Lesson Plan

Name: Brayden Gill

Grade/Subject: Grade 4 Science
Unit: Levers
Topic: The End of the Lever
Date: December 5, 2016
Length of Lesson: 60 min.
General Learning Demonstrate ways to use a lever that applies a small force to create a large force (SLE 6)
Outcomes (P.O.S.) Predict how changes in the size of a lever or the position of the fulcrum will affect the forces
and movements involved (SLE 7)
Specific Leaning

Objectives
Materials
Procedure
Introduction
(10 min.)

Construct models of levers; and explain how levers are involved in such devises as: teetertotters, scissors, pliers, pry bars, tongs, nutcrackers, fishing rods, wheelbarrows
In a lever, does the mechanical advantage and distance moved change when the fulcrum is at
the end?
Students will
1. Demonstrate understanding of lever system
2. Recognize importance of object distance form a fulcrum
Prezi
7 rulers
Master #21 X22
7 Newton Meters
7 weights
Heavy duty tape
Assessment Methods
Open Prezi and settle students in (grab attention)
(formative) students
Review Last Class
complete group work
and listen carefully to
-What are levers?
all instructions
A lever is an arm which tilts around the fulcrum (a pivot) to provide
useful motion.
-What is a fulcrum?
Is the point on which a lever rests or is supported and on which it
pivots.
-Other things learned from last class?
(is position of fulcrum important in lifting an object? Ex. Broomstick)
What is Mechanical Advantage?
This is the ratio of the force produced by a machine to the force
applied to it
-An effective machine would have a high mechanical advantage
because you would get more out of the force you put in
Daily Question
In a lever, does the mechanical advantage and distance moved change
when the fulcrum is at the end?

Body of Lesson
(10 min.)

Project
When I say go
-We are going to make our own lever system in our pods again
-Everything will be brought to your tables so you do not have to come
and get anything
-The first thing we are going to do is measure how many newtons it
takes to lift our load on our own
-Write down the answer in your first block on handout
Hand out Weights, Newton Meters, and Assignment
-Give class 5 minutes to find Newtons and then record on assignment
-Take turns among members in your pod

(10 min)

Next Step
When I say go...

(formative) are
students participating
in discussion

-One person in your pod is going to take a ruler and tape one end of it
down on to our desk. Tape a newton meter to the other side of the ruler
(demonstrate)
-Place the load 15cm from the fulcrum
-Record how many Newtons it takes to lift
-Take turns in pods lifting the load
Next Step
(10 min)
When I say go
-Take turns recording three different places that you placed the load
-Each person in pod gets to place load in one spot

(formative) students
recognize importance
of lever system

Findings
(20 min.)
Did you pull more or less using the lever than when you lifted the
load by itself?
What did you notice about the distance of the bottle from the
fulcrum and the amount you had to pull in order to lift it?
How can this type of lever help you move heavy objects more
easily?
Finish Master 21 Questions
(10 min.)
Answers
What did you notice about the distance of the load from the fulcrum
and the amount you had to pull to lift it

(formative) students
recognize importance
of a lever system

-It got easier as the load was moved closer to the fulcrum
How can this kind of lever help you to move heavy objects more
easily?
-Works similar to a wheelbarrow and bottle opener in changing
where the effort is placed
Closure (10 min.)

Review
Last Questions and Summary
In a lever, does the mechanical advantage and distance moved
change when the fulcrum is at the end?
Answer: AS THE LOAD MOVES CLOSER TO THE FULCRUM,
LESS EFFORT IS REQUIRED TO LIFT IT

Sponge Activity

Draw a diagram on the back of Master 21 of the pulley system

-Label the fulcrum, lever, and load
