fill with hydraulic oil unit level with the plug.
22 Remove CLINCHER side plates, Steam clean Tong and Backup. Remove bolts securing
CLINCHER side plates and remove the side plates. Put assembly through the steam cleaning
process ensuring all foreign material is removed but taking care not to remove lubrication from
the tong and CLINCHER cylinders.
23 Check condition of all hoses on the CLINCHER. Check all hoses inside and on the
CLINCHER body for signs of leakage or damage. Replace any hoses or fitting that are not
satisfactory.
24 Remove CLINCHER Ram retaining bolts and check for cracks. Remove the bolts at the back
of the CLINCHER hydraulic rams ( 4 off total) and check. They should be free from
damage, cracks and bends. Replace with grease and ensuring they are secure and sufficient
threads engage into the nuts.
25 Function Test Tong ensuring turns counter works. Operate the tong and record the maximum
torques in both high and low gears. Ensure turns counter (if installed) registers correct number
of turns per revolution.
26 Check Front and Rear Legs for Clearance. Fit Torque Gauge to backup. Connect tong to hydraulic
power supply. Position suitable pup-joint in tong and backup and with maximum torque
applied in both directions, visually check that there is sufficient clearance between the front
and rear legs of the tong and the back-up to prevent a false torque reading. Check that the tong
and backup are correctly aligned with full torque applied and check that the break out bar fitted
is the proper length and does not give false torque readings. The number of the tong should be
stamped on
the break out bar.
27 Check CHROMEMASTER Ram pressure set to 2,500 psi. Pressurize CHROMEMASTER
head WITH jaws and pipe to grip. Ensure pressure limiting valve is set to restrict the maximum
pressure available to 2,500 psi.
28 Check Backup Pressure Control Valve. Adjust pressure control valve fully Anti-clockwise, then
whilst fully depressing the back-up spool handle, adjust the pressure control valve clockwise to
increase pressure up to 2,000 psi on the back-up gauge, then readjust pressure back down to
1,200 psi. Remove the pressure and then reapply ensuring only 1,300 psi is applied and that the
pressure is held.
29 Check Lift Cylinder valve. Connect a lift cylinder to the power tong. If the load valve is
operating properly, the tong should rise smoothly and there should be no sudden movements.
When lift cylinder is half its stroke the tong the tong should be left suspended fro 2 minutes;
the lift cylinder should not be seen to extend during this period.
30 Check for Hydraulic Leaks. Once the hydraulic oil has reached a temperature of
approximately 40C, operate the back-up retract or the lift cylinder whilst visually checking all
Page 7 - 6
components for oil leaks, i.e. spool valve assemblies, hose, connections and rams in back-up.
31 Check Case Drain Oil Flow Rate. Stall the power tong motor at 2000 psi with a flow meter
in the case drain line. Measure the volume of oil flowing from the case drain. The flow must
not exceed 18 liters per minute.
32 Grease Tong, Backup and CHROMEMASTER. Grease all grease points on the power tong as
per service manual.
33 Paint Tong, Backup and CHROMEMASTER. Mask off all Hydraulic sliding surfaces, all
thread forms, all bearing surfaces and all Gauges. Paint tong.
34 Store Tong, Backup and CHROMEMASTER. Store tong in Serviced Equipment Area.

PRODUCT BULLETIN
SUBJECT:
DATE:
January 8, 1998
BULLETIN NO.:
SPB98-01-01
REFERENCE:
A problem was recently encountered with a CHROMEMASTER which would not hold pressure.
The cause of this problem was traced to an improperly maintained bleeder valve. In this case, the
set screw which retains the handle loosened and allowed the handle to move until no overlap existed
between the tang on the handle and the tang on the valve body. Without contact between the tangs
the operator could not properly position the ball valve in the closed position.
The attached drawing and maintenance procedures have been developed to inform the users of
CLINCHER CHROMEMASTERs of this potential problem and means of preventing its
occurrence. The position of the handle and its securing set screw should be routinely inspected. If
evidence of packing leakage is observed, the packing nut should be tightened using the documented
procedures. If the valve continues to leak after adjustment, it should be replaced.

Packing Adjustment
1. Insert the tube into the filter port until the tube bottoms out in the
filter body. Care should be exercised to insure the tube is properly
aligned with the filter body and port.
2. Normal make-up for port size 4 thru 16 (1/4 thru 1 inch) is 1-1/4 turn
from finger tight.
Please follow the above directions for counting the number of turns for
proper fitting make-up. Do not make-up the tube fittings by torque or
"feel". Variables such as tubing and fitting tolerances, tube wall
thickness, and lubricity of nut lubricants can result in an improperly
assembled tube fitting connection.
