Heisenberg'soriginalmatrixmechanicsThisistheworkthatcreatedthemoderntheoryofquantummechanics(Heisenberg1925).Heisenbergwantedto
tacklethequestionofhowtopredictcorrectlytheintensitiesofatomictransitionlines,asBohrhadalreadyclarifiedhowtoobtainthetransitionfrequencies.
Heisenbergbeganbynoticingthat,accordingtoBohr,thecorrectquantumtransitionfrequenciesdonotdependjustonthecurrentstateofmotion(asdothe
frequenciesofemittedradiationforaclassicalorbit),butratherontwostates(initialandfinal).Likewise,inclassicaltheory,theintensitiesofemittedradiation
wouldbegivenbythesquaresoftheFourieramplitudesoftheoscillatingdipolemomentforagivenorbit.Inaningeniousstep,Heisenbergthenpostulatedthat
insteadofasetofFourieramplitudesforagivenorbit(enumeratedbyoneindex),onewouldhavetointroduceasetofamplitudesdependingontwoindices,one
fortheinitial,theotherforthefinalstate.Heassumedthattheequationsofmotionforthoseamplitudeslookedformallythesameasinclassicaltheory
