Teacher Candidates Name: Kristin Antonucci & Sabrina Ribeiro

Topic: Upper & Lowercase Letters
Grade Level: Kindergarten
Common Core Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.1.A
Objectives
Students will be able to print the four letters of the alphabet in upper & lowercase
letters. (Aa, Bb, Cc, Dd)
Students will be able to classify upper & lowercase letters.
Materials:

case / 18 copies.

http://exchange.smarttech.com/details.html?id=cc2715e0-3a61-4be9-8f61c955066da1d4 (SmartBoard Game)
Procedures:
Anticipatory Set-- Introduction: The class will gather together at the morning rug
and sing the alphabet together. Then the teacher will introduce capital letters and
lowercase letters. Before telling the students what they exactly are the teacher
will ask What do I mean by upper and lowercase letters? The teacher will also
ask Can anyone show me an example? After the students get to answer and
show their own examples the teacher will explain what each letters are. An upper
case letter is also known as a big letter (show example) and a lowercase letter is
known as a small letter (show example.)

Teacher will now ask the children to go back to their seats to watch a video on
the alphabets. (Video link- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vcq0Mjswdhc )
During the video teacher will pause on the first four letters that appear in the
video. Those letters being (ABCD, abcd) the teacher will explain to the students
that those are the four letters they will be learning in class today. The teacher will
still allow the rest of the alphabets to play on the video however the teacher
should focus on those four letters.
Once the video is over, the teacher will ask the children to talk about what they
heard in the video. (p.46 Table 4.1-Communicate) Students should mention that
they saw the alphabet and the upper and lowercase letters.

The teacher will tell the children that an uppercase letter is used when starting
the first and last letter of your name. (for an example)
The teacher will ask their students which letter is tall and which letter is short.
(Tall= uppercase letters and Short= lowercase letters)
The teacher will write an uppercase letter A on the board and a lowercase letter
a. The teacher will then ask the students which letter they think is the lower case
and which they think is upper. (This is a good exercise to see if the students
understood the video.)
Once the students complete that short exercise, the teacher will bring out the A-D
flash cards. Explain to the students that each letter is the same however, one is
tall and one is short. Explain that some may look the same for example
uppercase C and lowercase c but others look different for example uppercase B
and lowercase b. (http://www.readingrockets.org/content/pdfs/mamaandme.pdf)
Once the teacher shows the flashcards for Aa, Bb, Cc, Dd in the alphabet the
teacher will pass out the Uppercase letter and Lowercase letter Tracing
Worksheet. (Example worksheet will be attached to the lesson plan.)
The teacher will explain to the children that she will be writing the letters on the
board and the children will follow along after. (They will go one letter at a time.)
Once this is completed teacher will go over the letters by assigning each student
a partner (picked by the teacher) each student will go to the board and write their
lower and uppercase letter. (In the pair one person is upper and one person is
lower.) ***(page 40- 45) The students will use the SmartBoard/ more engaged.
communicative.
If its correct the teacher should congratulate the pair and if it is incorrect the
class can help out the pair in need of assistance.
http://exchange.smarttech.com/details.html?id=cc2715e0-3a61-4be9-8f61c955066da1d4 (SmartBoard Game)
Once all the lower and uppercase letters are completed have students discuss
their favorite part in today's lesson. (You can even ask what their
favorite letter of the day was.)
Closure-- Review: Each student will receive an Exit Ticket.
Each exit ticket will have 2 parts to it. The top part of the ticket
will have a fill in the blank for uppercase letters and the bottom
part of the ticket will have a fill in the blank for lowercase letters.
The exit ticket will consist only of the first four letters of the alphabet. (Aa, Bb,
Cc, Dd)

Assessment:
a) Formative: Worksheets, activities, and questions throughout the lesson
(questions are said in the procedure) are being asked throughout the lesson.
Teacher observation.
b) Summative: The teacher will have the students do the Exit Ticket to see if they
understood the lesson. The students should have at least three letters correct for
it to be acceptable. If the students did not meet the criteria the teacher will make
sure to review the letters learned in this lesson again tomorrow in class.

Accommodations/ Modifications:
1. The students with attention deficit disorder will be seated close to a teacher and
positive peer role model.
2. The student with a listening disability can sit closer to the teacher. The teacher
can keep the child more involved by asking questions to try and engage the child.
3. A child that does not see very well can sit closer to the front of the room.
