NOTABLE FIXED-WING PROGRAMMES & REQUIREMENTS

Argentina
18 Pampa III Advanced Jet Trainers are to be built for the
Argentine Air Force.
Delivery of 10 Grob G120TP-A trainers to the Fuerza Area
Argentina (FAA Argentine Air Force) has been completed.
However, at least 5 more aircraft are urgently required,
with a further 5 required less urgently.
The US State Department has approved a possible Foreign
Military Sale of up to 24 Beechcraft
T-6C+ Texan II
turboprop trainers to Argentina, the US Defense Security
Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on the 3rd August.
The estimated $300 million sale aims to replace the
Argentine Air Forces advanced trainers, which now include
only 14 from an original 30 Embraer EMB-312 Tucanos
purchased from Brazil in 1987.
Australia
The 33 Hawk 127 lead-in fighter trainers of the Royal
Australian Air Force (RAAF) are to be subjected to a major
modernisation programme by BAE Systems. The
maintenance contract, also with BAE Systems, has also
been extended for another 5 years, with potential to be
further extended to 2026.
Meanwhile, Project 5428 is a requirement for a new fixedwing pilot training system for the RAAF. Australias
Department of Defence has selected a Lockheed Martin-led
consortium as the preferred bidder for this requirement,

India
The Intermediate Jet Trainer (IFT) programme has been
delayed. An imported alternative to indigenous HJT-36
Sitara has been requested by the IAF.
Indias defence ministry is considering the acquisition of an
additional batch of BAE Systems Hawk advanced jet
trainers.
New Delhi indicates it could purchase as many as 30
examples of the MK 132 variant, which would be licencebuilt locally by Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL).
The proposed purchase is in addition to a previously
announced need for 20 aircraft to be acquired for the air
forces Suryakin aerobatic display team. That deal has yet
to be concluded, however.
India placed orders for 66 Hawks in 2004, and a follow-on
deal for 57 aircraft 40 for the air force and 17 for the navy
was contracted in 2010.
Production of the HJT-36 has been halted to resolve issues
with the type.
It is estimated only six early production examples of the
type have been built.
India will procure Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) HTT-40
basic trainers and cap the further import of foreign-built
basic trainer aircraft (BTA), defence minister Manohar
Parrikar has announced.
Stage II training is now also being handled by BTA, and
therefore the requirement for the total number will
increase from 181 to approximately 210.

India (cont.)
HAL last year received a commitment for an initial 68
tandem-seat HTT-40s, but orders for the turboprop could
rise as high as 120 units.
The Swiss-made Pilatus PC-7 Mk II. The airframer has
already delivered 75 of the type, and an option for an
additional 38 was cleared by Indias defence acquisition
council in March 2015.
Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has completed the maiden
flight of its indigenous HTT-40 Basic Trainer Aircraft
prototype, on 31 May.
The Indian Air Force is scheduled to acquire 68 HTT-40s as
partial replacements for its outdated HPT-32 Deepak
basic trainers.
Indonesia
There are plans to acquire 4 more Bonanzas, to bring the
fleet to the required complement of 12.
6 twin-engined aircraft are also to be purchased for multiengine training, although a specific type has not been
selected.
Iraq
Aero Vodochody has revived its L-159 production line to
complete a twin-seat example for the Iraqi air force. The
company is building the aircraft as a one-off to fulfil a 2015
contract with Baghdad for 14 of the type, most of which
will be surplus Czech air force examples stored at the
manufacturers Odolena Voda site.

the T-346A. This is part of a wider deal signed in 2009 for
the eventual supply of 15 M-346s to the AMI.
Jordan
The Jordanian air force has ordered 9 Pilatus PC-9Ms and
reportedly, 10 G-120TPs and 8 PC-21s.
Mexico
Mexico could look to double the size of its current G120TP
order to 50 aircraft.
Netherlands
A new lead-in fighter trainer is required by 2019-20, for
training F-35 pilots, T-X will be too late to satisfy this
requirement.
Pilatus Aircraft has received the first of ten Royal
Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) PC-7 Turbo Trainers for
upgrade.

The modernisation will give the fleet 60,000 flight hours in

total and is expected to extend service life until at least
2027. The RNLAF has 13 PC-7s, the first of which were
delivered in 1989. Upgrade of the remaining three aircraft

Sweden
PC-21 may replace SK 60.
Swedens air force commander hopes to advance a
competition to replace the services roughly 50 Saab 105
(Sk 60) jet trainers from late this decade.
Sweden has decided to retain a basic pilot training
capability in-country.
No decision is expected this year, but the service retains an
option to try to field a new capability by 2020.
Taiwan
Taiwan is planning to purchase some 70 new advanced jet
trainers between 2017 and 2021 in order to replace its
ageing fleets of Northrop F-5E/Fs and AT-3s.
The MND has said it hopes to finalise a tender in either late
2016 or early 2017.
2 new jet trainers were unveiled at the 2015
Taipei Aerospace & Defense Technology Exhibition (TADTE),
in August, in Taiwan.
Taiwans Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation
(AIDC) is proposing 2 fighter trainer options for
replacement of the AT-3 Tzu Chung and F-5E/F Tigers.
The first is the subsonic AT-3 MAX Advanced Trainer, based
on the original AT-3 design, but with updated avionics and a
glass cockpit.
The second, based on AIDCs Indigenous Defence Fighter

Taiwan (cont.)
The exact air force requirements are still being developed,
but it will either be a lead-in trainer, an advanced trainer or
a combination of both.
However, the Air Force may select the M-346 instead of a
local buy, with AIDC wanting a 50 percent local assembly
option. Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) T-50 Golden Eagle
supersonic trainer is also an option.
Taiwan has a potential requirement for between 25 and 30
Grob G120TPs.
Turkey
The T-X Project is for a replacement for the T-38s in the
early 2020s.
Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) is progressing with its
Hrkus, Turkeys first locally designed basic training aircraft.
The Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) are considering an initial
order for 15 of the Hrkus B variant.

UK (cont.)
The first two examples for the UKs Military Flying Training
System are in production, and due for delivery to the
Affinity consortium in September/October. To be named
the Prefect in UK service, the type is due to begin delivering
training services late next year.
In addition, 10 Beechcraft T-6C Texan IIs will replace 40
Shorts Tucano T1s for basic flying training. IOC for the T-6C
is planned in January 2019, with full availability to be
declared in December 2019. Basic flying training will move
to RAF Valley, Anglesey, from RAF Linton-on-Ouse.
Multi-engine training will be delivered from June 2018 by 5
Phenom 100 business jets at RAF Cranwell. Contract
signature with Affinity was planned to occur late during the
third quarter of 2015.
The Royal Air Force has finally ended flying training on the
Hawk T1.

USA
The US Air Force has proposed millions of dollars in
incentives for contractors who propose T-X trainer
candidates that exceed its outlined performance
requirements, a draft request for proposals (RFP) released
on 26 July reveals.
Contractors who offer a trainer with higher sustained g and
manoeuvrability, as well as a faster turn-around time
between sorties, would receive reductions to their total
evaluated price.
The USAF plans to buy more than 300 trainers to replace its
Northrop T-38s and prepare its pilots for single-seat, fifthgeneration fighters like the Lockheed Martin F-35.
Boeing and Saab have teamed up with a clean-sheet design,
while Raytheon is offering a T-100 variant of the Leonardo
Aermacchi M-346. Lockheed is pushing its ready-to-go T50A.

USA (cont.)
Boeing and Saab revealed their new trainer proposal for the
US Air Forces forthcoming T-X contest in St. Louis, Missouri
on the 13th September, showing off a twin-tailed, anhedralwing aircraft that leverages the F/A-18 Hornets GE Aviation
F404 engine with an afterburner.
US Air Force officials have released details of the
requirements for the T-X trainer aircraft family of systems
that will replace the T-38 Talon in USAF service.
The USAF plans to award a contract for 350 T-Xs to replace
the 431 AETC T-38s in autumn 2017, with initial operational
capability (IOC) expected by the end of 2023.
Contenders for the programme are likely to include Alenia
Aermacchi (T-100 variant of M-346), Lockheed Martin (T50) and Boeing (new concept), with a possible separate bid
by Northrop.
The US Air Force (USAF) has delayed the planned opening
of its T-X fighter trainer competition by three months in
order to further refine the request for proposals (RfP).
The programme office now anticipates an RfP release in
late December 2016 to ensure the release of a well-defined
RfP.
As a result, full operational capability has been delayed by
two years until 2034 in order to align the production
schedule with the air force strategic planning. Initial
operational capability remains unchanged at 2024.
The US Air Force has started searching for options to
upgrade or replace its fleet of 178 Hawker Beechcraft T-1A
Jayhawks, which are used mainly as advanced training
aircraft for airlift and tanker pilots. Market Surveys are
under way and one option may be the acquisition of Very
Light Jets.

fixed-wing flight training contest lasts year, unseating 30year incumbent FlightSafety International.
Six of the aerobatic low-wing aircraft will assume training
roles currently performed by FlightSafetys Cessna 182s and
Zlin 242Ls.
Zambia
A major re-equipment programme for the Zambian Air
Force (ZAF) is currently under way and will include
additional SF260TWs.
