CURRENT WORLD FERTILIZER

TREND AND OUTLOOK TO 2005/2006

This report presents world nitrogen, phosphate and potash fertilizer supply
and demand projections for the period 2001/2002 to 2005/2006. The
FAO Industry Working Group (FWG) made the forecasts in May 2001.
The balances, Annex 1-3, present a medium-term indication for possible
changes in fertilizer nutrient demand and supply by region and subregion.
Changes in installed supply capacity, operating rates and demand vary
annually. Nominal capacity is defined as the name plate capacity over
330 days per year and the supply capability is the estimated production
capability based on a potential operating rate.
All nutrient balances show a declining trend. Nitrogen surplus regions
in the world may export ammonia and various nitrogen containing
fertilizers. Deficit regions may cover their needs with imports of ammonia
and various nitrogen containing fertilizers. Similarly, regions can import
and export phosphoric acid and phosphate containing fertilizers. The
potash mine capacity is adjusted for potash for technical requirements
to arrive at the volume of potash available for potash fertilizer.
Analysis of accuracy in past consumption forecasts shows a deviation
of less than 5 percent for all nutrients except for nitrogen (actual
consumption appeared to be slightly higher). The accuracy of projections
at the beginning of the projection period is well within that range. The
information base of the FWG continues to expand.
Annex 4 of this report presents the list of countries under the regional
classification. This report has been prepared as an information source to
FAO member countries and for general distribution. The contributions
of participating agencies, fertilizer industry associations, institutions and
individuals are gratefully acknowledged.
Nitrogen demand, Annex 1, shows an expansion of 1.7 percent per
annum for the next five years and potential availability by 1.3 percent.

The world nitrogen balance shows an average compounded decline at

some 4 percent per year over the period that reduces the surplus balance
from
2 11 percent to 8 percent of projected world consumption. The
regional balances, however, show distinct contrasting differences. The
negative balances in North America and South Asia regions are to increase
by 16 and 14 percent per year respectively. The surplus balances in West
Asia (Middle East) and Latin America regions are forecast to increase
by 9 and 14 percent per year. The negative balance in South Asia will
become the largest in the world at almost 5 percent of global consumption.
The considerable surplus balance in East Europe and Central Asia region
is expected to continue to persist and is forecast to decline with 1 percent
per year. Availability and consumption in East Asia are to grow at some
2 percent per year, the negative balance is forecast to increase by almost
3 percent per year.
The world phosphate balance, Annex 2, shows a forecast decline in
surplus at 22 percent per year in the next five years. Demand is projected
to grow by 2 percent per year and availability by 1 percent. The surplus

is to decrease from 7 percent to 2 percent of world consumption. While

the deficit balance in the South Asia region increases by some 7 percent
per year, the deficit in the East Asia region increases by less than 1
percent per year. Africa will become at the end of the projection period
the largest surplus region in the world followed by the North America
region. Phosphate fertilizer consumption continues to decline in the West
Europe region, and the deficit of the region may become smaller than
the deficit of the Latin America region in the next five years. The West
Asia region surplus projection declines by 7 percent per year, which is
entirely due to steady increases in regional phosphate fertilizer
consumption.
World potash consumption is projected to grow by 2 percent per year
against availability by 0.5 percent. The surplus balance projection
declines at almost 6 percent per year to some 4.8 million tonnes in 2005/
06, which constitutes 19 percent of world potash consumption against
28 percent at present. Highest consumption growth is envisaged in the
East Europe and Central Asia and the Africa regions, albeit from a very

low base. The West Asia, South Asia and Latin America regions are
projected to grow at a considerable pace, while potash consumption in
the West Europe region is expected to decline. Growth in potash
4
availability for fertilizers in the West Asia region is to grow by over 20
percent, again from a rather low base. Major sources of supply remain
the North America, West Asia, and West Europe regions.
