Committee approves ordinance

permitting residential chickens

Chickens can now be the
newest residents to Tabernacle.
The Tabernacle Township
Committee approved the ordinance on residential standards
for keeping chickens with a fourto-one vote last week.
When you have residents that
desire something in your town,
and it doesnt have an overall public burden, I think it is my responsibility to find a way to make
things work and have restrictions
on it as well, so the overall population is not bothered by it,
Mayor Stephen Lee IV said. Residents who had chickens, they
wanted to have chickens, and we
found a way to make it work.
The ordinance has been a long
debated topic in Tabernacle. The
ordinance was originally introduced in early September. In the
August meeting where a chicken
ordinance was discussed, members of the community voiced
their support of the ordinance

being passed.
At the meeting in September, a
number of residents spoke
against the ordinance, as they
worried about attracting animal
predators, coop setback issues
and manure management. The
ordinance was approved on first
reading, despite the concerned
comments, however it would go
before the Land Development
Board to be sure there were no
setback issues with the coops. A
back and forth on the topic of residential chickens continued in
the meetings to follow.
In November, the township
worked to get Rutgers University
School of Environmental and Biological Sciences Presentation on
Domestic Chickens to inform the
public about keeping residential
chickens. According to Lee, those
who came to the informational
session were all in support of the
ordinance.

Collectively, it was a comprehensive review and construction
of an ordinance in a very public
way, Lee said.
The original ordinance, along
with the amendments, was put
up to second reading at the Dec.
13 meeting. Residents who attended the meeting did not attend
the chicken information session,
according to Lee, and voiced disapproval on the procedural manner of the ordinance. The ordinance was still put to a vote, with
Committeewoman Kim Brown as
the lone no vote.

Amendments include the allowance of one rooster or cockerel on lots of at least three acres;
the number of female chickens is
allowed based on the size of the
animal unit, not including the
residence/lawn area; no limit on
the sale of agricultural products
was
included;
and
no
permit is required to keep chickens.
Shelters are still required to be
located at least 30 feet from any
residential structure on an adjoining property, cannot exceed
60 square feet in size or eight feet
in height, and fences cannot exceed six feet in height. There are
also a number of requirements
for manure storage, use and removal.

The agreement between the
Tabernacle Athletic Association
and the township was approved 50. The agreement permits the
TAA to use the Patty Bowker
Sports
Complex
Concession/Snack Stand together with the garage, bathrooms,
storage area and kitchen.
The agreement outlines allowances for the TAA to use the
facilities, such as responsibilities, maintenance and insurance
liabilities.
Lee said the TAA volunteers
put a lot of work into the construction of the building and
some financial support, though
the county did give the township
grants to make the Patty Bowker
Sports
Complex
Concession/Snack Stand.

Every year, our communities are in
need of help.
Over the past few weeks, we have
had the pleasure of publishing stories
about efforts to lend a hand. Like always, there were the usual Toys for Tot
drives and more. We dont keep a for-

mal count of the number of holiday

fundraising event stories we publish
from year to year, but it certainly
seemed that, in 2016, there were many.
So, we thank those individuals and
groups who organized these efforts.
And, on behalf of them, we also thank
everyone who picked up an extra can
of non-perishable food, an additional
bag of dog food, one more toy and
more. To all of those who reached a little deeper into their wallets this year to
help out, your generosity truly made a
difference.
We wish everyone a happy holiday
season and hope for a wonderful 2017.

Local Shamong, Tabernacle community

members share holiday memories, traditions

The holidays are a time where families
come together, and in Tabernacle and Shamong, though residents may be spread out,
they still find ways to come together either
as a community or as families.
The Sun reached out to prominent members of the community to ask them how
they celebrate the holiday season.
Tabernacle Mayor Stephen Lee IV said
the holidays are a time for relaxation for
his family. As the Lee family has to work
hard on its cranberry farm from early
March to November, December is the first
time for a sort of vacation. Though the
family technically works year round, its
around the holidays they get to put their
feet up.
It is the first time we really get to take
some time off and relax, and reflect on the
past year, Lee said.
However, the Lee family stays home dur-

ing the holidays. They put up two trees, a

real and fake one, and decorate them with
real cranberries and popcorn. For Christmas, the Lee family goes to mass at Church
of the Holy Eucharist in Tabernacle and
shares a few presents around the tree.
Lee said he is proud of Tabernacles celebratory holiday traditions. The Tabernacle Tree Lighting was early last month featuring music, entertainment, refreshments, Santa and, of course, the lighting of
the township tree. The Tabernacle Rescue
Squad had its Operation Santa last week,
where it rode around town with Santa waving hello to residents, and the Tabernacle Fire Company No. 1 has its Breakfast
with Santa.
The Pinelands Branch Library is also
getting into the holiday spirit with a number of festive events. A snowman make-ntake craft is all day on Wednesday, Dec. 21
at the library for children of all ages, and
holiday wrapping is available for any age
on Dec. 22 and 24, with a limit of two per

person. The Medford Library Association

also helped to decorate the library, even
creating a tree made entirely out of books.
The staff has also worked hard to make
holiday-themed fun story times.
(Preparing for the holidays) is fun. My
staff has always felt a part of the community and everyone enjoys doing it. The
friends of the library help with the decorations. This year, they were very creative. I
hope you come to see the tree, Pinelands
Library Branch Manager Wei-Jie Cui said.
Cui said she hadnt celebrated Christmas before coming to America. Originally
from China, she said she was not prepared
for the cards and the trees, and would always wait until the last minute to set
things up. However, as her children grew
older, she learned more about the holiday
and has now made it a tradition.

seniors and individuals with disabilities free home security surveys and modifications.

Holiday traditions are special

holidays with a large family
party. As her husband comes
from Italian roots, she does the
Feast of the Seven Fishes, and
more than 50 people come over to
spend time together and eat.
Vespe has a tradition of going to
see The Nutcracker with her
best friend, and as her best
friends daughter is now in the
ballet, it makes it even more special. Growing up, Vespes mother
would collect ornaments, and
eventually some of those ornaments were passed on to her. She
has started her own tradition
with her husband and two sons of
putting up a tree and decorating
it with the ornaments from her
mother.
My favorite memory as a child
was going to bed, and when I
woke up on Christmas, the tree
would be up and decorated and

Santa would come. Its one of the

brightest memories for me as a
child growing up, Vespe said.
Family is big for Tabernacle
School Districts Superintendent
Glenn Robbins as well, as for the
past two years he has gone to
Florida to visit his and his wifes
parents.
Santa comes down to Florida
for my 4-year-old, Robbins said.
We always enjoy being around
family, first and foremost, and celebrating the good times we have
and appreciating life.
Robbins said his favorite part
of the holidays is watching the
kids open presents and play with
their toys. He, too, enjoys playing
with them.
Seeing Christmas from the
eyes of my 4-year-old son and
playing with toys and games, it
reminds me of memories that I
had (at that age) and being
around relatives, not worrying
about anything else, but truly enjoying the moment, Robbins
said.
