Principle

Percolation or hydraulic conductivity is defined as the rate of movement of water


through soil.
Procedure
Take a dry metal cylinder and fill up it with soil sample soak the sample by passing
water through until saturated.
Set up the soil cylinder in the position as shown in the figure and cover the surface with
filter paper.
Invert a large volumetric flask above the cylinder
Allow settling then measure the volume passing in time (t) sec.
Calculation
Percolation (m/s) = V x D / A x t x H

= Water volume passing in time t (cm3)


= Cross sectional area of soil cylinder (cm2)
= Depth of soil core (cm)
= Head of water (cm)
