PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

PROCEDURE
Introduction
We've been talking about addition a lot and we've been looking at patterns in
addition that can help you with your mental math skills
That is what we're going to be talking about today
If I gave you a number, can someone tell me what each place value is called?
Ones, tens, hundreds, thousands etc.
Remember this because we're going to talk about it in a second.
Body
Topic: Adding 10
1) Ask the students if they can tell me what happens when
they add 10 to any number
1. Only the tens place changes
2) So if I add 10 to 20, what do I get? 30
1. Notice how the ones place stayed the same
3) If I add 10 to 56, what do I get? 66
1. Again, only the tens place value changed.
4) What if I add 10 to a 1-digit number? Say 9+10. Can
someone tell me what that is? 19, so the ones place still
stayed the same. But the tens place value changes

Time

Topic: Quick
review of patterns

1) Very quickly before I explain the follow up work you are

responsible for, can someone tell me what happens
when we add one to a number? How much larger is the
answer than the original number?
2) If we add two?
3) If we take away one? Take away 2?
4) I know some of you find this very easy, however these
are considered patterns in addition and they are going to
be important in your follow up work

2
Topic: Explain
template

1) Hold up the template, explain that they will be

responsible to complete this worksheet and I'll explain
how the numbers work
2) Referencing the example explain how we start at the
number given, to go up the first column, we take away
10. Now that we have those numbers we can go down
the row, to do so, we add 1.
3) Explain that they can do this starting with any number.
Point to a different spot on the example, Ask what I
need to do to get to a different box.
4) Ask if they have any questions
Conclusion

Ask them to show me their work before they hand it in

Give them their worksheets and dismiss them to go work

Observation and Discussion Formative (Objective #1 & 2)

1. Can they successfully add 10 to any number
2. Can they identify addition patterns
Template Formative (Objective #1 & 2)
1. Can they fill out the template correctly
