1. State any four merits and demerits of Steel Structures over RCC
Structures?
2. Write any four advantages of welded joints over riveted joints?
3. A tie member consists of ISA 65 x 65 x 8 mm connected by fillet weld
to one leg only calculate the net effective area of section?

PART-B

Instructions:

Answer any two questions and each question carries (07) marks

4. A 150 x 115 x 10mm angle carries axial tension of 500kN and is to be

connected to the 12mm thick gusset plate along the two sides of the
longer leg. Design the joint using fillet weld if the permissible stress in
the weld is 110N/mm2?
5. Two angles ISA 65 X 45 X 6mm are placed back to back and are
connected to each side of gusset plate on the longer side. The angles
are connected by 6mm size fillet weld along the length. Find the
permissible tensile load on the member?
6. Determine the compressive strength of single ISHB 300@630N/m when
it is used as a column of length 4m whose ends are effectively hold in

position but not restrained against rotation. Take yield stress of steel as
300Mpa.
