The Value of a Rigorous Method in the Optimisation of a Concentrator: Experiences in

Australia, Chile and South Africa

Percy Condori

The optimisation of a concentrator has a different stages and each of them is critical and important,
therefore each of them should be treated accordingly. However, lack of experience, lack of suitable
equipment and resources often ends with undesired and contradictory results.
This paper, explores the methodology used by Rio Tinto, T&I and highlights common mistakes
found in different mines worldwide.
It is important to highlight however, that the method used by a traditional met-accounting procedure
is different to the method used for modelling and simulation purposes. In this context, the
methodology developed by AMIRA (Australian Mineral and Research Association) and
conveniently adapted by T&I has been proved very valuable and has assisted in the optimisation of
a number of operations in Australia, Chile and South Africa.
