ln the absence of historical or epigraphicaf evidence there is little dlse
t'go upon. Archaeological evidence, based on the str*cturar desiq'
or materials of dams, sluices, flood cscapes, bunds ancl other featurcs,
is too slender to build up a chronologicai series.
Ttre historical information abo*t irrigation r,vorks in Roirana is
scanty.. There was nothing tlrere at any time on the scale of the u,lorks
in Rajara!,fha. The clam'on the Vaiave Ganga at Trinktitiya has
already been mentionecl. A canal about z5 milei rong took oit"on thc
right bank of the Kirinda ova from a dam Jt Tunmoclera, near l'elulla.
and einptied into the llaiala Ara : no'cference exists to itsconstruction.
Further dorvn, the same river r.vas damrnecl to feed. vir-avila, Tisavd.va
and Yodavdva tanks at 'rissamatrarama. lt is probabre that the large
llaqdagala tank in Yala, nor' breachccl, rvas ionstructecl before tfie
roth century , i! rvas fed by a canal about ro miles long taken ofi the
right bank of the Kumbulkan Oya from a dam at "Mairavelatota.

I built several new darns

rivers and streams and made his kingdom fruitful '. Only
stated that Vijayabahu

one new reservoir is mentioned as having been constructed, Baddhagu{'avapi,_nor,v the ruined Budugunavdva in the wild, south-eastern
corner of Uva.

The death of Vijayabahu I in rrro was follow-ed by a long

internecine struggle betr'r'een rival princes in the course of which the
country again became impoverished. The kingdom was divided into
independent principalities and rvarfare was incessant. Er,'entually,
Parakkamabahu became ruler of Dakkhiladesa abcut rr4o and ushered
in an era of power and prosperity and a mighty development in the
construction of new irrigation works lvhich lasted for about fifty years.5?

For the irrigation works of Parahkamaba,hu f. see C.H.J.W.5z et seq.
