Erich Frauwallner There are already two distinct stages of development
apparent in the dogmatics of the early Abhidharma. The initial stage, which found
expression in the Pacaskandhaka, is a first attempt at philosophical systematics. The
second, represented by the Pacaskandhaka, is an attempt at a comptehensive and
systematic doctrine of principles. From this important conclusions can be drawn. I
regard the creation of the Pacasvastuka as the most important step on the way from
Buddhist dogmatics to a philosophical system. Studies in Abhidharma Literature
and the Origins of Buddhist Philosophical Systems (Albany: The State University of
New York Press, 1996), Translated from the German by Sophie Francis Kidd under the
supervision of Ernst Steinkellner, p. 147

A Study on the Property of Acquisition in the

Conditionings Disjoined from Thought
Jouhan Chou
Assistant Professor, Religion and Culture Studies Institute
Tzu Chi University
Abstract
The properties of acquisition (prpti) and non-acquisition (aprpti) listed in the
dharma-category
named
conditionings
disjoined
from
thought
(cittaviprayuktasaskra) are rather abstruse and difficult to understand terms.
The Sarvstivada schools view that acquisition has real existence was
rejected by other schools such as the Dntika and Sautrntika.
Thus what follows aims at exploring the reasons why the Sarvstivada persisted
in upholding this view.
The article begins with a discussion of the formation of the conditionings
disjoined from thought as one of the five dharma-categories of the Sarvstivda
school. It then discusses the formation of acquisition and non-acquisition,
arriving at the conclusion that the Sarvstivda school argued for the real existence
of acquisition by appealing to its functions. The article ends with a discussion of
these particular functions that are at stake.
In the authors analysis, the argument for the real existence of the property of
acquisition put forward by the Vaibhsika scholars is based on the following
characteristics assigned to such property: 1. it functions as a cause for establishing
the distinction between the noble ones and ordinary worldlings; 2. it functions as
cause for claiming that the pudgala is endowed with properties; 3. it functions as a
device for not losing the properties that have been acquired by a dharma; 4. it
functions as a mark of knowledge.
